Summers Likely Pick for Fed Chairman

August 27, 2013 at 9:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A source from Team Obama told CNBC that Larry Summers will likely be
named chairman of the Federal Reserve in a few weeks though he is ‘still
being vetted’ so it might take a little longer.”

Josh Green: “Summers, if he’s nominated, will get a huge
break from the Senate Democratic caucus, because, unlike the GOP caucus,
it contains no serious presidential contenders. Why does that matter?
Because presidential candidates are almost always captive to the
passions of their party’s base, and the liberal base of the Democratic
Party loathes Summers. That would produce tremendous pressure to oppose
him.”

When Mr. Booker Goes to Washington

August 27, 2013 at 8:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Washington Post envisions a Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ):

“Booker is no
stranger to Washington. His parents met here. He was born here. He spent
his Christmas breaks from Oxford here. Now a political sensation and
media darling with nearly 1.5 million Twitter followers, the 44-year-old
seems to have been engineered in a political lab to walk the halls of
Congress….He is prepping for the eventual move to the capital with a
nightly audio book appointment with ‘This Town,’ the bestseller by New
York Times reporter Mark Leibovich that paints an unflattering portrait
of official Washington.”

Battle for Black Voters in New York City

August 27, 2013 at 7:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “William
C. Thompson Jr. is the sole African-American among the leading
candidates for mayor of New York City, and he has long counted on the
support of black voters to propel him to victory in a crowded Democratic
field. But two weeks from the hotly contested primary election, Mr.
Thompson’s campaign is confronting an unexpected challenge: Bill de
Blasio, a white candidate, has threatened Mr. Thompson’s support among
blacks with his fierce denunciation of the Police
Department’s stop-and-frisk tactics.”

August 27, 2013 at 7:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A federal judge allowed the released of video testimony by President Gerald Ford on the assassination attempt by Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme in 1975.

Sacramento Bee: “The 20 minutes of testimony, which Ford gave in room 345 of the Old Executive Office Building adjacent to the White House on Nov. 1, 1975, was conducted at the request of Sacramento defense attorney John Virga and played for jurors during Fromme’s trial. The tape, which includes several minutes of audio discussion among lawyers and the judge before and after Ford’s testimony, was later sealed and has been largely forgotten and removed from public view in the years since.”

U.S. Will Hit Debt Limit in Mid-October

August 27, 2013 at 5:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The United States “is set to run out of borrowing authority in mid-October, leaving the government at a high risk of not being able to pay for Social Security checks, military salaries and other operations,” the Washington Post reports.

“Republicans are demanding significant new spending cuts in exchange for increasing the nation’s $16.7 trillion debt limit, with some GOP lawmakers insisting on a delay or the scrapping of President Obama’s signature health-care law. Obama, meanwhile, says he will not negotiate on the debt limit, the government’s legal cap on borrowing.”

“With the two sides far apart, there is no clear path to resolving the differences. Not raising the limit would ultimately lead to a default, undermining the nation’s credit.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

August 26, 2013 at 8:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I think it’s arrogant that we think as people that we can somehow change the climate of the whole earth when science is telling us that there’s a cycle to all this. And that cycle was occurring before the industrial revolution and I suspect will occur way into the future.”

— Rep. Todd Rokita (R-IN), quoted by the Purdue Exponent, arguing humans did not cause climate change.

Why Millennials Won’t Play Politics

August 26, 2013 at 4:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ron Fournier: “The trouble is that Millennials believe traditional politics and government (especially Washington) are the worst avenues to great things. They are more likely to be social entrepreneurs, working outside government to create innovative and measurably successful solutions to the nation’s problems, even if only on a relatively small scale. … A generation ago, government had a monopoly on public service. To Millennials, the world is filled with injustice and need, but government isn’t the solution. They have apps for that.”

Russia Protected Snowden in China Too

August 26, 2013 at 3:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Before American fugitive Edward Snowden arrived in Moscow in June — an arrival that Russian officials have said caught them by surprise — he spent several days living at the Russian Consulate in Hong Kong,” the Washington Post reports.

Kerry Lays Groundwork for Attack on Syria

August 26, 2013 at 3:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Secretary of State John Kerry said the Syrian government’s use of chemical weapons against civilians was a “moral obscenity,” delivering the clearest indication yet that the Obama administration is preparing to attack President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said Kerry: “Make no mistake: President Obama believes there must be accountability for those who would use the world’s most heinous weapons against the world’s most vulnerable people.”

New York Times: “Kerry’s remarks, in a prepared statement he read at the State Department, reinforced the administration’s toughening stance on the Syria conflict, which is now well into its third year, and he suggested it was moving closer to a military response in consultation with America’s allies.”

