FBI Kept Cases Involving Trump and Clinton Quiet

November 1, 2016 at 9:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The F.B.I. and Justice Department faced a hard decision in two investigations this past summer that had the potential to rock the presidential election. The first case involved Donald J. Trump’s campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, and secretive business dealings in Ukraine. The second focused on Hillary Clinton’s relationships with donors to her family foundation,” the New York Times reports.

“At the urging of the Justice Department, the F.B.I. agreed not to actively pursue either case so close to the election.”

“Against this backdrop, the decision of the F.B.I. director, James Comey, to send a letter to Congress last week about a renewed inquiry concerning Mrs. Clinton’s emails is not just a departure from longstanding policy; it has plunged the F.B.I. and the Justice Department directly into the election, precisely what Justice officials were trying to avoid.”

Clinton Starts Advertising In New States

November 1, 2016 at 9:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton’s campaign started new ad campaigns in four states: Colorado, Virginia, Michigan and New Mexico, the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The campaign hadn’t previously aired any ads in the latter two states, where polling shows Mrs. Clinton with strong leads. Those messages are being bolstered by a $6 million ad buy from Priorities USA Action, Mrs. Clinton’s allied super PAC, which expanded its buys in Florida and Pennsylvania, and for the first time bought ads in Wisconsin.”

Freedom Caucus Will Discuss Ryan In Secret Meeting

November 1, 2016 at 8:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Top members of the House Freedom Caucus will hold a rare, pre-election strategy session in Washington Wednesday to chart the group’s moves in November and beyond,” Politico reports.

“One of the most pressing questions preoccupying Washington is what the group will do about Paul Ryan. The Wisconsin Republican has said he intends to to seek another term as House speaker but has rankled members of the group of several dozen Republican lawmakers that drove John Boehner out of the speakership last year. The Freedom Caucus is also weighing proposals meant to empower its members, some at the expense of GOP leadership’s authority.”

Trump Gets Endorsement of KKK Newspaper

November 1, 2016 at 8:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Among the small number of American newspapers that have embraced Donald Trump’s campaign, there is one, in particular, that stands out. It is called the Crusader — and it is the official newspaper of the Ku Klux Klan,” the Washington Post reports.

“Under the banner ‘Make America Great Again,’ the paper’s current issue devoted its entire front page to a lengthy defense of Trump’s message — an embrace some have labeled a de facto endorsement.”

Rendell Says Clinton Making Mistake Attacking Comey

November 1, 2016 at 8:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former DNC Chairman Ed Rendell told WPHT that Hillary Clinton’s campaign was making a mistake by attacking FBI director James Comey over how he handled recent developments into the investigation of Clinton’s private email server.

Said Rendell: “I think that’s, I wouldn’t do that. Again, you know, I’m not running the campaign by any means, but I wouldn’t do that.”

Quote of the Day

“Under a Donald Trump administration, ladies and gentleman, there will never be any bullshit.”

— Retired college basketball coach Bobby Knight, quoted by Yahoo News.

Both Candidates Suffer in the Spotlight

November 1, 2016 at 6:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Lid: “Entering the final week of the 2016 election — and, oh, what a long and strange road it’s been — there’s an unusual dynamic at play. Unlike most of the post-convention news cycles, Hillary Clinton has been the lead headline every day since Friday’s news of the FBI’s reexamination of the Clinton email investigation. Think about it: Most of the dominant August-September-October headlines centered on a Trump controversy: Trump’s ‘birther’ walkback, his rough first debate performance, Alicia Machado, Trump’s taxes, the Access Hollywood tape, the allegations of sexual assault against Trump, and his refusal to say if he’ll accept the results of the election.”

“With the exception of a few news pops related to the Wikileaks disclosures, the news spotlight hasn’t been this focused on Clinton since her bad week at the beginning of September (the ‘basket of deplorables’ comment and her pneumonia collapse.)”

“We’ve seen throughout this election that whichever candidate is in the front of voters’ minds tends to suffer, which explains why this week has been so bumpy for Clinton. And it’s a good reminder why Clinton is turning her closing argument from a positive message to a reprise of the greatest hits of her attacks against Trump.”

Podesta Said Clinton Needed to ‘Dump All Those Emails’

November 1, 2016 at 5:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The day the original story about Hillary Clinton’s private email server broke, Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta wrote to another top Clinton aide that the campaign was “going to have to dump all those emails,” CBS News reports.

The Clinton campaign has said that by “dump,” Podesta meant release to the public—like in a document dump—and not deleting or getting rid of them.

Yes, You’re Losing Sleep Over This Election

November 1, 2016 at 5:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Wearable devices that track exercise and other vital signs reveal what many have suspected: The election is making us lose sleep,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The night of the first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, Sept. 26, Fitbit users nationwide slept an average of 4.2 minutes less than they did the Monday before and the Monday after the debate. Users’ average sleep typically varies only about one to two minutes from one Monday to the next, so the change on the debate night is statistically significant,”

GOP Candidates Finally Don’t Have to Discuss Trump

November 1, 2016 at 5:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Hillary Clinton email controversy has given down-ballot Republicans something they badly need in the final days of the election: an opportunity to go on offense and talk about something other than Donald Trump,” the Washington Post reports.

“Individual GOP candidates’ efforts to distance themselves from Trump were being overwhelmed by the furor over an 11-year-old video in which the nominee boasted of kissing and groping women without their consent, and the subsequent claims by a procession of women that he had actually committed such acts… But now, Republicans see a chance to change the subject and remind voters of the drama and perceived moral ambiguity that has surrounded the Clintons for more than a quarter-century.”

Clinton Campaign Dismisses Tracking Poll as Bad

November 1, 2016 at 5:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton’s campaign described the ABC News-Washington Post tracking poll that showed Donald Trump ahead as “bad polling,” according to Politico.

Said a senior Clinton aide: “Sorry. It’s just not what we see at all; it’s not what other people seem to have. There just seems to be something about that model that seems off.”

Big Majority Say Trump Has the Wrong Personality

November 1, 2016 at 1:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Gallup survey finds that 67 percent of registered voters say Donald Trump doesn’t have the “personality and leadership qualities a president should have.”

Just 32% say that he does.

Plans To Watch Polls For Fraud Raise Fears Of Intimidation

November 1, 2016 at 1:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“One question on many people’s minds is whether polling places will be disrupted on Election Day. There are concerns that vigilantes, armed with cameras and notebooks, will intimidate voters they suspect of committing fraud. Such groups insist they’ll follow the law, but civil rights groups are on alert just in case,” NPR reports.

“There have already been some disturbing incidents. In Durham, N.C., a voter reported someone videotaping license plates outside an early-polling site. In West Palm Beach, Fla., a voter complained of being intimidated by a rowdy group of electioneers.”

Clinton Books Last Minute Ads In Colorado

November 1, 2016 at 11:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton hasn’t run a TV ad in Colorado since July, but her campaign said it planned buy to new commercials in that state for the final week of the campaign, the Denver Post reports.

Asked about the timing, her Colorado staff said the new ads were not in response to the latest controversy over Clinton’s e-mails. Rather, they said the intent is to help down ballot candidates.
