Clinton Begins Next Phase

August 13, 2013 at 10:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Hillary Clinton’s next phase of life — the co-leader of a family foundation — has officially begun,” Politico reports.

“She’s coming in to her husband’s signature foundation, which has been renamed for all three Clintons (their daughter has an increased presence). It’s the first time the two elder Clintons, both of whom have led independent careers as separate political actors, are yoking their careers together doing essentially the same type of work at the same place, and at the same time, since the 1992 campaign.”

Kerry Taps Old Allies for Top Positions

August 13, 2013 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Secretary of State John Kerry “has filled the top rungs of the State Department with numerous advisers from his 30-year political career in Massachusetts,” the Boston Globe reports.

“Secretaries of state have always had leeway to name their own top officials, but Kerry, like Hillary Rodham Clinton before him, is one of the few politicians to hold the top diplomatic post in modern times. That gives him a deep network of loyal political supporters and experts to take on leadership positions.”

“While enlisting many familiar faces from policy circles, Kerry has also frequently promoted from the career ranks of the Foreign Service and elevated more women to senior posts, according to his supporters in the department.”

Lawmakers Limit Town Hall Meetings

August 13, 2013 at 9:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Though Republicans in recent years have harnessed the political power of these open mic, face-the-music sessions, people from both parties say they are noticing a decline in the number of meetings. They also say they are seeing Congressional offices go to greater lengths to conceal when and where the meetings take place.”

“With memories of those angry protests still vivid, it seems that one of the unintended consequences of a movement that thrived on such open, often confrontational interactions with lawmakers is that there are fewer members of Congress now willing to face their constituents.”

Budget Deficit on Track to 5-Year Low

August 13, 2013 at 8:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The government reported a $97.6 billion deficit for July but remains on track to post its lowest annual budget gap in five years, the AP reports.

Hagan Leads Possible Rivals

August 13, 2013 at 8:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Public Policy Polling survey in North Carolina finds Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) with an eight point lead over both Thom Tillis (R) and Phil Berger (R), 47% to 39%, as well as leads over six other potential challengers.

Weiner Says Wife Will Have Role in Clinton Campaign

August 13, 2013 at 7:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Anthony Weiner said his wife Huma Abedin would have a role in a 2016 Hillary Clinton presidential bid, but acknowledged that his sexting scandals had hurt his spouse “personally” and “professionally,” The Hill reports.

Asked if he knew what role Abedin would play in a possible Clinton campaign, Weiner replied “I do…  I’m not telling you,”

New Jersey Votes Today

August 13, 2013 at 7:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A special U.S. Senate primary will be held in New Jersey today, the Newark Star Ledger reports.

“Unfortunately, the exercise in democracy is competing with family vacations, the rhythm of the surf, the smell of burgers on the grill and summer blockbusters on the big screen.”

“And, experts say, the date chosen by Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Sen. Frank Lautenberg, a Democrat, is likely to produce one of the lowest voter turnouts the state has ever seen — potentially rivaling the 2006 Senate primaries, when just 8.4 percent of registered voters made it to the polls.”

North Carolina Tightens Voting Laws

August 13, 2013 at 6:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) “signed into law a bill requiring voters to produce a photo ID when they go to the polls, and it was immediately met with legal challenges in federal court questioning its constitutionality,” the Raleigh News and Observer reports.

“The new law brings sweeping changes to the state’s election process by reducing the early-voting period by a week, abolishing same-day voter registration and ending straight-party voting.”

Ari Berman takes a look at the lawsuits filed against the new law.

Rick Hasen: “The bottom line is that the way to fight much of North Carolina’s strict law is not legally but politically. And that’s part of the impetus for the lawsuits as well. Even if they are not wholly successful, they will keep the issue in the news. Without a compelling anti-fraud, efficiency, or voter confidence story to tell about this set of draconian laws, and with statistics showing that some of the provisions here could well impact minority voters, defenders of this law could well see their own backlash.”