John Lewis Tops Bestseller Lists

August 26, 2013 at 2:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. John Lewis’ (D-GA) debut graphic novel, March, “is a bona fide hit, landing in the top spot on multiple best-seller lists,” Roll Call reports.

“The critically acclaimed comic… chronicles his devotion to the philosophy of nonviolence opposition and how he put it into practice during the civil rights movement.”

Obama Advisers Divided Over Fiscal Showdown

August 26, 2013 at 2:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Facing a sixth fiscal showdown with congressional Republicans, President Obama’s economic and political advisers are divided over how far to push in pursuit of a deal on the budget and the nation’s debt limit, according to two people familiar with the discussions,” Bloomberg reports.

“The debate centers on how comprehensive an agreement the White House should seek to end the automatic, across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration, which is set to slash $109 billion from projected defense and domestic discretionary spending in 2014.”

“The economic team is pushing to explore a deal that replaces sequestration with targeted cuts and spending increases, according to the people. The political aides argue that the bigger the agreement the more likely it is to collapse.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

August 26, 2013 at 1:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Let’s not talk about impeachment. Let’s actually talk about the
policies we disagree with.”

— Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), on NBC’s Meet the Press.

Alex Rogers: “Jindal’s plea is backed by a solid political calculation, since he and other Republicans are wary of turning off swing voters less than a year after Obama won a decisive re-election. But that doesn’t mean Jindal has history on his side. Indeed, it would be more surprising if Obama weren’t facing calls for impeachment at this point in his presidency.”

Cruz Backing Incumbents Through His PAC

August 26, 2013 at 10:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Despite a pledge to steer clear of endorsing incumbents, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has financially backed a handful of Senate Republicans through his PAC, including Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), whose campaign Cruz said that he would not endorse, the Washington Post reports.

Cruz’s leadership PAC, Jobs Growth and Freedom Fund, “made only five donations in the first six months of its existence, and all of those dollars went to incumbents.”

Former Senate Candidate Hired a Hit Man

August 26, 2013 at 10:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Tennessee U.S. Senate candidate Thomas Kenneth Owens (D) has been arrested in connection with an attempted murder-for-hire plot, WJHL reports.

“Owens was arrested after he met up with the hit man at a sports bar and paid him $500 as down payment to kill his uncle, Ernest ‘Ernie’ Widby. According to the TBI, Owens brought a picture of the intended victim and the victim’s home address. That’s when law enforcement got involved and arrested Owens after the payment was made.”

The Big Difference Between Cruz and Paul

August 26, 2013 at 10:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “While Ted Cruz and Rand Paul are on the same page when it comes to most issues, there is one BIG different between the two GOP senators: Paul is supporting his fellow senator up for re-election next year (Mitch McConnell), while Cruz isn’t supporting his (John Cornyn).”

“The difference appears to be in the different goals both men may have right now. Rand Paul seems to be intent on trying to take over the GOP and win the internal argument; Ted Cruz seems to be about creating the brand of Ted Cruz and establishing ANTI-party credentials.”

Does U.S. Lose Either Way in Syria?

August 26, 2013 at 10:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Edward Luttwak: “It would be disastrous if President Bashar al-Assad’s regime were to
emerge victorious after fully suppressing the rebellion and restoring
its control over the entire country… But a rebel victory would also be
extremely dangerous for the United States and for many of its allies in
Europe and the Middle East. That’s because extremist groups, some
identified with Al Qaeda, have become the most effective fighting force
in Syria.”

Politico:
“There’s never been more pressure for President Barack Obama do
something about Syria. And there’s never been less consensus on what he
could do, or should do.”

Obama Weighs Which Democrats to Help

August 26, 2013 at 10:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Obama “has no plans to campaign on behalf of the underdog Democrat in an uphill battle against New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and is weighing how much help to give his party’s scandal-enmeshed candidate for governor of Virginia, where Democrats are more bullish about winning,” the AP reports.

“It’s the type of delicate, race-by-race calculation the White House repeatedly will have to make in the 2014, when Obama’s own legacy will be on the line. Next fall, voters will decide whether to elect a Congress that will help Obama achieve his goals for his final two years in office, or whether to elect one that will block him at every turn.”

U.S. Bugged the U.N. Headquarters

August 26, 2013 at 9:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Hill:
“U.S. intelligence officials bugged the United Nations headquarters in
New York, according to a report from a German publication. Operatives
from the National Security Agency were able to decode the UN’s encrypted
e-mail system and hack into the organization’s closed video
teleconferencing system to track communications by UN members, the
report by Der Spiegel said.”
