Trump Leaves the Hard Part for Later in Iran Deal

June 15, 2026 at 7:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “The US and Iran needed more than two months of fitful, strained negotiations to agree on a deal to halt their fighting and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Now comes the hard part.”

“The provisional agreement announced by the two sides on Sunday night — President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday — leaves a narrow window of 60 days to negotiate issues around Iran’s nuclear program that bedeviled his predecessors for years. The memorandum of understanding, which has yet to be released, will be formally signed on June 19.”

“That gap raised the possibility that details on the text remained unresolved and the signing could be derailed.”

Rand Paul Defrosts His Relationship with Trump

June 15, 2026 at 7:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Semafor: “The Kentucky Republican senator spent much of Trump’s second term at odds with the president on major issues, from last year’s tax cuts to Trump’s sweeping tariffs to the war in Iran, even opposing Markwayne Mullin’s confirmation as Homeland Security secretary. That distance got Paul labeled a ‘sick wacko’ by the loyalty-conscious Trump, who initially excluded him from last year’s White House picnic.”

“But in recent weeks, Paul spearheaded a $70 billion immigration enforcement funding bill, drawing praise from Trump and an invitation to the White House signing ceremony. He’s giving the president backup on voter ID and ending birthright citizenship.”

“Paul is also providing an encouraging counterweight to more hawkish colleagues who warn Trump not to negotiate with Iran. And his picnic invitation caused no kerfuffle this year.”

Trump’s Lasting Legacy Is Trump Himself

June 15, 2026 at 7:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NOTUS: “When a former U.S. ambassador reached out to Donald Trump seeking his endorsement for a congressional bid, the president declined. In Trump’s mind, he’d already done enough.”

“The president said he wouldn’t endorse the candidate ever again because, to him, the person would be called ‘honorable’ for the rest of their life. ‘I literally changed your name,’ Trump told the candidate in a conversation.”

“Trump’s stance is indicative of a defining feature of his political view: Loyalty is worth rewarding, but rewards don’t last forever. Changing someone’s name or the physical appearance of Washington does, though, and that’s the defining legacy Trump is focused on.”

The Stories Missing From Your Feed

You already know the problem: the same story can look completely different depending on where you read it — and some barely show up at all because algorithms decide what you see.

My goal for Political Wire is to help you get outside those filters — to understand not just what happened, but how it’s being covered and who might be missing it. That’s why I use and recommend Ground News.

It’s an app and website that brings together global news from across the political spectrum, showing each source’s bias, factuality, and ownership.

What I find especially useful is the Blindspot Feed. It highlights stories getting heavy coverage on one side but little on the other — a quick way to see what your usual news diet may be missing.

JD Vance’s New Book Focuses on His Catholic Faith

June 15, 2026 at 7:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “When JD Vance published his best-selling book Hillbilly Elegy in 2016, he had drifted away from the Christian faith of his childhood — a familiar story amid a broader national retreat from organized religion that had left church pews emptier than in previous decades.”

“Now, Vance as vice president — and likely 2028 presidential contender — is a practicing Catholic, a conversion he has chronicled in his second book, Communion, publishing Tuesday. And it’s landing on bookshelves amid a remarkable turnaround: Catholicism is, by some measures, experiencing a resurgence in the United States unlike anything in recent memory.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on a Hot Streak

June 15, 2026 at 6:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Axios: “In the last month alone, four progressive House candidates she’s endorsed in open primaries have cruised to victory, making her an early kingmaker as she weighs a 2028 presidential run.”

Allies Plan for a World Less Reliant on the U.S.

June 15, 2026 at 6:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “After years of tariff threats, diplomatic whiplash and public confrontations, many world leaders have concluded that Trump is not an interruption to the international order but a feature of it — a reordering likely to endure regardless of who sits in the Oval Office. Rather than simply accommodating Trump, they are increasingly preparing for a future in which the U.S. is a less predictable partner and Europe is less inclined to follow America’s lead.”

“The shift will hang over the summit, which begins today as fallout over the Iran war continues to jolt the global economy, shifting energy markets and raising fears of renewed inflation even as Trump on Sunday announced an end to hostilities.”

Trump Weighed Suspending a Constitutional Right

June 15, 2026 at 6:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Secret memos show that the White House debated last year, to a greater degree than previously known, whether to limit habeas corpus rights for undocumented immigrants,” the New York Times reports.

Trump’s Iran Deal Raises Questions

June 15, 2026 at 6:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump is set to arrive in France on Monday having just announced a peace deal with Iran that the public hasn’t seen and is set to dominate high-stakes discussions with allies,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Trump will spend three days in Evian-les-Bains for a summit of the Group of Seven leading nations nominally about technology, trade and global economic imbalances. But the high-level discussions are certain to center on the interim agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, lift the U.S. blockade and pause the war for at least 60 days, leaving thornier negotiations about Tehran’s nuclear work for future technical talks.”

“When Trump lands, French President Emmanuel Macron and other world leaders are expected to shower him with praise over the deal while also peppering him with questions on how such a complicated pact could hold together over the coming months.”