Gansler Says Rival Relying on Race to Prevail

August 13, 2013 at 5:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler (D) told a group of campaign volunteers last month that Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown (D), his chief Democratic rival for governor, has a thin record of accomplishment and is trying to rely on his race to get elected next year, the Washington Post reports.

Said Gansler: “I mean, right now his campaign slogan is, ‘Vote for me, I want to be the first African American governor of Maryland.’ That’s a laudable goal, but you need a second sentence: ‘Because here’s what I’ve done, and here’s why I’ve done it.'”

Australian Politican Makes Amusing Gaffe

August 12, 2013 at 10:06 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In a gaffe that has attracted plenty of media attention in the heat of Australia’s election campaign, opposition leader Tony Abbott told a gathering of conservative party faithful on Monday that no one is “the suppository of all wisdom,” the AP reports.

“Abbott, a Rhodes scholar, apparently meant to say ‘repository’ — a storage place — rather than a medication inserted in the rectum.”

Establishment Pushes Back on the Tea Party

August 12, 2013 at 9:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Midway between the 2012 and 2014 election campaigns, moderate Republican conservatives are beginning to foment a revolt of their own — a backlash to anti-spending tea party shrillness as budget cuts begin to significantly shrink defense and domestic programs,” the AP reports.

“Tea party forces may have dominated the House GOP’s approach to the budget so far, but pragmatists in the party have served notice they won’t stand idly by for indiscriminate spending cuts to politically popular community development grants, education programs and even Amtrak.”

It’s Very, Very Early

August 12, 2013 at 9:53 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “After all, at this point in the 2008 cycle — so in Aug. 2005 — no one viewed Barack Obama as an ’08 presidential contender (in fact, he had served just seven months in the U.S. Senate). Also at this point in the ’08 cycle, Hillary Clinton was seen as the overwhelming favorite on the Democratic side. (How did that turn out?) Back then, George Allen (R-VA) was considered at the least the co-frontrunner for the GOP nomination. (He lost his bid for re-election a year later.) And at this point in the 2008 cycle, George W. Bush had yet to see his poll numbers nosedive (Hurricane Katrina hit the U.S. on Aug. 29, 2005). Just something for everyone to consider with more than three years until Election Day 2016…”

Lawmaker Says House GOP Could Impeach Obama

August 12, 2013 at 6:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-TX) told constituents that Republicans have the votes in the House to impeach President Obama, TPM reports.

Said Farenthold: “I’ll give you a real frank answer about that, if we were to impeach the President tomorrow, you could probably get the votes in the House of Representatives to do it. But it would go to the Senate and he wouldn’t be convicted.”

Filner Activity Probed at a Local Hotel

August 12, 2013 at 6:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

As federal, state and local officials investigate San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, KGTV has learned that “members of the mayor’s security detail have provided information to authorities, regarding the mayor taking different women to a popular downtown San Diego hotel.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

“I thank God every night in my nightly prayers for giving me the insight to decide in 2006 not to seek reelection.”

— Ex-Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY), quoted by National Journal Daily.

Bonus Quote of the Day

August 12, 2013 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Most of the people I meet won’t walk away and say, ‘Wow, he put me to sleep.’ Almost nobody says that. People are still awake when I’m talking to them.”

— New York City mayoral candidate Bill Thompson (D), quoted by the New York Times, countering the perception that he’s boring.

GOP Primary Fights Give Democrats a Chance

August 12, 2013 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Kentucky, Wyoming and South Carolina should have been easy wins for incumbent Republicans trying to regain the U.S. Senate majority in 2014. Instead, the primary challenges they face threaten to drain resources, sharpen campaign trail rhetoric and build division for a party struggling to find its way after a demoralizing 2012 election,” Bloomberg reports.

“In Georgia, the Republican primary is jammed with seven candidates, pitting one wing of the party against the other — as is the case in the other states. Meanwhile, Democrats are unifying behind one candidate.”

“The infighting has raised Democratic expectations that they can keep control of the chamber and perhaps capture seats in Republican-leaning states. They did that in Indiana and Missouri in 2012 against inexperienced candidates backed by the small-government Tea Party branch of the party.”
