Trump Doubles-Down on Losing Strategy

December 20, 2018 at 2:39 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ron Brownstein: “With his threat to shut down the federal government unless he receives funding for his border wall, President Trump is employing a tactic that is unpopular to advance a goal that may be even more unpopular.”

“Trump’s threats — and the muted public resistance to them from GOP congressional leaders — offer the latest evidence that the party’s drubbing in the midterm election has not changed the White House’s fundamental strategic calculus.”

“Though the proposed border wall faces widespread opposition among all the groups in the electorate that powered the big Democratic gains in the House last month, and government shutdowns historically have alienated a broad range of the public, both the end and the means remain popular among the President’s core supporters.”

Trump Undermines His Case for a Border Wall

December 20, 2018 at 9:02 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump on Twitter: “With so much talk about the Wall, people are losing sight of the great job being done on our Southern Border by Border Patrol, ICE and our great Military. Remember the Caravans? Well, they didn’t get through and none are forming or on their way. Border is tight. Fake News silent!”

Trump Says He’ll Win on Border Wall

December 19, 2018 at 8:41 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

After dropping demands for border wall funding, President Trump tweeted that Republicans will win on the divisive issue “one way or the other.”

Said Trump: “In our Country, so much money has been poured down the drain, for so many years, but when it comes to Border Security and the Military, the Democrats fight to the death. We won on the Military, which is being completely rebuilt. One way or the other, we will win on the Wall!”

Majority Don’t Support Building a Border Wall

December 18, 2018 at 1:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Quinnipiac poll finds American voters oppose building a wall on the Mexican border by 54% to 43%.

However, this is the highest level of support for the wall since the poll first asked the question in November 2016.

The GOP’s Border Blues

December 14, 2018 at 9:29 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “For all the talk about Trump’s border-wall demand in the current fight to keep the government open, it’s worth reminding everyone of the GOP’s midterm performance in the states along the U.S.-Mexico border. That performance? It wasn’t that great.”

  • In California, the GOP got wiped out, losing seven House seats, the gubernatorial race, and Republicans didn’t even have a candidate in the Senate matchup due to the state’s Top 2 primary system.
  • In Arizona, the GOP won the gubernatorial race, but it lost a Senate seat, as well as the competitive AZ-2 House contest.
  • In New Mexico, Democrats won up and down the ballot – for governor, senator, and it picked up the NM-2 House seat.
  • And in Texas, Sen. Ted Cruz barely won his Senate race, while Democrats picked up two congressional seats outside of Dallas (TX-32) and Houston (TX-7).

“Now much of that poor performance by the GOP could be attributed to the sizable portion of the Latino vote in these four states, or the Dem performance in the suburbs in Dallas, Houston and Phoenix. But as President Trump tried to make the last weeks of the midterms about immigration and that caravan, note the states where that message appeared to fall flat — the ones closest to the border.”

Is Trump About to Fold on His Border Wall?

December 14, 2018 at 6:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook : “Several different people inside the White House and on Capitol Hill tell us they are getting some signals President Trump might back a bipartisan package of spending bills to avert a government shutdown. The package — a so-called minibus — funds border security, but not the wall.”

“Make no mistake: This would be a fold from the president, and would be read as such by his base on Capitol Hill. The White House would try to sell it as a victory, of sorts, heading into the holiday.”

“It would, however, be a recognition that the math simply isn’t there for Trump as he pushes for a $5 billion border wall.”

“I don’t understand the strategy, but maybe he’s figured it out and he’ll tell us in due course. But I don’t understand it.”

— Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), quoted by the Washington Post, on President Trump’s strategy to get $5 billion in funding for a border wall.

House GOP Can’t Find the Votes for Trump’s Wall

December 12, 2018 at 6:31 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republicans are struggling to come up with a strategy to fulfill President Trump’s demands that the lower chamber pass a funding bill that includes $5 billion for his promised border wall,” The Hill reports.

“By Wednesday evening, GOP leaders still had not settled on what vehicle they would use to fund the wall or if they would even take a vote this week to do so. Lawmakers in the House have until just Dec. 21 to avert a partial government shutdown, and are only scheduled to be working for four of those days.”

Trump Moves to Deport Vietnam War Refugees

December 12, 2018 at 4:12 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration is resuming its efforts to deport certain protected Vietnamese immigrants who have lived in the United States for decades—many of them having fled the country during the Vietnam War,” The Atlantic reports.

“This is the latest move in the president’s long record of prioritizing harsh immigration and asylum restrictions, and one that’s sure to raise eyebrows—the White House had hesitantly backed off the plan in August before reversing course. In essence, the administration has now decided that Vietnamese immigrants who arrived in the country before the establishment of diplomatic ties between the United States and Vietnam are subject to standard immigration law—meaning they are all eligible for deportation.”

