What Republicans Didn’t Talk About

August 17, 2013 at 2:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

National Public Radio: “Here’s what the Republican National Committee members didn’t talk about at their summer meeting, but, rather, talked around: their existential need to broaden their base of support, and how so far their traditional base is not exactly embracing the idea.”

“Publicly, Priebus and others at the three-day meeting say the project, while a long-term endeavor, is on track… Privately, other Republicans are less sanguine — and already wondering if it will take another White House loss in 2016 for the party base to accept what they are already certain is demographic inevitability.”

Priebus Rebuilds the RNC

August 17, 2013 at 12:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

That Reince Priebus still heads the Republican National Committee is unusual, the Wall Street Journal reports.

“No national head of either party in the modern era has retained that seat after a loss in the presidential election. Some now expect him to keep the job through the 2016 election, which would make him the longest-serving GOP chairman in nearly 30 years.”

“The chairman has poured most of his energies into raising money — he said he spends five hours a day on donor calls — and into building out the party’s infrastructure, including an aggressive, state-by-state outreach to minority voters… The GOP ended June with $7 million more in cash than the Democrats had, the federal records show.”

August 17, 2013 at 12:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bob Kerrey is in talks to be the latest former senator to get a post at the State Department, Politico reports.

Said Kerrey: “I’ve had conversations with them about taking on a project.”

Kerrey wouldn’t discuss what the “project” would be, but stressed that the position wouldn’t be full-time.

Christie Vetoes Gun Ban He Proposed

August 17, 2013 at 10:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) “refused to sign three controversial gun control measures sitting on his desk — including a version of a weapon ban that he had called for,” the Newark Star Ledger reports.

Christie altered two bills and sent them back to the legislature but “completely axed a bill that would ban the Barrett .50 caliber rifle(A3659), which is the most powerful weapon commonly available to civilians. Christie had called for a ban on future sales of the weapon in his own package of violent prevention measures outlined in April.”

In his veto message, Christie “said that his proposal to ban the weapon was more narrowly tailored than the bill the Legislature passed, which would have also required owners to give them up.”

Police Investigating Attempts to Retrieve Crack Video

August 17, 2013 at 10:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Toronto police are investigating attempts by associates of Mayor Rob Ford to retrieve the crack cocaine video, the Toronto Star reports.

Ford’s loyalists “were on a mission to obtain the video, which Ford was publicly saying did not exist. Two Star reporters who viewed the video have described an obviously impaired Mayor Ford smoking what appears to be crack cocaine and making homophobic and racist remarks in response to goading questions from a man not seen in the video.”

RNC Boycott Would Extend to Spanish Language Channels

August 17, 2013 at 7:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A RNC spokesman told Politico that the party’s newly-passed boycott of NBC and CNN would also extend to their Spanish-language channels: Telemundo and CNN Español.

Said Sean Spicer: “My understanding is that they both would be excluded.”

“That leaves Univision, the country’s leading Spanish-language network, as the obvious go-to for any Republican primary debate targeted toward America’s rapidly growing Latino population, which the GOP is desperate to make inroads with in 2016.”

Always Deny You’re Running for President

August 17, 2013 at 7:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For politicians planning or tempted to run for the presidency in 2016, the to-do list is formidable. What’s striking is how methodically most of them are plowing through it while they pretend nothing of the sort is going on,” the AP reports.

“Somehow, it has been decreed that politicians who fancy themselves presidential timber must wear a veil concealing the nakedness of their ambition. They must let the contours show through, however — more and more over time — while hoping everyone doesn’t tire of the tease.”

Brown’s Successful Second Act

August 17, 2013 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The New York Times notes California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) “is enjoying a degree of success and authority he and his opponents could scarcely have imagined when he returned to Sacramento to begin a second tour as governor in 2010.”

“The state’s budget problems are largely resolved, at least for the short term. Mr. Brown is the dominant figure in Sacramento, strengthened by overwhelming Democratic control of the Legislature and the decline of the Republican Party. He has pushed through major initiatives on education financing and prison reorganization. Even Republicans say his re-election next year seems considerably more than likely.”

