The GOP’s Tarnished Golden Boys

January 11, 2014 at 10:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For a while, Chris Christie and Bob McDonnell were untouchable,” Politico reports.

“The first major Republicans elected after the 2008 Obama landslide, the tough-as-nails Garden Stater and the straight-edged Virginian heralded the conservative resurgence in 2010 and pointed the way toward sweeping victories for small-government candidates on the state level. A year ago, both seemed like plausible and even probable 2016 presidential candidates, two representatives of a fresher GOP, anchored in fiscal discipline, support for states’ rights and opposition to public labor.”

“Now, clouds hang over both the GOP golden boys of 2009.”

The State of the Two Parties

We had two very interesting conversations this week which shed light on what Democrats and Republicans need to do to prepare themselves for the 2014 and 2016 elections.

Democratic strategist Joe Trippi on the Democrats:

Former Bush speechwriter David Frum on the Republicans:

“Three weeks after an ethics panel ruled he misspent thousands in taxpayer funds and violated nearly a dozen state laws, Arkansas Lt. Gov. Mark Darr (R) has resigned effective Feb. 1,” the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports.

“Several Democratic and Republican state legislators have said they would pursue the impeachment process if Darr didn’t step down by the Feb. 10 start of the fiscal session.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

January 10, 2014 at 7:54 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I don’t know who e-mailed whom, who works for whom. I have been in traffic before and I know how angry I am, and I’m always wondering, who did this.”

– Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), quoted by CNN, commenting on the bridge scandal swirling around Gov. Chris Christie (R).

Bonus Quote of the Day

January 10, 2014 at 6:08 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I pray that no life has been lost or trip of a hospital- or hospice-bound patient delayed.”

— Port Authority Executive Director Patrick Foye, quoted by CNN in newly-released documents, overriding the decision made by aides officials loyal to Chris Christie to close lanes on the George Washington Bridge last September.

Bridge Documents Show Effort to Hide Political Motives

January 10, 2014 at 5:44 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Newly-released documents show that officials loyal to Gov. Chris Christie (R) “went to elaborate means to make it appear that the September closing of lanes leading to the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, N.J., was part of a traffic study, even though their private communications suggest the move was purely political,” the New York Times reports.

“The documents also show a concerted effort to keep their true motivation hidden, including the insistence by one official of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in an email that communications about the matter should not be conducted by email or discussed publicly.”

Jolly Leading in Florida Special Election GOP Primary

January 10, 2014 at 3:41 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Two new polls show David Jolly (R) leading his GOP rivals in Tuesday’s primary to replace the late Rep. Bill Young (R).

A Gravis Marketing survey finds Jolly with a 6-point lead over Kathleen Peters (R), 34% to 28%.

A St. Pete Polls survey finds Jolly with an 11-point lead over Peters, 39% to 28%.

Christie Tried to Slow Down Investigation

January 10, 2014 at 1:48 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Flashback to December 12, 2013 in the Wall Street Journal:

“Mr. Christie, a Republican, complained in a private phone call to Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat, that Patrick Foye, the executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, was pressing too hard to get to the bottom of why the number of toll lanes onto the bridge from Fort Lee, N.J. was cut from three to one in early September, according to this person. The lane closures occurred without notice to local authorities, officials have said, and snarled traffic for a week in the small borough on the Hudson River bluffs.”

Granholm to Join Super PAC Backing Hillary Clinton

January 10, 2014 at 12:13 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Jim Messina, former campaign manager to President Obama, will soon have company at the helm of Priorities USA Action, the big-money super PAC set to support Hillary Clinton should she run for president in 2016,” Ruby Cramer reports.

“Jennifer Granholm, the former two-term governor of Michigan and one of the Democratic Party’s most spirited principals, is well into talks to join Messina as co-chair of the group’s board of directors.”

Republicans and the Empathy Gap

January 10, 2014 at 10:15 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Charlie Cook: “In the last election, when people
were asked to choose which quality mattered the most in deciding how
they voted for president, the top choice was ‘has a vision for the
future’ at 29 percent, followed by ‘shares my values’ at 27 percent.
Coming in third was ‘cares about people like me’ at 21 percent, and, in
fourth place, ‘is a strong leader’ at 18 percent. Romney scored higher
on three out of four of these qualities. Those choosing ‘shares my
values’ voted 55 percent for Romney and 42 percent for Obama. Those who
picked ‘is a strong leader’ as a key quality in their president sided
for Romney, 61 percent to 38 percent. Those who said ‘has a vision for
the future’ went 54 percent for Romney, 45 percent for Obama.”

