Movement to Abandon Immigration Reform Grows

July 2, 2013 at 10:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“If the 2012 election was a wakeup call for Republicans to address their relationship to Latino voters, the 2013 immigration debate is starting to resemble a chloroform-soaked rag,” Benjy Sarlin reports.

“After November’s stunning loss, an array of influential Republicans argued that immigration reform was the party’s best chance to claim Latino voters before they become permanent Democrats. But in a mere eight months, a counter-narrative has taken hold in conservative circles, nurtured by a shrewd group of anti-immigration lobbyists and Tea Party enthusiasts. The new argument sees immigration reform at best as a divisive distraction from the GOP’s real problem of countering ‘white flight’ from the polls. At worst, they view it as an electoral apocalypse, a seventh seal behind which lies an unbroken line of future Democratic presidents.”

Snowden Request Denied by 8 Countries

July 2, 2013 at 9:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gawker: “We still don’t know where NSA leaker Edward Snowden, still technically ‘in transit’ in Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, will end up next. But now that more than a third of the countries from which he’s applied for asylum have said ‘no,’ we can get a good sense of where he’s not going.”

The Week: Snowden’s dwindling options.

North Carolina is the New Wisconsin

July 2, 2013 at 9:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Graham
says North Carolina has replaced Wisconsin as the epicenter for GOP activism.

“Unlike the Madison contretemps, which centered around one
major issue — Gov. Scott Walker’s drive to strip public employees of
collective-bargaining rights, and protestors push to stop him — the
battle in North Carolina is more of a multifront war featuring a large
number of skirmishes.”

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times notes North Carolina is moving to end early voting.

Quote of the Day

July 2, 2013 at 9:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Accepting the invitation from countless Washington liberals to become President Obama’s Kentucky candidate was a courageous decision by Alison Lundergan Grimes and I look forward to a respectful exchange of ideas.”

— Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), quoted by ABC News, after drawing a Democratic challenger to his re-election bid.

Branstad Ramps Up Re-Election Campaign

July 2, 2013 at 9:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R) and his team “are hiring campaign staff, opening a campaign headquarters and fundraising in earnest,” the Des Moines Register reports.

“It’s the unofficial flipping of the switch, and it means ‘game on’ for 2014 – even though the Republican governor says he won’t publicly state for certain until next year whether or not he’s seeking re-election.”

Said Branstad adviser Doug Gross: “It will be easier for the Cubs to win the World Series than for a Democrat to beat Branstad. That being said, I expect him to run like he is 20 points behind.”

July 2, 2013 at 9:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell (R) “repeatedly used state assets for personal and political purposes, including directing state employees to work at private and political events, according to new allegations from McDonnell’s former chef,” the Washington Post reports.

The allegations come in court documents filed as Todd Schneider “defends himself against charges that he embezzled food from the governor’s mansion while working as the executive chef from 2010 to 2012.”

Giffords Keeps Pushing for Gun Sale Background Checks

July 2, 2013 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Rep. Gabielle Giffords (D-AZ) has an op-ed in USA Today:

“We own guns, we use them and we treat them with great care. But when children are gunned down in their classrooms, when families are slaughtered at a movie theater, when a little girl dreaming of running for office is shot dead standing next to me in a grocery store parking lot, we have to admit what we’re doing is not enough. We’ve all got to do more to reduce gun violence.”

Romney Voted Against Running in Family Poll

July 2, 2013 at 7:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Huffington Post: “Over the Christmas break of 2010, Mitt Romney and his family took an internal poll on whether he should run for president once more. Twelve family members cast ballots. Ten said no. One of the 10 was Mitt Romney himself.”

“The doubts that the former Massachusetts governor harbored before ultimately launching his second unsuccessful bid for the presidency are one of several attention-grabbing details in Collision 2012, the newest book on the 2012 campaign.”

It’s a must-read book.

Mubarak Says Protests Dwarfed Those That Toppled Him

July 2, 2013 at 7:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak has watched the demonstrations demanding that President Mohamed Morsi stand down, the Egypt Independent reports.

