Behind Obama’s About-Face on Syria

June 15, 2013 at 3:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “The Obama administration tied its dramatic shift in favor of arming Syria’s rebels to findings that chemical weapons had been used in the civil war–but the decision, according to people familiar with it, was the product of two months of increasingly unsettling assessments about the war that convinced the president to do something he had previously argued would be a mistake.”

“It was more than a week ago, according to American officials, that U.S. intelligence agencies reached their conclusion that 100 to 150 Syrians have been killed by chemical weapons. Thursday’s public about-face in American policy toward Syria’s two-year civil war was driven by other factors as well… These included growing U.S. concerns about large-scale battlefield deployment of militants from the Iran-backed Lebanese militia Hezbollah–an appearance that alarmed Israel and caught the Americans by surprise–and President Bashar al-Assad’s battlefield gains.”

Micah Cohen: “The shift in administration policy on Syria seems reflective of public opinion. Polls have consistently shown Americans are deeply wary of the United States becoming involved in the fighting in Syria. But they also show that public support for intervention increases sharply under circumstances where it is confirmed that the Assad regime used chemical weapons.”

Quote of the Day

June 15, 2013 at 3:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I think people have gotten the idea that there’s an Orwellian state out there that somehow we’re operating in. That’s far from the case.”

— Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, quoted by Politicker.

Bush Explains Why He Could Be President

June 14, 2013 at 8:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In an interview with David Brody, Jeb Bush sketched out his case for why he might be a good president.

Said Bush: “It will be based on my record. And that record was one of solving problems from completely from a conservative perspective. I cut taxes every year, I shrunk the size of government.”

For his critics who say he’s too mainstream establishment: “I will be able to, I think, manage my way through all the chirpers out there.”

The Stories Missing From Your Feed

You already know the problem: the same story can look completely different depending on where you read it — and some barely show up at all because algorithms decide what you see.

My goal for Political Wire is to help you get outside those filters — to understand not just what happened, but how it’s being covered and who might be missing it. That’s why I use and recommend Ground News.

It’s an app and website that brings together global news from across the political spectrum, showing each source’s bias, factuality, and ownership.

What I find especially useful is the Blindspot Feed. It highlights stories getting heavy coverage on one side but little on the other — a quick way to see what your usual news diet may be missing.

Clinton Says Too Much Time Spent on Politics

June 14, 2013 at 5:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bill Clinton sidestepped a question from Bloomberg about whether there’s any chance we might see another Clinton in the White House in 2016 by saying, “Chelsea’s still too young.”

He added: “Let me make a serious comment. I think it really matters who the president is. I think these elections are important, but I think that only fixating on politics all the time gives us a form of national attention deficit disorder… I think we shouldn’t just fixate on the next presidential election all the time. We need to take a little time off to work and think about what our country needs and think about what we can do together and think about what the parties can do together and think about how we can reach across these lines that divide us and make something good happen for America.”

House Leaders Add Exceptions to Abortion Bill

June 14, 2013 at 5:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House GOP leaders quietly added language to their bill banning all abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy to include exceptions for rape and incest, the Washington Post reports.

Republicans were successful in preventing the language from being added but the Rules Committee made the change anyway at the behest of leaders.

Perry Says There’s No Freedom From Religion

June 14, 2013 at 3:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) signed a law protecting Christmas and other holiday celebrations in Texas public schools from legal challenges while stressing that freedom of religion is not the same thing as freedom from religion, the AP reports.

Said Perry: “It’s a shame that a bill like this one I’m signing today is even required, but I’m glad that we’re standing up for religious freedom in this state. Religious freedom does not mean freedom from religion.”

Governor Fires Cabinet Member Over Email

June 14, 2013 at 3:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett (R) fired a member of his cabinet over an e-mail containing racially charged language referring to a state employee, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

The full context of the e-mail, in which the official made a wordplay on colored, was not available. It is unclear how the e-mail came to Corbett’s attention.

Large Majority Still Supports Expanded Background Checks

June 14, 2013 at 2:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Public Policy Polling survey finds on the 6th month anniversary of the Newtown shootings that voters “are still angry with Congress over the lack of action on expanded background checks. They continue to have overwhelming bipartisan support with 71% of voters favoring them to only 22% who are opposed.”

