Why Republicans Love Scott Walker

January 29, 2015 at 1:04 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 91 Comments

The Hill notes that Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) appeal to Republicans is that he’s been able to win without caving to Democrats.

“Walker has long drawn praise from disparate parts of his party, though questions have lingered about his charisma. Hard-line conservatives love his high-profile battles with Wisconsin’s unions and successful push for legislation on a number of their priorities, including lower taxes, tightened restrictions on abortions and loosened ones on guns… Establishment-leaning Republicans love that he’s shown how to govern and win three elections in four years in a state that usually leans Democratic.”

Walker Not Worried About Being Bland

January 28, 2015 at 12:14 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 38 Comments

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) said that he “is seriously considering running for president because he sees gaps in the field of likely Republican candidates, and that he doesn’t have a problem with being branded as bland or uncharismatic,” the AP reports.

Said Walker: “The media is going to peg any prospective candidate with a tag. I’d rather have bland or uncharismatic than dumb or ignorant, or corrupt or any of the other things that they could label other would-be candidates out there, or old for that matter.”

Walker Begins Preparation for White House Bid

January 27, 2015 at 1:30 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 26 Comments

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) “has taken the first formal step toward a presidential candidacy in 2016, establishing a committee that will help spread his message and underwrite his activities as he seeks to build his political and fundraising networks in the months ahead,” the Washington Post reports.

“Walker filed papers to set up the committee, called Our American Revival, and a new Web site for the organization was scheduled to go live later Tuesday. The steps come after a busy weekend of pre-presidential events that included his address at the Iowa Freedom Summit, a later appearance at a gathering in California hosted by the billionaire Koch brothers and a stopover in Denver for additional fundraising.”

Walker Shines in Iowa

January 25, 2015 at 8:24 am EST By Taegan Goddard 74 Comments

Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) “stock is soaring after a triumphant return to Iowa,” The Hill reports.

“The Wisconsin Republican governor delivered a pitch-perfect speech to a room packed with influential Hawkeye State conservatives on Saturday, walking them through his robust resume and ideology with a passion that surprised many. Activists say Walker came out on top after 10 hours of candidate speeches.”

The Des Moines Register says Walker “was the center of buzz after his speech.”

Walker Hires Top Iowa Strategist

January 23, 2015 at 10:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard 12 Comments

The team that is building Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s political organization for a possible presidential campaign has brought on a GOP strategist with Iowa ties, the Des Moines Register reports.

David Polyansky, “a Texan who played senior roles in two Iowa presidential campaigns and was the top strategist in Republican Joni Ernst’s successful campaign for U.S. Senate this past fall, will be Team Walker’s senior adviser in Iowa.”

Watch Scott Walker in Iowa

January 17, 2015 at 4:26 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 21 Comments

The Economist: “Mr Walker is almost tailor-made to prevail in the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses. A credibly conservative evangelical Christian (he’s over there on the right with Messrs Paul and Cruz), Mr Walker has proved his capacity to vanquish Democrats first by laying low Wisconsin’s public-sector unions in a noisy battle, and then by facing a recall and winning re-election in the face of an organized national campaign to avenge the union defeat. Though he is not exactly an electrifying presence, Mr Walker is a well-tested, articulate, union-slaying, budget-cutting exponent of conservative ideals that could appeal to both the pro-business party establishment and the Christian conservative grassroots. This race could get interesting.”

Walker All But Says He’s Running for President

January 16, 2015 at 7:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard 10 Comments

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) left little doubt that he is planning to run for the White House in 2016, Time reports.

“Speaking to the Republican National Committee (RNC) at its winter meeting in San Diego, the union-busting Midwesterner cast himself as a ‘new, fresh leader,’ laying out a clear rationale for his candidacy as a blue-state governor with a proven record of reforming government.”

CNN: “While not outwardly saying he would run, it was clear Walker was making the point to these state party leaders and activists that he has the record and the experience to be the next GOP nominee.”

Scott Walker May Be a Bigger Threat to Jeb Bush

January 12, 2015 at 10:24 am EST By Taegan Goddard 41 Comments

Nate Cohn says the most compelling challenger to Jeb Bush for the GOP presidential nomination “may be Scott Walker, the battle-hardened governor of Wisconsin. He has made moves toward running, and on paper, he’s the type of candidate who should deeply concern Mr. Bush.”

“Unlike the flawed but better-known conservatives, Mr. Walker has the potential to have broad appeal throughout the Republican Party. Mr. Walker, born in Colorado Springs, is an evangelical Christian who defeated public employee unions in a high-profile battle over collective bargaining rights and who made big budget cuts in a state that has voted for Democrats in seven consecutive presidential elections.”