Trump’s Focus on Immigration Unites a Smaller GOP

Based on his explosive Oval Office meeting with Democratic leaders yesterday, it’s obvious President Trump isn’t backing away from immigration as his top issue. And he was clear in his reasoning: “I think I win that every single time.”

Quote of the Day

December 12, 2018 at 11:42 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump started by bragging about how great border security is going under his watch. That, by the way, is with no wall. If it were truly the case, as the president said, that border security is better than it’s ever been, what’s wrong with another year of the same funding? If things are going so great, why does he have to threaten to shut down the government for his $5 billion wall? It makes no sense.”

— Sen. Chuck Schumer, quoted by NBC News, arguing that President Trump lives in a “cocoon of his own mistruth” and that he and Nancy Pelosi “had to puncture that cocoon and he threw a temper tantrum because of it.”

Trump Shows Weakness In Confrontation with Democrats

December 11, 2018 at 7:37 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

John Harwood: “In today’s extraordinarily-fractious, on-camera Oval Office session with Congressional Democratic leaders, Trump highlighted his own vulnerability. First, he repeated his false claim in early morning tweets that his long-sought U.S-Mexico border wall has largely been built, with the Pentagon poised to complete it even if Congress won’t provide financing.”

“That telegraphed his expectation that lawmakers won’t include wall funding in the year-end spending bill needed to keep government open. Anticipating defeat undercuts Republican leaders who’ve demanded that funding on Trump’s behalf.”

“Trump hobbled his own cause further by trying to strike an unyielding pose.”

Washington Post: “For Trump, who once boasted he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and not lose supporters, the fight over the wall has reached a moment of truth as he confronts the reality that, with Democrats poised to control the House in January, this could be his last chance to make good on a promise that has become an existential part of his presidency.”

Trump Would Be ‘Proud’ to Shut Down Government

December 11, 2018 at 12:34 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Prior to his meeting with Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer, President Trump brought reporters into the Oval Office and — in an extended, heated exchange before the cameras — clashed with the two Democratic leaders over congressional support for funding for his border wall, declaring that he is “proud to shut down the government for border security,” Axios reports.

The Washington Post called it “an explosive and acrimonious Oval Office encounter played out live with cameras rolling.”

Trump Suggests Military Will Build Border Wall

December 11, 2018 at 12:24 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump suggested the U.S. military would construct a wall at the U.S. border with Mexico if Democrats refused to agree to provide funding for one, hours ahead of a critical meeting at the White House with Democratic leaders to negotiate a year-end spending bill, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said Trump on Twitter: “I look forward to my meeting with Chuck Schumer & Nancy Pelosi. In 2006, Democrats voted for a Wall, and they were right to do so. Today, they no longer want Border Security. They will fight it at all cost, and Nancy must get votes for Speaker. But the Wall will get built.”

Most Don’t Want Shutdown Over Border Wall

December 11, 2018 at 7:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new NPR/PBS/Marist poll finds that 57% of Americans think President Trump should compromise on his border wall to prevent a government shutdown.

Furthermore, nearly 69% of Americans do not consider building a border wall between the United States and Mexico to be an immediate priority for the next Congress.

Definition of ‘Border Wall’ Impeding Spending Talks

December 6, 2018 at 9:43 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Senators came to a bipartisan agreement this summer to provide $1.6 billion for 65 miles of a beefed-up barrier along the Southwest border… But now the two parties can’t even agree on whether the $1.6 billion is for Trump’s wall or not.”

“That has led Chuck Schumer to argue that the bill gives Trump zero dollars for the ‘wall’ and instead provides for ‘border security,’ even as some progressives urge the Senate to abandon the deal. In the face of Schumer’s stance, Republicans are defending the $1.6 billion pact as giving the president exactly what he’s requesting, worried that may be all that can get through the Senate and that anything more would lead to a shutdown just days before Christmas.”

U.S. Considers Fee to Apply for Asylum

December 4, 2018 at 7:09 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration is considering charging immigrants a fee to apply for asylum protection in the United States,” BuzzFeed News reports.

“The proposal, included in a not-yet-finalized draft regulation, would charge applicants, if they are already residing in the US, $50 to apply for asylum. Currently, there is no fee to enter an ‘affirmative asylum’ application. The fee would not apply to those who claim a fear of persecution at ports of entry or those who apply for the protections while in deportation proceedings. There would be no waiver of the fee for those who cannot afford to pay the $50.”
