Trump Mocks James Talarico
President Trump mocked U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico (D) — saying that “you can’t get elected as a vegan in Texas,” the New York Post reports.
Trump called Talarico, who recently became the subject of viral scorn for ordering a meatless taco, “a candidate that believes in six genders, and he takes it to Jesus Christ, and he’s wearing a mask six months ago — anybody wearing a mask six months ago doesn’t get it.”
He added: “He’s a vegan. He’s a vegan in Texas, and you can’t get elected as a vegan in Texas.”
Trump’s Corruption Is Unprecedented
John Avlon: “Let’s say it plainly: There has never been a president as corrupt as Donald Trump. There is no close second in our history.”
“Take two days in May as Exhibit A. Americans just found out that in the first quarter of this year, Trump’s stock portfolio made 3,600 trades — an average of nearly 60 a day. This is a rapacious pace that would make a day trader on meth blush. Many of these appear suspiciously timed to benefit from actions approved by the president himself. For example, his Nvidia stock surged after Trump announced the company would be permitted to sell its cutting-edge AI chips to China. Similar suspiciously well-timed calls were made ahead of big government moves involving other companies, from Intel to Palantir to Boeing. The Trump Organization says all trades are made by a third-party investment advisor. If so, they appear to be psychic.”
“But the apparent insider trading scam being run from within the Oval Office is small change — merely millions of dollars — compared to the self-dealing plunder of $1.8 billion tax-payer dollars being pushed through the DOJ and IRS.”
Rubio Urges the Cuban People to Align With Trump
“Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a rare direct appeal to the Cuban people in a video posted on Wednesday, the anniversary of their independence from Spain and U.S. military occupation, urging them to align with the Trump administration as it seeks to weaken the Cuban regime,” the New York Times reports.
Said Rubio: “President Trump is offering a new path between the U.S. and a new Cuba.”
What’s Good for Trump Is Weighing Down His Party
“President Donald Trump doesn’t believe in a political law of gravity,” the Washington Post reports.
“The more his standing sinks with the country at large — a host of polls show it near its lowest ever — the more he bends the Republican Party to his will and endangers the obeisant GOP’s prospects in the fall with unpopular and even brazen actions.”
“The result is a president historically strong at demanding political fealty within his party but prone to executive actions that alienate the broader public. That paradox has fostered a disinclination — and weakened ability — to act with Congress on issues that matter most to voters, a cycle that Trump is unwilling, or unable, to break.”
Why Thomas Massie Thought He Was Different
Russell Berman: “For months leading up to the primary, Massie had held up his race as an important test case for the Trump era: If he could criticize the president and win anyway, his victory would embolden other Republicans to speak out and vote against Trump when they felt compelled to, loosening his viselike grip on the party. As many as a dozen House Republicans, he told me last month, would then be ‘more liable to vote with their constituents instead of the party line.'”
“That prediction, however, looked dubious even before Massie’s defeat became clear, as Trump reasserted his dominance over the GOP elsewhere. Less than six months from the midterm elections, the president may be as unpopular as he’s ever been with the general public. But inside the Republican Party, he remains the undisputed kingmaker.”
Johnson Won’t Say If Capitol Rioters Will Be Paid
“Speaker Mike Johnson refused to rule out whether individuals convicted as part of the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol would be eligible to receive money from the Trump administration’s new ‘Anti-Weaponization Fund’ — or say whether he would oppose a scenario where they would qualify,” Politico reports.
Meanwhile the New York Times reports two police officers “who defended the Capitol against a pro-Trump mob on Jan. 6, 2021, sued the Trump administration to try to block the creation of a nearly $1.8 billion fund that they say will be used to reward the rioters and right-wing militia groups who tried to stop Congress from certifying the election results that day.”
Another Bonus Quote of the Day
“After 18 months of blackout, of not letting me on Fox, they finally let me on Fox today, four hours into the election. Their slop is selling so they will keep selling it. But listen, I got to watch Fox, also, for the first time in 18 months.”
— Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), quoted by Deadline.

Lauren Boebert Tries to Make Amends with Trump

Said Boebert: “My friend & Co-Chair gave his all in Kentucky! Trump is my President! Jesus is Lord! I look forward to a lifetime filled with joy, purpose, and gratitude. May God continue to bless America and the freedoms that make this nation the greatest.”

Exchange of the Day
Vice President JD Vance took questions from reporters:
REPORTER: How can you argue to Americans that you’re cleaning up corruption, when the president seems to be talking up stocks that he owns, selling them and enriching himself?
VANCE: Come on, man, have a little bit of objectivity in the way that you ask these questions. The president doesn’t sit at the oval office on his computer, on his robinhood account, buying and selling stocks. That’s absurd. He’s not making the stock trades himself.

Georgia Republicans Are Full MAGA Now
“The MAGA takeover of the Georgia GOP is nearly complete,” Politico reports.