Scott Walker Is a Big Threat to Jeb Bush

January 8, 2015 at 8:16 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 40 Comments

Washington Post: “Right now, Walker is the candidate who can most realistically unite the base and the establishment wings of the party. One only needs to glance at conservative media to see that the Republican base has little time for Jeb Bush… Walker, by contrast, is a hero to the grassroots after winning multiple battles with Wisconsin Democrats and unions. And he also has shown the ability to bring in the money from big donors — facing a recall election in 2012, Walker outraised his Democratic opponent eight to one, with contributions from 13 billionaires outside of the state… And his Wisconsin base should give him plenty of chances to woo Iowa Republicans over the next year. If Jeb Bush and his team are starting up their opposition research unit, Walker is the first one they should target.”

Walker Staffs Up for 2016 Presidential Bid

January 7, 2015 at 3:29 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 10 Comments

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) “will launch a new political organization in the coming weeks and has tapped a national political strategist to serve as his campaign manager should he decide to run for president,” CNN reports.

“Walker, who was sworn in to a second term in Madison this week, quietly brought on Rick Wiley, a former Republican National Committee political director and veteran of multiple presidential campaigns, about a month ago to build a political operation in advance of the 2016 race, the sources said.”

Walker Confronts Rift at Home as He Mulls 2016 Bid

January 3, 2015 at 9:07 am EST By Taegan Goddard 4 Comments

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) “has rolled over his Democratic opponents in Wisconsin, shutting down their allies in labor unions, turning back attempts to recall him and handily winning re-election in November,” the AP reports.

“But as he prepares for the possibility of taking his winning record into a campaign for president, Walker is running into trouble from an unexpected source: his own overwhelmingly Republican Legislature. Walker, who’s trying to polish an image of a governor who gets things done efficiently, is confronting lawmakers who want to flex their increased political power by wading into difficult issues, such as right-to-work legislation, to score major conservative victories.”

Walker Plots a White House Bid

November 20, 2014 at 7:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard 15 Comments

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), “pivoting from his bigger-than-expected reelection win this month, is taking active steps toward a presidential campaign that would launch next summer and contrast his record of conservative achievements in a swing state with paralysis in Washington,” Politico reports.

“In interviews this week, Walker and his top political advisers provided the fullest account yet of his plans for the likely rollout of a national campaign. The 47-year-old Republican intends to use an upcoming legislative session in Wisconsin to push an ambitious agenda that could, in combination with his triumphs over Big Labor, bolster his standing with Republican primary voters: Repealing unpopular Common Core standards, requiring drug tests for welfare beneficiaries and cutting property taxes.”

Conservatives Like Walker in 2016

November 19, 2014 at 8:21 am EST By Taegan Goddard 12 Comments

John Podhoretz says Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) is an early frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination.

“I just spent a week among people who are: 550 conservative and Republican voters who traveled on National Review magazine’s semi-annual cruise. The cruisers are consumed with politics. And overwhelmingly — and I mean no one else was even close — their favorite for 2016 is the governor of Wisconsin.”

“These NR readers don’t precisely match the GOP electorate, but they’re a pretty significant leading indicator. They are, to a person, conservative, and they know a great deal about the ways that conservative ideas and Republican politics interact — and clash.”

Meanwhile, Walker told the AP it’s “pretty obvious” that running for president is something he has to consider: “I spend a lot of time not just talking with people but praying about, thinking about with my family as well whether or not eventually that might be a call to run for the presidency.”

Quote of the Day

November 18, 2014 at 7:30 am EST By Taegan Goddard 14 Comments

“I say this only half-jokingly, that you have to be crazy to want to be president. Anyone who’s seen the pictures of this president or any of the former presidents can see the before and after, no matter how fit, no matter how young they are, they age pretty rapidly when you look at their hair and everything else involved with it.”

— Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), quoted by Fox6 Now.

November 18, 2014 at 7:16 am EST By Taegan Goddard 20 Comments

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) raised the subject of Hillary Clinton’s age when discussing when he might run for president in an interview with a Wisconsin Fox affiliate.

Said Walker: “Whether it’s two years, six years, 20 years from now, because at 47, I mean I think about Hillary Clinton, I could run 20 years from now for president and still be about the same age as the former secretary of State is right now.”

“She embodies Washington. She embodies that old, tired top-down approach from the government. I think in the states as governors, we offer a much better alternative and I think there’s a number of us who would be good prospects out there.”

Walker Hints at White House Bid

November 10, 2014 at 8:59 am EST By Taegan Goddard 26 Comments

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) dropped hints that he is considering a run for president in 2016, the Huffington Post reports.

Said Walker: “I care deeply about not only my state but my country. We’ll see what the future holds.”

“It’s no secret that Walker has his eye on the White House. In 2011, his battle against unions’ collective bargaining rights propelled him to the national spotlight and popularized him among conservatives. He survived a recall and won three elections in a battleground state that tends lean blue.”
