The Inbox for Britain’s New Leader

June 24, 2026 at 1:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Andy Burnham, if he succeeds in becoming Britain’s next prime minister, will face the same problems that beset outgoing leader Keir Starmer: a stagnant economy, little wiggle room to borrow and spend, and a lot of angry voters who feel the country is in decline,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Burnham’s biggest challenge is to get Britain’s economy growing faster. In the past 20 years, the average British household’s real income has barely budged, and is about 25% smaller than it would have been had growth rates matched what they were from the 1980s to 2007.”

June 24, 2026 at 1:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The new acting director of national intelligence has begun cutting staff days into his new role, but the initial round will be smaller than some officials and members of Congress expected,” the New York Times reports.

“Bill Pulte, who was installed in the position on Friday, has fired six intelligence officials, including career officers and political appointees. Another 45 officers from other spy agencies who had been lent to the office were sent back to their home agencies.”

Hegseth Cuts Army Commander’s Storied Career Short

June 24, 2026 at 1:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Rising to four stars in 2024, Gen. Chris Donahue was made the top U.S. Army commander in Europe, where he helped overhaul NATO’s effort to defend against Russian aggression and support Ukraine. To many, he seemed to be on a fast track to become vice chief of staff of the Army and perhaps one day lead the service itself.”

“Instead, Donahue will relinquish his U.S. command at a ceremony in Germany on July 2, people familiar with the matter say, his European assignment cut short by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s push to put his imprint on the military’s leadership.”

Trump Sets Fire to Everything

June 24, 2026 at 12:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “It was supposed to be a celebratory day for Republicans. Instead, it turned into an absolute mess.”

“President Donald Trump abruptly canceled a signing ceremony for the bipartisan housing deregulation bill this morning, saying Congress first needs to pass the SAVE America Act, his voter-ID-and-citizenship-verification bill.”

“The self-immolation is remarkable, even for Trump. It’s hard to imagine a more straightforward political win for Republicans right now than signing a bill to lower housing costs for Americans.”

Judge Blocks Trump’s Proof of Citizenship to Vote

June 24, 2026 at 12:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge on Wednesday permanently barred President Donald Trump’s administration from implementing most of his first executive order on elections, part of which sought to require people to show documentary proof of citizenship when they register to vote,” the Associated Press reports.

Obama Rips Trump’s ‘Obsession’ with Him

June 24, 2026 at 12:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Barack Obama said he finds President Donald Trump’s “obsession” with him to be a “strange” thing, Mediaite reports.

Said Obama: “I obviously have a room in his head. A suite in his head.”

He added: “First of all, when I was president, the last thing I had time to do was worry about what somebody said or my predecessor did. They’re gone. I’ve got work to do… It shows me somebody who is not focused on the American people and the job they’re supposed to do.”

Democratic Voters Show Shift Away from Israel

June 24, 2026 at 12:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Three Democrats who made criticism of Israel central to their political identities swept to victory in House primary races in New York City on Tuesday, signaling a new era of skepticism in their party toward the Jewish state and its actions,” the New York Times reports.

“The striking results reflected a fast-moving shift in liberal politics. Democratic voters are now more likely to be critical of Israel and its government than they are to be supportive, according to several recent polls, a monumental change in American sentiment.”

Trump’s IRS Pick Has Ties to His Personal Legal Team

June 24, 2026 at 12:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump has nominated a lawyer from a firm that worked on his taxes to become the top attorney at the Internal Revenue Service, an arrangement that could add to the scrutiny that the nomination was already likely to face after the administration granted the president protection from tax audits last month,” the New York Times reports.

Wall Street Journal: President Trump has chosen James Gadwood to be the top lawyer at the Internal Revenue Service.

“The decision comes amid pressure from GOP hard-liners to prioritize passage of the SAVE America Act, a Republican elections bill that has stalled in the Senate.”

How Crazy Is Darializa Avila Chevalier?

June 24, 2026 at 12:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jeff Mauer: “Well… how much time do you have? My challenge in this article is not to establish that Chevalier is crazy; my challenge is to find words to describe just how bonkers this Cirque du Soleil-level shit show truly is.”

