Liberals Push Warren to Run for President

December 9, 2014 at 7:31 am EST By Taegan Goddard 22 Comments

The liberal group Moveon.org is poised to spend $1 million on a campaign to draft Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) into the 2016 presidential race, “an indication of an appetite among some activists for a more progressive alternative to Hillary Clinton,” the New York Times reports.

A Warren spokesperson responds: “As Senator Warren has said many times, she is not running for president.”

Warren Complicates Schumer’s Rise in Senate

November 20, 2014 at 7:12 am EST By Taegan Goddard 8 Comments

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) “has long been viewed as the heir apparent to Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, with such strong support among moderates that a group of them privately urged him to mount a coup for party leader after the midterm election meltdown,” Politico reports.

“Schumer didn’t take on Reid — he’s too loyal — but he is being forced to face a new power center inside the caucus, populists such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)… Warren’s rise in Senate leadership – and her popularity among grassroots liberals – represents an unexpected presence in Schumer’s leadership orbit, where he has spent years cultivating a reputation as one of the masterminds of Democratic messaging.”

Elizabeth Warren Rises in Prominence

November 15, 2014 at 7:43 am EST By Taegan Goddard 5 Comments

“Not many Democrats emerged from the midterm election rubble unscathed. One exception may be Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts Democrat who is becoming a new center of gravity in a demoralized party,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“In a nod to her growing influence, Senate Democrats rewarded the populist firebrand with a spot in the party’s leadership this week. A group called ‘Ready for Warren’ said it would step up its efforts to draft her for a presidential bid and plans to hire staff in states with early nomination contests. The number of small donors to the group rose eightfold compared with the week before the election, said Erica Sagrans, Ready for Warren campaign manager and a former Obama campaign aide.”

Liberal Donors Urge Warren to Run for President

November 14, 2014 at 7:10 am EST By Taegan Goddard 8 Comments

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) “insists she has no interest in running for president in 2016, but the rich liberals to whom she spoke Thursday afternoon seemed unwilling to take ‘no’ for an answer,” Politico reports.

“The Massachusetts senator got a rock stars’ welcome during a closed-door speech to major donors, one of whom interrupted her by yelling ‘Run, Liz, Run!’ Warren drew multiple standing ovations during her talk, held in a banquet room at Washington’s Mandarin Oriental hotel during the annual winter meeting of the Democracy Alliance, a club of major liberal donors.”

Senate Democrats Want Warren in Leadership

November 12, 2014 at 9:27 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 26 Comments

Politico reports that Senate Democrats want to enlist Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) as a member of their leadership.

“The incoming Senate minority leader, Harry Reid, is engaged in private talks with the Massachusetts freshman to create a special leadership post for the former Harvard professor, according to several people familiar with the matter. It’s unclear exactly what the new job would entail — but luring the populist liberal into leadership could inject fresh blood into a team reeling from significant midterm election losses.”

“Adding Warren, Democrats say, would bring in a nationally known name who could help sharpen the Democratic message as it goes toe-to-toe with the new Senate Republican majority. The move would likely be viewed favorably by an increasingly liberal caucus. But elevating Warren could also be seen as an indication that the new Senate Democratic minority is less interested in bipartisan compromises than the White House or Senate Republicans.”