“This still has the potential to be a major issue in next year’s midterm elections. 51% of voters say they’re less likely to support someone who voted against background checks next year to only 14% who say they would consider that a positive. Even among Republicans 30% say they’d be less inclined to vote for someone who opposed expanded background checks to 25% more likely, so this isn’t even something that would be a particular salient issue for potential primary challengers.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

June 14, 2013 at 1:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Twenty years ago, I never would have done that.”

— Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), quoted by Time, on agreeing to take a backseat in negotiations over new gun laws.

Tester Thinks Schweitzer is Running

June 14, 2013 at 11:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Asked if he thought former Montant Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D) would enter the U.S. Senate race, Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) told MSNBC, “I don’t bet the farm on many things, but I’d bet the farm he’s running.”

Clinton and Christie’s Private Friendship

June 14, 2013 at 10:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

ABC News has the back story behind New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s (R) appearance today at the Clinton Global Initiative:

“Intimates of both men say the real story behind today’s event is the private friendship that has developed between the ex-president and a governor who would like to be president. The two have met, traded war stories, talked on the phone, all inside the four years since Clinton campaigned hard on behalf of then-Gov. Jon Corzine, the incumbent Christie beat in 2009.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

June 14, 2013 at 10:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Immigrants are more fertile, and they love families, and they have more intact families, and they bring a younger population.”

— Jeb Bush, quoted by National Journal.

Republican Group Wants to Enforce Hastert Rule

June 14, 2013 at 10:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Roll Call: “An insurgent group of House Republicans is pushing to codify the ‘Hastert rule‘ to only allow bills with majority GOP support to come to the floor.”

Hickenlooper Just Ahead of Potential Challengers

June 14, 2013 at 10:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Quinnipiac poll in Colorado finds Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) just edging Tom Tancredo (R) in a possible race for governor, 42% to 41%.

Hickenlooper also barely leads Scott Gessler (R), 42% to 40%, and Greg Brophy (R), 43% to 37%.

The Paul-Rubio Bromance

June 14, 2013 at 10:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Beth Reinhard:
“Rand Paul and Marco Rubio may go head-to-head in a fierce competition
for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. But a funny thing is
happening on the way to the White House: The would-be rivals have found
themselves in a light bromance, each needing to bask in the other’s
glow for their own political purposes. Rubio needs Paul’s help — and
political cover on the right — to get an immigration bill passed. Paul
needs Rubio’s help — particularly with the Hispanic community — to
soften his image in the center.”

No Consensus Emerged After Newtown Shootings

June 14, 2013 at 10:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

USA Today:
“In the six months since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings,
lawmakers in four key states have approved significant restrictions on
access to firearms. But elsewhere in the USA, the picture is far from
clear. A USA Today analysis of the 86 state gun laws passed since Dec.
14 shows that states have both tightened and loosened access to guns.
Lawmakers in many states used the spotlight the shootings created to
broaden both who can carry a gun and where they can carry it. States
including Colorado and Maryland tightened access to guns, Arkansas and
Mississippi eased restrictions, and many other states issued rules whose
impact could be debated either way.”

Improving Economy Not Helping Obama

June 14, 2013 at 10:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Charlie Cook: “The good
news for President Obama and his administration is that all the
controversies swirling around the White House have not had a significant
impact on his job-approval ratings. The bad news is that, like so many
other second-term administrations, Obama’s may end up spending so much
of its last four years fighting fires and fending off congressional
inquiries that it gets little else done… if the administration is
bogged down in controversy, voters won’t be handing the president or
anyone else any laurels for the economic recovery. That’s what Obama,
his administration, and congressional Democrats facing voters next year
ought to worry about.”

Obama’s Leak Plumber

June 14, 2013 at 10:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

National Journal: “It was Ronald Machen’s office which issued the warrant request for the emails and phone records of James Rosen, the Fox News reporter caught up in that leak about North Korea’s nuclear program. It’s his office that got those Associated Press phone records. And there’s a chance an Edward Snowden trial, if there is one, could end up in Machen’s jurisdiction.”
