Becerra and Hilton Advance in California

June 8, 2026 at 11:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “The race for California governor is on track for a two-person runoff in November between veteran Democratic politician Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton, a British-born television personality endorsed by President Donald Trump.”

“Becerra, who served as US health secretary in the Biden administration, took first place in the primary with more than 27% of the vote, while Hilton was in second at 25%, according to a tally by Decision Desk HQ, which projected the pair would be the top two finishers.”

GOP Wants Trump and Netanyahu to Smooth Things Over

June 8, 2026 at 11:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans are in a place where they prefer to see Democrats: caught in a bind on US-Israel relations,” Semafor reports.

“Many GOP lawmakers don’t like the tense dynamic between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the Iran war, particularly the rift between them that reopened over the weekend. Trump publicly told Netanyahu not to retaliate against Iran only to watch Netanyahu briefly forge ahead anyway.”

Washington Post: Trump’s grip on the GOP leaves Netanyahu with few places to turn.

New York Post: Trump scolds Netanyahu in testy phone call.

Trump Nominates Todd Blanche as Attorney General

June 8, 2026 at 4:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “President Donald Trump nominated Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche to fill the position on a permanent basis, rewarding a loyal ally whose controversial actions ensure an uphill Senate confirmation fight.”

“The White House announced Monday it had sent Blanche’s nomination to the Senate, a move Trump telegraphed last week during remarks at a private event in the Rose Garden. Blanche formerly served as one of Trump’s personal lawyers before the president picked him for the No. 2 position at the Justice Department.”

Trump Calls on Thune to Remove Senate Parliamentarian

June 8, 2026 at 4:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “Donald Trump called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune to fire the Senate’s top rules keeper after one of her decisions thwarted the president’s efforts to attach voter identification legislation to a budget package.”

GOP Candidate Thinks Women Should Prove Rape

June 8, 2026 at 4:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Georgia gubernatorial candidate Rick Jackson (R) believes women should have to prove they were raped before being eligible for an abortion exception under the state’s six-week ban, according to leaked audio obtained by HuffPost.

Trump’s Name Removed from Kennedy Center Branding

June 8, 2026 at 4:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “The Kennedy Center website logo no longer includes ‘Trump’ after a federal judge ruled President Donald Trump’s name had to be removed from the institution’s branding.”

“For now, the large lettering on the building’s facade still features “Donald J. Trump.” But the Kennedy Center’s general counsel said in a memo to staff that they have until June 12 to remove it to comply with the court order.”

Trump Struggled to Rein In Netanyahu’s Strikes on Iran

June 8, 2026 at 3:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu weighed how to respond to waves of Iranian missile attacks Sunday night, President Trump called with a message: Stand down.”

“But as it became clear the Israeli leader wouldn’t ignore a direct attack, Trump shifted his tone. Keep it limited, and don’t let it escalate, he said according to people familiar with the conversation.”

“Trump had hoped to contain the flare-up in fighting to keep it from disrupting work on a peace deal he is trying to hammer out with Tehran. His struggle to squelch Israel’s retaliatory strikes shows the difficulty of managing a situation in which the U.S. and Israel’s priorities are diverging sharply, particularly over Lebanon, as he tries to wind down the war.”

Trump Will Ask Supreme Court to Revive CNN Suit

June 8, 2026 at 3:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “President Donald Trump told the U.S. Supreme Court he intends to ask the justices to revive his $475 million defamation lawsuit against CNN over use of the term ‘Big Lie’ in reporting on his claim that the 2020 election was rigged against him.”

Five Primary Races That Are Getting Ugly

June 8, 2026 at 3:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Many Democratic and Republican primary races have devolved into bruising political knife fights.”

“New district lines in states like California have pitted once friendly House incumbents against each other, while other candidates attempting to make political comebacks are willing to use their sharp elbows against their successors to get ahead. Some races in both parties have centered on who is the most or least MAGA, showing the central role of President Trump in the elections.”

“While political races have always had a certain degree of ugliness, some campaigns this year have also embraced artificial intelligence to create fake images of their opponents and give a new look to negative ads.”

