Republicans Worry Sanford Could Blow Race

April 3, 2013 at 9:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Many Republicans “privately concede” former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R), who easily won a runoff last night, could hand a safe Republican House seat to Elizabeth Colbert Busch (D), Politico reports.

“Fellow GOP pols don’t like him. Neither do female voters. His campaign is largely an exercise in seeking forgiveness for his transgressions four years ago — a defensive crouch that makes it tricky to take the fight to Colbert Busch, the sister of late-night comedian Stephen Colbert.”

Charleston Post and Courier:
“The political race many had anticipated would unfold in the 1st
Congressional District — the national comedian’s sister versus the
once-disgraced governor angling for a comeback — is finally here.”

It’s worth noting that Public Policy Polling, which nailed the runoff result, found Colbert Busch leading Sanford by two points.

Lawmakers Want State Religion in North Carolina

April 3, 2013 at 9:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Republican lawmakers in North Carolina introduced a bill to allow the state “to declare an official religion, in violation of the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Bill of Rights, and seeks to nullify any federal ruling against Christian prayer by public bodies statewide,” WRAL-TV reports.

Republicans Increasingly Isolated on Major Issues

April 3, 2013 at 9:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Greg Sargent: “One thing that remains striking about our politics right now is the degree to which public opinion among Republicans is increasingly isolated and drifting away from the rest of the electorate. You see this on pretty much every major issue facing the country.”

“All of which is to say that there seems to be little incentive for GOP
politicians, particularly ones who are insulated from national opinion
in safe districts with a lot of GOP base voters, to compromise with
Obama or Democrats.”

Republicans Don’t Support Path to Citizenship

April 3, 2013 at 8:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds 57% support a path to citizenship for undocumented workers, but that number is just 35% among self-identified Republicans — “evidence of the political peril for Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and other GOP politicians involved in the negotiations on a compromise immigration bill.”

Among self-described “conservative Republicans,” the numbers are even more negative, with just 30% supporting the idea.

At the same time, Democratic support is reaching new highs — moving up to 73% from 68% in February — and 84% of self-identified liberal Democrats support providing a path for undocumented workers to gain legal status.

Quote of the Day

April 3, 2013 at 8:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Well, you know, at the end of the day, Stephen Colbert’s a very popular, you know, well-regarded comedian, but at the end of the day he’s not on the ticket.”

— Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R), interviewed on Morning Joe, saying the only thing voters know about his opponent, Elizabeth Colbert Busch (D), is that she is the sister of the late-night comedian.

Public Still Supports Gun Control

April 3, 2013 at 8:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “In the past few weeks, two narratives have surfaced in the gun debate. One, it’s going to be difficult for Congress to pass any major gun-control legislation this year. And two, public opinion for gun-control measures is beginning to slip months after the Newtown, CT shooting tragedy. The first narrative is definitely true. The second? Not according to a brand-new Morning Joe/Marist poll. Six in 10 Americans believe that the laws covering gun sales should be stricter. That figure is virtually unchanged from the 61% who backed stricter gun laws when a NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll asked the same question in February, even though at least one other national survey has found waning support for gun-control laws after Newtown. What’s more, the Morning Joe/Marist survey finds that a whopping 87% of Americans support background checks for private gun sales and sales at gun shows, and 59% favor legislation that would ban the sale of assault weapons.”

Key Banking Regulators Head Back to Private Sector

April 3, 2013 at 8:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

National Journal: “As head of the Securities and Exchange Commission for the past four years, Mary Schapiro failed to win a major civil action against any Wall Street executive connected to what may be the worst financial fraud in history, the subprime-mortgage scam that led to the 2008 crash. As head of the Justice Department’s criminal division for the past four years, Lanny Breuer failed to accomplish the same with criminal action. And now both are headed back over to the other side: deep-pocketed firms that earn their keep largely from Wall Street.”

The Most Boneheaded Scheme Ever?

April 3, 2013 at 7:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Juan Gonzalez: “New York has produced some of the most crooked politicians in the nation’s history. This was, after all, the city of Boss Tweed, Jimmy Walker, Mario Biaggi and Meade Esposito. But this latest political scandal has to be the dumbest, most delusional scheme ever concocted.”

Presidents Club Reunites

On April 25, President Obama will be united with his four living predecessors in Dallas for the opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Center at Southern Methodist University, Time reports.