“Looking at
these numbers, one might assume Romney won the election. However, among
the one in five voters for whom ‘cares about people like me’ was most
important, Obama won 81 percent to 18 percent. That is a jaw-dropping
finding as Republicans search for the answer to the question, ‘Why did
we lose?’ Republicans need to think about these results as they decide
how to position their party for 2014 and 2016, lest they watch this
empathy gap cost them another winnable election.”

Quote of the Day

January 10, 2014 at 9:28 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It seems to me that this whole bridge thing reinforces a narrative that’s troublesome about the guy, he’s kind of a bully.”

— Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), quoted by NBC News, commenting on the scandal enveloping Gov. Chris Christie (R).

Christie’s Enemies Ready to Pounce

January 10, 2014 at 9:26 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “Christie faces a serious problem that goes well beyond whether anyone contradicts the story and timeline he laid out on Thursday: He has enemies, both Democratic and Republican ones, who are sharpening their knives. On the Democratic side, state lawmakers are holding hearings and investigations on the issue (example: Christie aide David Wildstein pleading the 5th yesterday), and that won’t stop anytime soon. Just as Darrell Issa and House Republicans hounded the Obama administration last year with subpoenas, leaks, and numerous hearings, New Jersey Democrats have the ability to make life miserable for Christie in 2014. But it’s not only Democrats. Some Republicans — potential 2016 rivals, conservatives upset by his embrace of President Obama in 2012, or any other enemies he’s made along the way – have the ability to score points with this scandal.”

The Week: Who would replace Christie as the GOP establishment 2016 frontrunner?

An Alternate Theory of the Christie Scandal

Reid’s Power Play Rankles Republicans

January 10, 2014 at 7:35 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“With his strong-armed change to the filibuster rule and an iron-fisted control of the Senate floor, Senator Harry Reid has engaged in the greatest consolidation of congressional power since Newt Gingrich ruled the House, unleashing a bitterness that may derail efforts to extend unemployment insurance,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Reid’s brutish style matters beyond the marbled chamber of the Senate. Senate legislation has increasingly turned into a battle over amendments and Mr. Reid’s uncompromising control over the process. The six Republicans who voted to take up the unemployment bill on Tuesday expected at least to be allowed votes on their amendments to shape the legislation. Instead, Mr. Reid dismissed all Republican proposals as unacceptable and then proposed his own new unemployment deal.”

French President Threatens to Sue Over Affair Allegations

January 10, 2014 at 7:31 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

French President Francois Hollande “says he is considering suing a magazine after it claimed he was having an affair with an actress,” the BBC reports.

Hollande said the report was an “attack on the right to privacy”, but he did not deny the allegation.

Closer ran the story and features seven pages of photos of actress Julie Gayet.

Illinois Republican Flip-Flop-Flips

January 10, 2014 at 7:25 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Chicago Sun Times: “First, Bruce Rauner (R) seemed to say he favored cutting the state’s $8.25-an-hour minimum wage. Then, he retreated from those ‘flippant’ remarks made in December and said this week he favors increasing pay for Illinois’ poorest workers to as much as $10 an hour.”

“On Thursday came yet another twist in the Republican gubernatorial candidate’s confusing and evolving stance on a vital issue affecting 1.1 million Illinois workers: a September video in which Rauner said he ‘adamantly, adamantly’ opposes raising the minimum wage.”

Evaluating Christie’s Damage Control

January 10, 2014 at 7:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gov. Chris Christie (R) “did about as well as he could, given the circumstances. All he can do now is wait, and hope it passes without many more revelations,” Politico reports.

“That was the sentiment coming from people who wanted to offer support to the Republican governor of New Jersey, a man whose sky-high political stock took a hit in the last week over a bizarre, seemingly picayune story about closed traffic lanes on a bridge.”

The Hill: “GOP strategists and donors praised the way Christie took back control of the story, saying the press conference was exactly the right first step in dealing with a scandal that threatens to torpedo his 2016 hopes. But while Christie might have stopped the bleeding, observers say the extent to which he contains the political damage depends on what other revelations emerge.”

Daily Beast: Seven reasons Christie isn’t toast.

The Guardian compressed Christie’s two hour press conference to just three minutes.
