Koch Brothers Network Won’t Even Mention Trump

October 17, 2016 at 8:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “These activists have been sprinting through Pennsylvania neighborhoods, talking to people about how bad Democrat Katie McGinty would be as a U.S. senator. Here to help save Republican Sen. Pat Toomey — and, more broadly, the party’s control of the Senate — are employees and volunteers for Americans for Prosperity, the best-known group financed by conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch.”

“Similar scenes are playing out in North Carolina, Florida and Ohio.”

“In addition to having nail-biting Senate races this year, those four states are some of the most important battlegrounds in the presidential race. Yet the Koch activists interacting with millions of people who could be Trump’s most crucial voters aren’t supposed to utter a word about him or Hillary Clinton, a Democrat they’d been preparing for years to attack.”

Clinton Shifts to Cautious Strategy

October 17, 2016 at 8:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

James Hohmann: “Like a quarterback who is ahead by a few touchdowns at the start of the fourth quarter, she has been running down the clock with a cautious, front-porch-style campaign that leaves little room for unforced errors. The Boston Globe tabulated both candidates’ travels over past two-and-a-half months, and the numbers are stark: Clinton held 52 events compared with Trump’s 88 between Aug. 1 and Oct. 10. President Obama held 74 events and Mitt Romney 76 during the same period in 2012. And over the same period in 2008, Obama held 108 events and John McCain 100″

Quote of the Day

October 17, 2016 at 8:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It’s splitting right before your eyes. It’s happening now. There is a civil war in the party that is going on right now. The question is whether, after the election, the party will be able to repair itself; or cease to exist; or continue to exist in some diminished way.”

— GOP strategist Rick Tyler, quoted by The Hill.

Trump Says He’ll Win on Surge of ‘Silent’ Voters

October 17, 2016 at 7:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Donald Trump, trailing in opinion polls and facing new accusations by women of unwanted sexual contact, has begun arguing he will win the election on a surge of silent backers who have gone undetected by surveys and the political establishment … His theory — which others view skeptically — holds that fear of social stigma prevents some voters from admitting they back him, including when talking to pollsters.”

Trump Son-In-Law Discussing TV Network

October 17, 2016 at 7:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner has informally approached one of the media industry’s top dealmakers about the prospect of setting up a Trump television network after the presidential election in November,” the Financial Times reports.

“Mr Kushner — an increasingly influential figure in the billionaire’s presidential campaign — contacted Aryeh Bourkoff, the founder and chief executive of LionTree, a boutique investment bank, within the past couple of months, according to three people with knowledge of the matter.”

Most Republicans Think Election Could Be Stolen

October 17, 2016 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Politico/Morning Consult poll finds that Donald Trump’s repeated warnings about a “rigged” election are having effect: 73% of Republicans think the election could be swiped from him. Just 17% of Democrats agree with the prospect of massive fraud at the ballot box.

Obama and Holder Will Lead Redistricting Effort

October 17, 2016 at 6:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As Democrats aim to capitalize on this year’s Republican turmoil and start building back their own decimated bench, former Attorney General Eric Holder will chair a new umbrella group focused on redistricting reform—with the aim of taking on the gerrymandering that’s left the party behind in statehouses and made winning a House majority far more difficult,” Politico reports.

“The new group, called the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, was developed in close consultation with the White House. President Barack Obama himself has now identified the group—which will coordinate campaign strategy, direct fundraising, organize ballot initiatives and put together legal challenges to state redistricting maps—as the main focus of his political activity once he leaves office.”

Clinton Holds Wide National Lead

October 17, 2016 at 12:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new George Washington University Battleground Poll finds Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump by eight points nationally, 47% to 39%, with Gary Johnson at 8% and Jill Stein at 2%.

Clinton held a two-point lead in early September.

Ohio Is Competitive Again

October 16, 2016 at 10:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “After several disastrous weeks for Trump, Ohio is suddenly back in play. Clinton has taken a lead in four of the last five public polls there, and the Trump campaign has returned to a war footing with the state’s GOP establishment. For Republicans, it’s a disturbing turn of events in a state that is essential to Trump’s hopes of winning the White House.”

The HuffPost Pollster average now shows Clinton leading in Ohio, 43% to 41%.

Inside Trump’s Echo Chamber

October 16, 2016 at 8:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “He is preaching to the converted. He is lashing out at anyone who is not completely loyal. He is detaching himself from and delegitimizing the institutions of American political life. And he is proclaiming conspiracies everywhere — in polls (rigged), in debate moderators (biased) and in the election itself (soon to be stolen).”

“In the presidential campaign’s home stretch, Donald Trump is fully inhabiting his own echo chamber. The Republican nominee has turned inward, increasingly isolated from the country’s mainstream and leaders of his own party, and determined to rouse his most fervent supporters with dire warnings that their populist movement could fall prey to dark and collusive forces.”

Should Clinton Try to Expand the Map?

October 16, 2016 at 8:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Hillary Clinton faces a striking choice in the final three weeks of the campaign: to expand her efforts to states that Democrats haven’t won in a generation, or to stay a current course that, if conditions hold, would deliver her a resounding electoral college victory,” the Washington Post reports.

“After two tumultuous weeks focused on Donald Trump’s behavior toward women, Clinton is ahead in nearly all of the key battleground states where her campaign has directed the most resources, according to many recent polls. But some once-solidly Republican states — notably Arizona, Georgia and Utah — now also appear to be in play.”

Giuliani Says Democrats More Likely to Cheat

October 16, 2016 at 3:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rudy Giuliani said that Democrats “are more likely to promote voter fraud than Republicans, citing elections in the cities of Chicago and Philadelphia as examples,” Politico reports.

Said Giuliani: “I’ve found very few situations where Republicans cheat. They don’t control the inner cities the way Democrats do. Maybe if Republicans controlled the inner cities, they’d do as much cheating as Democrats.”

He added: “I’m sorry. Dead people generally vote for Democrats rather than Republicans.”

Trump At Risk of Losing Arizona

October 16, 2016 at 3:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Three weeks until Election Day, the Trump campaign and the RNC are at risk of letting historically red Arizona slip away,” NBC News reports.

Said GOP operative Matthew Benson: “Barring something unforeseen, Trump is going to lose Arizona, and you’re still not seeing the type of activity you’d expect to see if he expects to save it.”

“The campaign has placed few resources in the state. There are five staffers aiding Trump’s bid, paid for by a combination of the campaign, the RNC and the Arizona Republican Party.”

What State Is Most Important Now?

October 16, 2016 at 3:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Silver: “The swing state map is broader than in 2012. Whereas by the end of that election, only a half-dozen states were really in doubt, there are 10 to 15 states that remain interesting this year. But Florida stands out according to our tipping-point index because winning it would all but clinch the election for Clinton.”

Republican HQ In North Carolina Firebombed

October 16, 2016 at 3:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

North Carolina police are investigating an apparent firebombing of a local Republican headquarters, an incident that one state GOP official called an act of “political terrorism,” the Charlotte Observer reports.

Police said the words, “Nazi Republicans get out of town or else” were spray painted on the side of an adjacent building.