Clinton Returns to Public Stage

April 3, 2013 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton returned to the public stage last night “for the opening scene in what many expect to be a carefully plotted performance concluding with another presidential try,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“The high-profile venue: the Kennedy Center in the nation’s capital. Several dozen mostly student-age supporters of a Clinton presidential run rallied outside, brandishing blue-and-white ‘I’m Ready for Hillary’ placards. But the event inside was strictly nonpartisan: an awards gala for an international women’s rights organization that Clinton had helped create.”

New York Times:
“It was an evening without overt politics and yet Mrs. Clinton’s
appearance drew attention as she enters a period of deciding whether to
run for president again in 2016.”

The Evolving Flip-Flopper

April 3, 2013 at 7:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Howard Kurtz: “Once it was all so blatant. Some calculating pol, realizing that his position had become unpopular or untenable, would execute a backflip off the high board. The press would blow the whistle on this naked opportunism, and the flip-flop police would beat him senseless.”

“Now the slippery officeholders and aspirants simply announce that they are ‘evolving.’ I mean, who could be against that?”

“Evolving suggests a certain intellectual process as the person in question grapples with new evidence. It is part of a continuing quest to sort through the nuances and reach a modern conclusion in these turbulent times. It is practically professorial rather than a shameful cave-in.”

Americans Like Republicans Less Than Democrats

April 3, 2013 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Quinnipiac poll finds the Democratic Party is less disliked than the GOP: the Democrats get a negative 38% to 44% percent favorability, compared to a negative 28% to 52% for the Republicans.

Voters also give Republicans in Congress a negative 19% to 71% job approval, compared to a negative 34% to 59% for the Democrats in Congress.

Said pollster Peter Brown: “The Republican brand is essentially in the toilet these days, but it’s worth remembering the Democrats faced a similar situation in the late 1980s and got their house in order and returned to power in short order.”

Obama Seeks to Shift Conservative Tilt of Court

April 3, 2013 at 6:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Obama “has pressed senators from both parties in recent weeks to confirm a new federal judge for one of the country’s most powerful courts, using an aggressive strategy to campaign for a judicial nominee whom White House officials consider a potentially crucial figure in boosting the president’s second-term agenda,” the Washington Post reports.

“The effort reflects a new White House effort to tilt in its favor the conservative-dominated U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, which is one notch below the Supreme Court and considers many challenges to executive actions.”

Lawmaker Links Gun Control to Bestiality

April 2, 2013 at 9:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) linked his opposition to any gun control legislation to gay marriage and bestiality on a conference call, a recording of which was obtained by Right Wing Watch.

Said Gohmert: “In fact, I had this discussion with some wonderful, caring Democrats earlier this week on the issue of, well, they said “surely you could agree to limit the number of rounds in a magazine, couldn’t you? How would that be problematic?”

“And I pointed out, well, once you make it ten, then why would you draw the line at ten? What’s wrong with nine? Or eleven? And the problem is once you draw that limit ; it’s kind of like marriage when you say it’s not a man and a woman any more, then why not have three men and one woman, or four women and one man, or why not somebody has a love for an animal?”

Sanford Wins Runoff

April 2, 2013 at 8:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) “has cleared another hurdle in his bid for a political comeback, defeating a former county council member to win the GOP nomination for a vacant U.S. House seat,” the AP reports.

Roll Call: “It is unclear how difficult the path ahead will be for Sanford in the general election. Some South Carolina Republicans insist that this is a solidly conservative district and that the idea of a Democratic winner is unfathomable.”

But the Democratic nominee, Elizabeth Colbert Busch (D), released an internal poll that showed she had a narrow lead over Sanford, though Stu Rothenberg is skeptical.

Obama Will Not Endorse in Los Angeles Mayoral Race

April 2, 2013 at 3:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Obama “doesn’t plan to weigh in on the Los Angeles mayoral race because it pits two Democrats against each other,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“The news is a blow for Eric Garcetti, who has emphasized his ties to Obama during his candidacy. Garcetti recently sent out mailers to black voters featuring a picture of himself with Obama.”

Bill Clinton endorsed rival Wendy Greuel last month.

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

April 2, 2013 at 3:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“That’s politics, that’s politics. Not about whether or will, it’s about how much, and that’s our politicians in New York, they’re all like that. And they get like that because of the drive that the money does for everything else.”

— New York City Councilman Daniel Halloran (R), quoted by the New York Times, in a complaint charging him with an attempt to rig the mayoral election.