Only 18% Believe U.S. Met Objectives in Iran

June 24, 2026 at 12:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Strength In Numbers/Verasight poll finds just 18% of Americans say the U.S. actually achieved its goals in Iran, while nearly half — 46% — say the country should never have gone to war in the first place.

Overall, 61% of adults say they are not confident the deal will stop Iran from building a nuclear weapon, as the Trump administration claims.

The President Finds His Happy Place

June 24, 2026 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Andrew Egger: “Trump hasn’t been doing so much winning lately. Islamist regimes abroad and single-celled organisms at home keep disobeying his extremely clear instructions, no matter how many bombs or gallon jugs of hydrogen peroxide he sends their way. Rogue judges keep ordering his name off of buildings, no matter how much he deserves to put it up and how nice it looks once it’s up there.”

“Even his most reliable whipping boys, the Republicans of the United States Congress, have begun to flash a sudden and alarming new modicum of self-respect, with a small but significant number of them voting against his wars and scuttling his slush funds.”

“Yeah, D.C. sort of sucks lately; what Trump needed was a rally. So yesterday he schlepped out to a Mack Trucks factory in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley to get one. These rallies have always been a tonic for Trump; this one felt more like a lifeline. Every stupid threadbare brag line, every completely invented cockamamie anecdote and scripted attack on the ‘Dumocrats’—the crowd, as usual, ate it up with a spoon.”

Republicans Seize on Socialist Victories

June 24, 2026 at 11:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Hours after Democratic socialist candidates swept to victory in New York primary races, Republicans celebrated those victories as a boon for their own party as it struggles against headwinds from the Iran war and cost-of-living issues ahead of the November midterms,” Politico reports.

Trump Roasts George Conway for Primary Defeat

June 24, 2026 at 11:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump reveled in George Conway’s election loss on Tuesday,” Mediaite reports.

Said Trump: “Wow, Mr. Kellyanne Conway, a Trump Deranged Loser at the highest level, is getting absolutely CRUSHED in the Primaries tonight. He’ll end up at about 5% of the vote in a rather weak field of young and aggressive Communists. No wonder his ‘husband’ dumped him like a dog! This is a truly unattractive person, both inside and out. Have a nice life, George!”

Flu Outbreak Worsens at Air Force Training Hub

June 24, 2026 at 11:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A flu outbreak at the Air Force’s basic training hub in San Antonio is worsening, according to two sources familiar with the situation,” ABC News reports.

“The outbreak is unfolding just two months after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made the annual flu shot optional for troops, scrapping the military’s requirement for it, which dates to 1945, a move breaking with longstanding public health directives.”

Trump Refuses to Sign Housing Bill

June 24, 2026 at 11:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump abruptly canceled his plans to sign a bipartisan bill aimed at improving housing affordability, one that Democrats and Republicans alike had been eager to promote on the campaign trail as evidence they were working to try to bring down costs,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Trump said in a social media post that he would not sign the bill until Congress passed a law that would impose new restrictions on voter identification and mail-in voting, known as the Save America Act. But Senator John Thune, Republican of South Dakota, has said that Republicans did not have the votes required.”

“Though the president said he would not sign the housing bill, it can still become law without his signature. If Congress is in session, legislation can generally become law 10 days after a bill is enrolled and presented to the president.”

ABC News: Trump cancels signing of bipartisan housing bill until his SAVE America Act is passed.

June 24, 2026 at 11:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Artificial intelligence billionaires including venture capitalist Marc Andreessen and OpenAI President Greg Brockman scored a key victory in a New York City congressional primary that became a $29 million proxy battle over who will control the future of AI,” Bloomberg reports.

“A super political action committee backed by Brockman, Andreessen and others spent more than $8 million opposing Alex Bores, a state assemblyman who attracted the industry’s ire last year when he sponsored legislation that sought to hold AI companies accountable for harms caused by their products.”

“Ultimately, another New York assemblyman, Micah Lasher, won the crowded Democratic contest on Tuesday.”

June 24, 2026 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Speaker Mike Johnson is optimistic about a third reconciliation bill succeeding, telling Punchbowl News: “I’m very bullish about it… We got some things that we really need to do, must do, everybody wants to do. So we put together the magic combination, I think we get it done.”
