Thom Tillis Tells Todd Blanche to Meet with Epstein Victims

July 16, 2026 at 12:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Thom Tillis said Thursday his vote to confirm attorney general nominee Todd Blanche is contingent on Blanche meeting with victims of the late convicted sex offender Jeffery Epstein,” Politico reports.

”The North Carolina Republican’s new demand creates yet another hurdle for Blanche’s confirmation, which will fail to advance to the Senate floor if one Republican on the Judiciary Committee defects — assuming all Democrats on the panel oppose him. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) is also undecided.”

USA Today: GOP senator says he won’t vote for Todd Blanche until he meets with Epstein accusers.

White House Staffer Wagered On Trump’s Remarks

July 16, 2026 at 12:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The federal agency that regulates prediction markets is investigating President Donald Trump’s longtime teleprompter operator for potential insider trading,” CNN reports.

“The sources said White House employee Gabriel Perez made trades on the prediction site Kalshi that were flagged for possible insider activity. The trades were on ‘mention markets,’ where users can bet on which words and phrases that public figures, including Trump, will say at speeches and events.”

Reflecting Pool Peeling Likely Caused by Application Flaws

July 16, 2026 at 12:53 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The lining of the Lincoln Memorial’s Reflecting Pool peeled away in at least seven places along seams that were created when the material was applied in large rectangular sections, indicating likely problems in how it was installed, according to an analysis of visuals and interviews with experts,” the Washington Post reports.

”President Donald Trump has repeatedly said vandals are to blame for the damage that appeared just two weeks after the $14 million renovation was completed in early June.”

Chevron Will Explore Creating Strait of Hormuz Alternative

July 16, 2026 at 12:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Chevron intends to sign preliminary deals Friday to invest in two Iraqi oil fields and will join a consortium of investors exploring the construction of a pipeline to connect Iraq’s oil patch with the Syrian coast,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Iraq and other Middle East oil producers are scrambling for alternatives to the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran has sought to shut down and put it under its control, triggering a U.S. military response. About 20% of the world’s oil transited the waterway before the Iran war began.”

Democratic States Get Less Disaster Relief

July 16, 2026 at 12:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When major disasters strike, Americans are routinely waiting weeks — or even months — to receive presidential approval for aid. And if they live in a state that didn’t support President Donald Trump, chances are greater that aid will be denied,” the AP reports.

“Since taking office last year, Trump has approved about 65 requests for major disaster declarations and denied more than two dozen others from states, tribes or territories seeking federal financial assistance following hurricanes, tornadoes, storms, floods and fires.”

Iran and Ukraine Highlight Limits of Air Campaigns

July 16, 2026 at 12:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Like many leaders before them, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are coming face-to-face with the limits of massive airpower to achieve strategic victory,” Bloomberg reports.

“Trump is again threatening to step up the intensity of airstrikes against Iran, even though thousands of previous attacks since late February failed to dislodge the government in Tehran, eliminate its missile threat or end its stranglehold over the Strait of Hormuz.”

“Ukraine offers a related lesson. In a conflict where the front lines are largely static and both sides have launched massive waves of long-range strikes with drones and missiles, whoever has the stoutest air defenses may have a decisive advantage.”

Trump Weighs $100K Bond for Green Card Seekers

July 16, 2026 at 11:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration is considering placing a bond of $100,000 on some green-card seekers applying at U.S. consulates abroad, according to people familiar with the plans,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The State Department is developing the proposal as part of the Trump administration’s continuing efforts to limit immigration by foreigners of limited means, and ensure that any immigrants who do move to the U.S. can support themselves.”

Democrats Call Truce in Maine

July 16, 2026 at 11:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Democrats are adopting a new strategy in their Maine Senate primary: staying all the way out of it,” Semafor reports.

“Chief among them is Bernie Sanders, who propelled Graham Platner’s rise and supported the gubernatorial bid of Troy Jackson. Though Jackson is seeking the progressive mantle in the race to replace Platner on the ballot, the Vermont independent is done with trying to be a Pine Tree State kingmaker.”

Said Sanders: “It’s an unprecedented moment. The people of Maine should work it out themselves. Right now it’s best that the people of Maine make their own decisions without outside influence.”

Ari Emanuel’s Media Empire Could Boost Rahm in 2028

July 16, 2026 at 11:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “As a top Hollywood superagent, Ari Emanuel spent decades amassing a client list chock-full of silver screen icons. These days, his sprawling sports and entertainment empire has brought him closer to the podcasters, peptide-takers and proteinmaxxers who occupy a significant mindshare of some of America’s most valuable and persuadable voters: independent young men.”