“Brown is not saying whether he will seek re-election, but it seems
nearly unthinkable that he will not. He does not appear to be even
slightly worried about his prospects.”

Obama Loses Younger Voters

August 16, 2013 at 8:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Harry Enten: “Obama’s overall approval was 50.8%… in the month before election, but it has decreased by 5.1pt, to 45.7%, since July. The decline, it turns out, can mostly be ascribed to younger voters.”

“Compared to his average approval a month before the election, Obama’s approval rating since the beginning of July has dropped 9.3pt, to 52.3%, among 18- to 29-year-olds. His approval among 30- to 49-year-olds has dipped by 5.7pt, to 45.5%.”

“His approval among those older than 50 has stayed relatively stable comparatively. He’s only down to 1.5pt among 50- to 64-year-olds, and 2.7pt among those older than 65. Indeed, his approval with 50- to 64-year-olds has actually been 0.2pt higher than among 30- to 49-year-olds.”

Quote of the Day

August 16, 2013 at 8:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It simply means I was invited to a wingding, and I think anything in Iowa makes a wingding out of a wingding, and that is all it is.”

— Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), quoted by ABC News, saying no one should assume she’s interested in running for president because of a trip to Iowa.

Perry Under Investigation for Abuse of Office

August 16, 2013 at 8:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A Texas judge says he plans to have a special prosecutor review allegations that Gov. Rick Perry (R) abused the powers of his office and broke the law over a veto that cut funding for state public corruption investigators, CBS Dallas-Fort Worth reports.

Judge Robert Richardson expects to name a special prosecutor as early as next week to look at the complaint filed by a watchdog group, Texans for Public Justice.

McDonnell’s Wife Bought Stock in Donor’s Company

August 16, 2013 at 8:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Virginia first lady Maureen McDonnell “twice purchased stock in Star Scientific in the same timeframe she and Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) were taking steps to promote the dietary supplement company,” the Washington Post reports.

“McDonnell’s relationship with Jonnie R. Williams Sr., the chief executive of Star Scientific, is now at the center of ongoing federal and state investigations.”

A spokesman said the first lady did not inform the governor either time she purchased stock.

RNC Urges Passage of Immigration Reform

August 16, 2013 at 8:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Republican National Committee “passed a resolution Friday calling on Congress to pass an immigration reform bill by the end of the year–but it stopped well short of the bipartisan compromise passed by the Senate earlier this year, omitting a ‘path to citizenship’ for any class of illegal immigrant,” Time reports.

“The resolution calls on Congress to create a special legal status for illegal immigrants brought to America as minors–or ‘DREAMers,’ as immigration activists call them, for the eponymous bill to provide them legal status–which would include a renewable five-year work permit. They would have to provide proof of employment or enrollment to retain the status.”

RNC Votes to Exclude CNN and NBC from Debates

August 16, 2013 at 8:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 1 Comment

The Republican National Committee “formally decided Friday not to partner with CNN and NBC News for any presidential debates during the 2016 election cycle, a rebuke of the networks’ plans to air programs about Hillary Rodham Clinton,” the Washington Post reports.

“Top RNC leaders voted unanimously on a resolution stating that the national party will not partner with the networks nor sanction any primary debates they plan to sponsor and broadcast.”

Alabama GOP Seeks to Purge Members Over Gay Marriage

August 16, 2013 at 7:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A proposed amendment to the Alabama Republican Party bylaws “would allow the removal of the Alabama College Republicans chairwoman, who spoke out in favor of same-sex marriage in June, from the party’s steering committee,” the Birmingham News reports.

Carlos Danger Weiners

August 16, 2013 at 7:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Anthony Weiner may be lagging in the race for New York City mayor, but he is winning in another area — hot dog marketing,” ABC News reports.

“The delicious combination of Anthony Weiner’s name and his sexually suggestive Twitter antics were apparently too good to pass up for one Florida marketing man, who has joined forces with an Illinois hot dog company to create a hot dog brand called Carlos Danger Weiners, which he has incorporated into the company Carlos Danger LLC.”
