Early Voting Shows Upsurge In Women

October 21, 2016 at 10:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For much of his campaign, Donald Trump has done more to repel voting women than he has to win them over. Now mounting evidence suggests they are already punishing him for it at the ballot box,” Politico reports.

“In three crucial battlegrounds — North Carolina, Florida and Georgia — women are casting early ballots in disproportionate numbers. And in North Carolina, a must-win state for Trump with detailed early voting data available, it’s clear that Democratic women have been particularly motivated to turn out or turn ballots in.”

Trump Is In a Funk

October 21, 2016 at 10:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “After weeks of controversy and declining poll numbers, Trump and his campaign have settled into a dark funk. Even as he vows to prevail in the race, the GOP nominee’s mood has soured with less than three weeks to go until Election Day.”

“The gloomy mood has extended to his signature rallies, which Trump used to find fun. During the primaries, he would bound onto rally stages bursting with energy and a sense of excitement that intensified as the crowds chanted his name and cheered his every word. He would regularly schedule news conferences, call into news shows and chat with reporters, eager to spar with them. He would say politically incorrect things and then watch his polling numbers soar. He used to be the winner.”

Clinton Transition Team Steps Up Work

October 21, 2016 at 5:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The secretive team tasked with preparing for a possible Hillary Clinton presidency is ramping up big time,” Politico reports.

“With polls pointing to the likelihood of a Clinton win, her transition team is hiring staff, culling through the resumés of possible Cabinet nominees and reaching out to key Democrats for input, according to people familiar with the process.”

Biden Says He’d Take Trump ‘Behind the Gym’

October 21, 2016 at 5:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vice President Joe Biden took Donald Trump to task over comments he made bragging about his ability to grope women, saying he wished he were in high school so “I could take him behind the gym,” ABC News reports.

Said Biden: “What he said and did and does is the text book definition of sexual assault. He said because I am famous, because I am a star, because I am a billionaire I can do things other people cant. What a disgusting assertion for anyone to make.”

Why You’re Having Trouble with the Internet Today

October 21, 2016 at 4:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

For those having problems with the Internet today, Wired reports it’s due to a distributed denial of service attack that has taken down many websites on the Eastern seaboard of the United States.

It’s also impacted the Disqus commenting system used on Political Wire.

Gizmodo: “Some think the attack was a political conspiracy, like an attempt to take down the internet so that people wouldn’t be able to read the leaked Clinton emails on Wikileaks. Others think it’s the usual Russian assault. No matter who did it, we should expect incidents like this to get worse in the future. While DDoS attacks used to be a pretty weak threat, we’re entering a new era.”

Rick Hasen: “Call me paranoid. But I worry this is a dry run (from Russia?) for more Election Day shenanigans.”

Facebook Staff Wanted Some of Trump’s Posts Deleted

October 21, 2016 at 3:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Some of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s posts on Facebook have set off an intense debate inside the social-media company over the past year, with some employees arguing certain posts about banning Muslims from entering the U.S. should be removed for violating the site’s rules on hate speech,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The decision to allow Mr. Trump’s posts went all the way to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who ruled in December that it would be inappropriate to censor the candidate… That decision has prompted employees across the company to complain on Facebook’s internal messaging service and in person to Mr. Zuckerberg and other managers that it was bending the site’s rules for Mr. Trump, and some employees who work in a group charged with reviewing content on Facebook threatened to quit.”

Trump Says He’ll Go After Clinton When He Wins

October 21, 2016 at 2:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump said he will have “lots of options” to go after Hillary Clinton if he’s elected president, Politico reports.

“Trump has labeled Clinton a criminal for using a private email server when she led the State Department and deleting thousands of emails, arguing that the Democratic presidential nominee shouldn’t even be allowed to run. He has since ramped up his rhetoric, threatening during the second presidential debate to jail the former secretary of state.”

Early Vote Shifts Heavily to Democrats In Key States

October 21, 2016 at 12:06 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Catalist, a voter data firm that works mostly with Democratic campaigns, provided The Washington Post with early vote numbers from several battleground states that allowed us to compare current returns with the number of ballots returned in years past.”

“In seven states for which returned ballot data was available by party, Democratic ballots made up a larger percentage of what had come back by the 20-day mark (that is, by 20 days before Election Day) than in 2012 (or in 2008 for Florida). In some cases, like Arizona and North Carolina, the shift to the Democrats was substantial.”

Bayh Didn’t Stay In Condo At All In 2010

October 21, 2016 at 11:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Evan Bayh says that his Indianapolis condominium has long been his home, and that he has spent ‘lots and lots’ of time there since deciding to run for his old Senate seat. But a copy of his schedule shows Bayh did not stay overnight there once during his last year in office in 2010.”

“The schedule provided to The Associated Press shows the Democrat spent taxpayer money, campaign funds or let other people pay for him to stay in Indianapolis hotels on the relatively rare occasions he returned from Washington, D.C. During the same period, he spent $3,000 in taxpayer money on what appeared to be job hunting trips to New York, despite the assertion of his campaign that the trips were devoted to official media appearances.”

October 21, 2016 at 10:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Trump May Pose Problem for Ryan In Speaker Vote

October 21, 2016 at 10:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Hill: “If Trump is trounced by Hillary Clinton on Nov. 8, many believe he’ll turn his wrath — and his millions of loyal followers — against Ryan as he runs for reelection as Speaker. Trump already appears to be looking for ways to explain his potential loss in the White House race.”

“Fox News host Sean Hannity, an ally of Trump, is dialing up the rhetoric against Ryan, telling the Washington Post this week that the Wisconsin lawmaker is a ‘saboteur’ who ‘needed to be called out and replaced.'”

Bonus Quote of the Day

October 21, 2016 at 10:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“We all know that it happens on the margins, but it’s the extreme margins and probably as much on one side as the other.  And so the notion that it affects election results, particularly in a presidential race, is just absurd.”

— Sen. Jeff Flake, in an interview with NBC News, on Donald Trump’s allegations that voter fraud could cause him to lose the election.

Steele Won’t Vote for Trump

October 21, 2016 at 9:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former RNC Chairman Michael Steele said he won’t vote for Donald Trump, BuzzFeed reports.

Steele said Trump has “captured the racist underbelly, that frustration, that angry underbelly of American life and gave voice to that.”

He added: “I was damn near puking during the debates.”