“The imprisoned dictator reportedly expressed astonishment at the number of protesters on the streets of Cairo, commenting that crowds dwarfed those that rose up against him in January 2011.”

What if Hillary Clinton Doesn’t Run?

July 2, 2013 at 5:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Democrats openly describe their surprise at seeing such consensus around a candidate so early. The hope of retaining the White House in an open-seat election is very real — and the letdown that will set in among Democratic activists and operatives will be very deep if Clinton takes a pass on a campaign, as she may well do.”

“She has said she has yet to make up her mind, but few in the party believe that. The Clintons’ ambition and the chance to make history as the first female president, they figure, will overpower any reticence about another grueling campaign or spending her golden years carrying the burdens of the world’s weightiest job.”

“But if they’re wrong, there is no obvious replacement. And the party would be looking at a mad scramble to fill the Clinton void.”

GOP Groups Give Cover for Lawmakers on Immigration

July 2, 2013 at 5:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Many of the most powerful and well-financed forces in the Republican party are moving to provide cover for GOP lawmakers who are pushing to overhaul the nation’s immigration system, the New York Times reports.

“Their message: if we ever want to take back the White House, we have to stop devouring our own.”

“As the party assesses its chances for the 2016 presidential campaign, many Republican strategists believe that they need as robust a primary field as possible, with more than just one or two viable potential contenders.”

Ecuador Not Helping Snowden

July 1, 2013 at 8:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ecuador President Rafael Correa says his country “is not considering Edward Snowden’s asylum request and never intended to facilitate his flight from Hong Kong,” the Guardian reports.

He said Snowden “was Russia’s responsibility and would have to reach Ecuadorean territory before the country would consider any asylum request.”

Snowden Accuses Obama of ‘Political Aggression’

July 1, 2013 at 7:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Edward Snowden, in his first public message since arriving at Moscow’s
Sheremetyevo International Airport eight days ago, has issued a
statement accusing President Obama of deploying “the old, bad tools of
political aggression” and “using citizenship as a weapon” in order to
silence him, the Washington Post reports.

He also describes the Obama administration as “afraid of an
informed, angry public demanding the constitutional government it was
promised — and it should be.”

Udall’s Brother Missing After Hike

July 1, 2013 at 6:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Mark Udall’s (D-CO) brother, James Udall, “is missing after going on a solo hike in Wyoming,” Politico reports.

“The 61-year-old, who goes by Randy, was trekking in the Wind River Range and was supposed to come out of the mountains last Wednesday but never did. An experienced hiker, this wasn’t the first time James Udall had gone solo into those mountains.”

Grimes Has an Uphill Fight

July 1, 2013 at 5:53 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Harry Enten looks at the challenge facing Alison Lundergan Grimes (D) as she attempts to unseat Sen. Mitch McConnell (R).

“Since 1982, when the new wave of polarization took hold, there have been eight midterm elections. These make for some daunting numbers for Grimes, on three counts: 1). McConnell is running when the other party controls the White House. The opposition party successfully defended 18 of 19 seats in 1982; 11 of 12 in 1986; 17 of 17 in 1990; 13 of 13 in 1994; 13 of 16 in 1998; 11 of 14 in 2002; 16 for 16 in 2006; and 18 for 18 in 2010. That’s just eight out of 125 races, or 6%, when a seat has flipped to the White House party in a midterm. Most of those were when the president had an approval rating well into the 60s. Obama’s approval rating right now is in the mid 40s.”

The Fix: “This will be the nastiest race in the country.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

July 1, 2013 at 2:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“If life ends when heart stops, then please explain Dick Cheney.”

— Texas state Rep. Gene Wu (D), in a tweet he later deleted as a “mistake.”

Kentucky Secretary Of State Alison Lundergan Grimes (D) will run against Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in next year’s U.S. Senate election, WLEX-TV reports.

“Grimes is thought to be the Democrats’ best hope of unseating McConnell, the Senate Republican Leader. Grimes had been considering whether to throw her hat into the race for the past several months.”

Ryan Alessi of c|n2 reports Grimes told supporters that she intends to run for U.S. Senate.

Update: The Lexington Herald Leader has coverage of her announcement.