Trump Moves to Revoke Naturalized Citizenship From 17

June 8, 2026 at 3:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Justice Department moved to strip 17 individuals of their citizenship for “serious offenses,” filing denaturalization actions in U.S. district courts around the country,” NOTUS reports.

“Trump administration officials say the immigrants failed to disclose unlawful behavior during their naturalization proceedings.”

Judge Strikes Down Trump’s $100K H-1B Visa Fee

June 8, 2026 at 2:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge on Monday invalidated the Trump administration’s new fees for H-1B visas, saying officials overreached in applying a $100,000 charge for new applicants to the program for foreign professionals,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Ukraine Is Not Losing

June 8, 2026 at 2:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Anne Applebaum: “Ukrainian military technology has been evolving rapidly since the first years of the war. But only now are outsiders—in Europe, the United States, the Persian Gulf, and of course Russia—beginning to understand what that evolution means.”

“Since 2022, many public arguments about the war, even in Europe and the U.S., have adopted the narrative put out by Russian propaganda, tacitly assuming that Ukraine, outmanned and outgunned, would eventually lose. Helping Ukraine was a way to stave off disaster, nothing more. When the Trump administration stopped sending military and financial aid to Kyiv in 2025, some in Washington expected (and maybe wanted) the end to come quickly.”

“Instead, Europeans have provided money. Ukrainian society produced networked situational awareness. And when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky toured the Gulf states in late March and signed a series of security agreements, something changed in the international narrative.”

How America Gave Up on Its Own History

June 8, 2026 at 1:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Yoni Appelbaum: “Unable to agree on how to interpret the American story, the country’s schools, universities, and political institutions have stopped trying to tell it at all.”

Flu Vaccines Should Not Be This Hard

June 8, 2026 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Katherine Wu: “In a typical year, the process of bringing a new seasonal flu shot to market is one of the United States’ most predictable vaccine routines. This, however, is not a typical year.”

“Vaccine manufacturers have prepared updated versions of the annual flu shot, as they normally do. The FDA has green-lighted those recipes, as it normally does. And normally, the next step would fall to the CDC’s expert vaccine advisory panel, known as ACIP, which guides the agency’s recommendations for which Americans should take those shots…”

“But in March, a ruling from a federal judge effectively suspended ACIP, on the grounds that Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had violated the lawful procedure for selecting new members when he hastily remade the panel’s roster last June. Currently, no functional ACIP exists to guide this autumn’s immunization campaigns.”

Britain and America Can’t Stop Firing Their Leaders

June 8, 2026 at 11:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Martin: “Donald Trump and Keir Starmer will never be linked in the same fashion as political tandems Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher or Bill Clinton and Tony Blair. But the two beleaguered leaders may be remembered for leaving the same legacy — demonstrating that their countries are both in desperate need of a cleansing.”

“Starmer is facing a revolt in his own party — he may be ousted by a man who’s not even in Parliament yet — and were Trump to submit to a secret confidence vote from his party’s senators, he’d likely confront a similar fate.”

Quote of the Day

June 8, 2026 at 11:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It’s not my call of course but would suggest a Sunday midnight Hawaii time informal deadline for all Biden discourse.”

— Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI), on X.

Lawmakers Abandon Trump on Warrantless Wiretapping

June 8, 2026 at 11:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “President Trump is encountering headwinds on a top national-security priority for his administration with several Republicans joining Democrats in refusing to greenlight a federal spy program ahead of a deadline this week.”

“The pushback from some members of Trump’s own party, who have long said they have constitutional concerns about the program, comes amid broader intraparty friction. Last week, several conservatives voted against advancing legislation to reauthorize the spy program alongside Democrats, who are protesting Trump’s pick of Bill Pulte to temporarily lead the intelligence community.”

Trump’s Economy Polling Slides as Iran War Continues

June 8, 2026 at 11:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “President Donald Trump is barreling toward the midterm elections with a vulnerability that’s something new in his political life: Voters are losing faith in the Trump economy.”

“As the standoff in the Strait of Hormuz drags on and US gasoline prices remain high, Trump’s approval ratings have slumped near the lowest in either of his presidential terms. In particular, Americans have soured on his handling of the economy, a category that’s usually top of mind for voters and had long been Trump’s silver bullet in a career marked by tumult and scandal.”