Trump Kicks Off White House Cage Match

June 14, 2026 at 9:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “President Trump kicked off an Ultimate Fighting Championship cage fight on the South Lawn of the White House following a brief delay because of potential thunderstorms.”

“Shortly before 8:30 p.m., the president walked out of the Oval Office and later appeared on a White House balcony alongside UFC CEO Dana White…”

“Fourteen men are scheduled to face off in seven bouts under a towering spaceshiplike structure on the South Lawn, fulfilling Trump’s penchant for showmanship and boundary-pushing.”

Kennedy Center Establishes Endowment in Trump’s Name

June 14, 2026 at 9:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CBS News: “The Kennedy Center is establishing a new endowment in President Trump’s name to support previously existing private endowments and its $257 million in federal funding.”

“The fund was created at a Thursday meeting of the performing arts center’s board of trustees, with the members voting unanimously to acknowledge the president’s contributions to the center by all legal means. The Kennedy Center’s board is chaired by Mr. Trump and largely made up of his allies.”

U.S. and Iran Agree to Peace Deal

June 14, 2026 at 6:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iran and the U.S. have agreed on a peace deal, the two nations announced Sunday, a major breakthrough after nearly four months of fighting that created global political and economic turmoil,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Pakistani negotiators said a formal signing would come later this week… The official signing ceremony will be on Friday in Switzerland.”

Trump Again Claims Peace Deal with Iran

June 14, 2026 at 5:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The United States and Iran have reached a deal to end months of fighting, according to President Donald Trump and the leader of Pakistan, which has been mediating the talks,” the Washington Post reports.

“There was no immediate confirmation from Iran.”

Wall Street Journal: “Trump said this deal, which Iran hasn’t yet confirmed it would agree to, will either be signed electronically by himself or Vice President JD Vance.”

Why Everyone Wants Jon Ossoff to Run for President

June 14, 2026 at 4:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michelle Goldberg: “If you were cooking up an ideal 2028 candidate in a lab, he — and let’s face it, it’s probably a he — would look a lot like Ossoff. He’s young and handsome, with a picture-perfect family: a beautiful wife who works as an obstetrician-gynecologist and two small daughters. He’s a Southerner from a reddish state with a history of wooing Black voters. And he’s a Jewish critic of Israel who, as much as anyone in politics today, has the potential to bridge the Democratic Party’s agonizing divide over Zionism.”

“But the excitement Ossoff is generating is about more than demographics. It stems from his skill in eviscerating Trump’s gluttonous profiteering, his brazen attempts to turn this country into the most squalid sort of kleptocracy.”

Washington, D.C. on the Cusp of Change

June 14, 2026 at 4:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “With the Democratic primary only days away, Washingtonians are wading through a last barrage of mass campaign mailings and television and social media ads as they prepare to elect new leaders to manage a mountain of political and economic challenges, the magnitude of which the city has not faced in more than a generation.”

“Adding to the uncertainty, residents are making their choices in a new way this year, with the city inaugurating ranked-choice voting, allowing voters to list in order of preference as many as five candidates for mayor and a slew of other offices.”

The Generational Disaster of Trump, Bush and Clinton

June 14, 2026 at 4:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

John Harris: “So there they are: three American presidents turning 80 this summer, old men by any measure. They have starkly different styles, temperaments and goals for their country. But they are united in some important ways. All in their own way and in their time were uncommonly talented politicians.”

“All three are also the preeminent representatives of the generation that trashed American politics.”

“Clinton, Bush and Trump surely hold significantly different measures of culpability for the squalor of American political culture. But all three children of 1946 are central characters in a decades-long descent in which Americans have been progressively more tribalistic in their political affiliations; ever-more coarse and insulting in public discourse; more mystified by and contemptuous of those who disagree; less trusting in government and most other establishment institutions, less confident in the country’s ability to reliably and rationally govern itself or fashion a consensus around solving long-term problems, or even to agree on the most basic standards of right and wrong.”

Outside Groups Hide Their Sources of Funding

June 14, 2026 at 4:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “A record number of groups are exploiting a gap in campaign finance law to flood this year’s primary elections with money — without disclosing their donors until long after the race is over.”

“More than $48 million has already been spent on House and Senate primaries this year by super PACs that did not have to reveal their donors before elections took place… That is more than double the total at this time in the 2024 cycle, and 10 times higher than in 2018.”

Trump Aides Fear Situation Room Leak

June 14, 2026 at 3:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Axios: “Top White House officials believe New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan obtained audio recordings of Situation Room meetings for their forthcoming book, Regime Change.”

“Such a taped leak would be a shocking breach of one of the most secure settings on Earth. Independent recording devices in the Situation Room are forbidden.”

“”We’re afraid some of our most sensitive conversations were being recorded,” an administration source told us. “And we have no idea which ones.””

America Is Riven with Doubt and Pessimism

June 14, 2026 at 3:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Americans have a bleak outlook on the nation’s future ahead of its 250th birthday next month, with most saying the U.S. has already seen its best days and a record-low number saying they are extremely proud to be Americans,” according to a new NBC News poll.
