Trump Tests Senate Race In Reliably Republican Georgia

August 22, 2016 at 2:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) “insists he won’t be a ‘volunteer apologist’ for Donald Trump or anyone else who utters something stupid, but that defiant independence is being sorely tested by the GOP presidential nominee’s sinking support and Democrat Hillary Clinton’s push into surprisingly competitive Georgia,” the AP reports.

“Recent polls show Trump and Hillary Clinton locked in a tight race as the Democrat opens a campaign office in the state and invests in a field organization. Isakson holds a single-digit lead over first-time candidate Jim Barksdale, a wealthy investment manager whose opposition to trade deals and calls for a higher minimum wage has attracted backers of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, the unsuccessful Democratic presidential candidate.”

Trump Catches Clinton in New Tracking Poll

August 21, 2016 at 10:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump has gained ground against Hillary Clinton, according to the latest findings from the USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times national tracking poll of the presidential race.”

“The uptick for Trump follows a broad-based decline in early August and suggests a possible narrowing of the race… As of Sunday, the tracking poll showed Trump at 45% and Clinton at 43%, within the survey’s margin of error. Those results are far closer than most other polls, which use different methodology and almost uniformly show Clinton ahead by several points.”

Nate Silver: National polls show the race tightening, but state polls don’t.

Quote of the Day

August 21, 2016 at 9:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It’s very hard to find someone to mimic the reckless temperament and the hateful instincts and divisive instincts of Donald Trump.”

— Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook, quoted by Politico, on not yet finding someone to play Trump for debate preparation.

Trump Steps Up Rhetoric on Rigged Elections

August 21, 2016 at 9:48 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Since 2010, Republican governors and Republican-held state legislatures have fought for stricter voter identification laws, which Democrats argue are intended to hinder turnout by the poorest voters, many of them black and Hispanic, who tend to vote Democratic.”

“But Mr. Trump’s language has moved beyond his party’s call for rigid identification requirements and the unfounded claims that polls are “skewed” to predictions of outright theft of the November election. And his warnings have been cast in increasingly urgent and racially suggestive language, hinting that the only legitimate outcome in certain states would be his victory.”

Trump Is Out of Time to Build a Modern Campaign

August 21, 2016 at 9:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump “is leaning heavily on Republican Party organizations to provide crucial campaign functions like getting out the vote, digital outreach and fund-raising, at a time when some leading Republicans have called for party officials to cut off Mr. Trump and focus instead on maintaining control of Congress,” the New York Times reports.

“Despite an influx of campaign cash from small donors in July, Mr. Trump’s operation still largely resembles the bare-bones outfit that he rode to victory during the primary season, more concert tour than presidential campaign, according to interviews and documents filed with the Federal Election Commission through Saturday night. And some Republicans believe he is effectively out of time to invest in the kind of large-scale infrastructure that the Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, will bring to the polls in November.”

Powell Says Clinton Trying to Pin Email Scandal on Him

August 21, 2016 at 9:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Referring to Hillary Clinton’s personal email troubles, former Secretary of State Colin Powell told People that Clinton’s staff is “trying to pin it on me.”

Said Powell: “The truth is, she was using the private email server for a year before I sent her a memo telling her what I did.”

More Turmoil Coming in the Trump Campaign?

August 21, 2016 at 2:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “Political director Jim Murphy and pollster Tony Fabrizio are among a handful of Trump staffers known to have expressed frustration to close friends in recent days — suggesting the new team has pushed them out of the loop to the point that they have learned of some new campaign plans either from the media or by watching the candidate on television.”

“Will they head for the exits? Stay tuned. National GOP leaders are worried more departures will cause more questions about a campaign team already considered not up to the challenges of the final months of the campaign.”

The End of Political Journalism

August 21, 2016 at 11:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Matt Taibbi: “Like the old adage about quarterbacks – if you think you have two good ones, you probably have none – this basically means we have no credible news media left. Apart from a few brave islands of resistance, virtually all the major news organizations are now fully in the tank for one side or the other.”