“Emanuel’s clients and colleagues include the U.F.C. ringleader Dana White, the podcaster and U.F.C. commentator Joe Rogan, the sports talking head Pat McAfee and the sports and political pundit Stephen A. Smith. Emanuel also maintains a close relationship with Elon Musk, even attending the SpaceX founder’s court battle against OpenAI this year.”

“The Emanuel-sphere is vast. And, come 2028, it could prove particularly beneficial to one potential presidential candidate: Ari’s brother Rahm.”

Trump Risks Another American ‘Forever War’ in Iran

July 16, 2026 at 10:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“No one starts a war expecting it to last forever,” the New York Times reports.

“Yet, since Vietnam, American presidents have repeatedly gotten into conflicts that seem like they could last forever, at least until the next president — or the one after that — decides that the expense and political pain are not worth it, declares victory and goes home.”

“On Iran, President Trump may have fallen into the same trap.”

United States of Disbelief

July 16, 2026 at 9:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Atlantic: “The spread of conspiracy theories about Senators Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell underscores the lack of trust in American society.”

White House Moves to Fence Off Lafayette Square

July 16, 2026 at 9:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal design panel on Thursday will consider the Trump administration’s plan to add a permanent fence around Lafayette Square Park, a public space next to the White House that is frequently the site of protests,” the New York Times reports.

“The move comes as President Trump and the Secret Service say that they are concerned about the security of the White House during protests. The administration’s submission to the panel, the Commission of Fine Arts, includes photos of pro-Gaza graffiti left in the park, and of standoffs between police officers and protesters.”

Trump Learned of ICE Halt From Cable News

July 16, 2026 at 8:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin decided to halt most vehicle stops by federal immigration officials, he didn’t have a chance to brief President Trump before news of the decision started to leak,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Mullin had made the decision Monday evening with acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Dave Venturella, following the fatal shootings of two immigrants in the span of a week that prompted public outrage…”

“But no one had briefed Trump on the decision, the people said. He only caught wind of it from critical coverage on cable TV and furious outside allies, who took to social media to register their disapproval.”

Controlling Hormuz Would Take More U.S. Troops

July 16, 2026 at 8:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“At the start of this week, President Trump asserted that the Strait of Hormuz was open and under U.S. control. But by Wednesday, as the U.S. and Iran fought it out over the vital waterway, ship tracker Kpler was saying traffic had dropped as the risk to transits deepened,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The result hammered home what many analysts and former military officers have long said: Securing the strait and convincing shippers that it is safe to cross without Iran’s consent would likely take a risky naval-escort mission or a vast and costly ground operation in southern Iran. Either would require a major commitment of U.S. personnel.”

Bloomberg: Iran-U.S. skirmishes worsen as Hormuz shipping traffic dwindles.

Russia’s Richest Move Billions Abroad

July 16, 2026 at 8:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Several of Russia’s richest people including some close to President Vladimir Putin have moved billions of dollars abroad in the past year after growing concerned about the country’s economy and the government budget,” Bloomberg reports.

Trump Deportation Push Falters After Fatal ICE Encounters

July 16, 2026 at 7:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lifted a temporary pause on vehicle stops after President Donald Trump touted the controversial tactic as an essential enforcement tool, a White House official said Wednesday,” the Washington Post reports.

“ICE halted vehicle stops after officers fatally shot two people in less than a week during encounters involving vehicles. Within days, the short-lived policy had been ended, the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the internal policy change.”

“The latest reversal underscored the White House’s bind between delivering on a core campaign promise for mass deportations and the deadly consequences of its enforcement operations, repeating a cycle of escalating arrests and recoiling from the political fallout.”

New York Times: Trump pressures ICE to resume traffic stops after agency pulls back.

DNC Officers Asked to Sign NDAs

July 16, 2026 at 7:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Democratic National Committee asked its leadership team to sign non-disclosure agreements before a recent meeting about the party’s finances,” Axios reports.

“The move — a break from past practice for such officers — underscored DNC chair Ken Martin’s sensitivity about the party’s money woes and the persistent criticism about his leadership.”

Scott Suggests Graham’s Sister Could Seek Seat

July 16, 2026 at 7:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“With the November race to succeed Lindsey Graham in the Senate still wide-open, Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina suggested the late senator’s interim replacement — his sister, Darline Graham — could be one candidate,” CBS News reports.

Said Scott: “Darline has so far been off to a remarkable start. Why not her?”

Fox News: Lindsey Graham’s final act reverberates in Senate as sister is urged to “keep pedaling.”