“The last month or so of Trump-Hillary coverage may have been the worst stretch of pure journo-shilling we’ve seen since the run-up to the Iraq war. In terms of political media, there’s basically nothing left on the air except Trump-bashing or Hillary-bashing.”

Trump Paid Up to Boost Fundraising

August 21, 2016 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Donald Trump campaign’s boasts of a formidable fundraising month in July spooked Democrats who feared their financial advantage could be slipping. But a closer inspection of the campaign finance report filed just before Saturday’s midnight deadline indicates the haul came at a steep price, and the campaign was still not dedicating resources to catching up on building the staff and field organization that all previous presidential efforts have required.”

“The money that the Trump campaign raised also didn’t come cheap. The campaign more than doubled its spending from the previous month to $18.5 million in July, far more than in any other period of the campaign. But most of that money went toward expanding the campaign’s online fundraising operation.”

Details on Trump’s Deportation Plan Coming

August 21, 2016 at 10:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump’s new campaign manager Kellyanne Conway told CNN that one of his titular policies — a deportation force for undocumented immigrants — is “to be determined.”

Said Conway: “As the weeks unfold, he will lay out the specifics of that plan that he would implement as president of the United States.”

Bachmann Says She’s Advising Trump

August 21, 2016 at 10:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) told Minnesota Public Radio that she is advising Donald Trump on foreign policy.

Said Bachmann: “He also recognizes there is a threat around the world, not just here in Minnesota, of radical Islam. I wish our President Obama also understood the threat of radical Islam and took it seriously.”

Thanks for your patience with the sporadic posting schedule.

I’ve been in Alaska with my family for the last week. We hiked about 15 miles to see spectacular views of Exit Glacier and the Harding Icefield. We biked about 35 miles ending up on the Homer Spit, the farthest point west you can drive in the United States. We kayaked in Kachemak Bay and saw whales, bald eagles and sea otters. We ended the trip with a float down the Kenai River.

Alaska is a truly spectacular state and I can’t wait to visit again.

Now, back to politics!

Clinton Begins Plans for a White House Agenda

August 21, 2016 at 12:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Hillary Clinton’s increasingly confident campaign has begun crafting a detailed agenda for her possible presidency, with plans to focus on measures aimed at creating jobs, boosting infrastructure spending and enacting immigration reform if current polling holds and she is easily elected to the White House in November,” the Washington Post reports.

“In recent weeks, as her leads over GOP nominee Donald Trump have expanded, Clinton has started ramping up for a presidency defined by marquee legislation she has promised to seek immediately. The pace and scale of the planning reflect growing expectations among Democrats that she will win and take office in January alongside a new Democratic majority in the Senate.”

“While careful not to sound as if she is measuring the draperies quite yet, Clinton now describes what she calls improved odds for passage of an overhaul of immigration laws — the first legislative priority she outlined in detail last year — and what could be a bipartisan effort to rebuild the nation’s roads, bridges, airports, rail system and ports.”

Don’t Bet on Ginsburg Retiring Anytime Soon

August 21, 2016 at 12:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “For those envisioning a line of moving vans at the Supreme Court and a new president immediately reordering life at the marble palace, this small splash of cold water: Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 83, has already hired the four clerks who will assist her through June 2018.”

Clinton Super PAC Outpacing Team Trump

August 21, 2016 at 12:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The super PAC backing Democrat Hillary Clinton vastly outraised the outside groups supporting Republican Donald Trump in July,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The pro-Clinton group, Priorities USA Action, raised $9.9 million last month, less than the $12 million it raised in June, and ended July with more than $38 million in the bank. Meanwhile, a pro-Trump group called Great America PAC raised $2.4 million last month and ended July with less than $990,000 on hand.”

Republicans Divided on Whether to Cut Trump Off

August 21, 2016 at 12:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A sharpening debate has emerged in Republican circles over whether and when to cut ties with Donald Trump, who has shaken up his campaign team as his poll numbers have dropped,” The Hill reports.

“While some in the GOP have called for Republicans to cut Trump loose sooner rather than later to avoid lasting damage, strategists concerned about control of Congress in 2017 say that would be disastrous.”
