Trump Rivals Coordinate In Last Ditch Effort to Stop Him

March 12, 2016 at 7:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard 95 Comments

“Republicans’ last-gasp effort to stop Donald Trump from seizing their party’s presidential nomination kicked into high gear Friday, as his three remaining challengers avoided attacking one another, and their outside allies shifted money to states where each can take the most votes away from the front-runner,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“In the starkest illustration of the strategy, Sen. Marco Rubio’s campaign urged Ohio supporters to back Gov. John Kasich, to keep the front-runner from capturing the winner-take-all state. The Rubio team’s attempt to coordinate marks a recognition that Trump victories Tuesday in Ohio and Florida would give the New Yorker an unshakable grip on the GOP presidential nomination.

Trump Tax Returns May Prove He’s Not That Rich

March 12, 2016 at 7:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard 43 Comments

Fortune: “Until then, voters can glean a great deal of information from two sets of documents the Trump campaign has already provided: A balance sheet released in June, when Trump declared his candidacy for President, and a 92-page Personal Financial Disclosure (PFD) form submitted to the Federal Election Commission a month later.”

“Neither document is as telling as a tax return would be. But when closely read together, you can learn a great deal about Trump’s financial affairs. Here’s the most concerning thing I learned: Trump appears to have overstated his income, by a lot, which could be the reason he has so far tried to avoid releasing his returns.”

Gallup: “While it’s hard to pinpoint precisely why Obama’s approval rating has risen among Democrats recently, the unusual status of the Republican primary race — exemplified in particular by frontrunner Donald Trump’s campaign style and rhetoric — may serve to make Obama look statesmanlike in comparison.”

March 11, 2016 at 10:28 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 213 Comments

New York Times: “Donald Trump abruptly canceled a large rally here on Friday night as scuffles and shouting matches erupted on the arena floor between large groups of his supporters and protesters angered by his campaign.”

“Cable news networks broadcast live scenes of chaos inside the arena that showed people on both sides screaming at, punching and shoving each other. At one point a protester clambered onstage and stood behind the speaker’s podium ripping up a campaign sign until security pulled him away.”

Politico: “The moment revealed that hundreds of people had slipped into the event portraying themselves as Trump supporters. They instead unveiled protest banners, and some hoisted campaign signs for Bernie Sanders.”

“The three under consideration are Merrick Garland, chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit; Sri Srinivasan, a judge on the same court; and Paul Watford, a judge on the California-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit.”

Boehner’s Political World Crumbles

March 11, 2016 at 12:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 47 Comments

Wall Street Journal: “The party establishment Mr. Boehner helped build here and across the U.S. has been hit by a one-two punch of a conservative revolt, which began with the tea-party wave in 2010 and was followed by the collective frustration lifting Mr. Trump to within reach of the Republican presidential nomination.”

“Fifteen Republican candidates are battling in Tuesday’s Ohio primary for the right to compete for Mr. Boehner’s former seat, the state’s Eighth Congressional District. Many want to distance themselves from Mr. Boehner. None has the backslapper personality that once made him so popular in Congress.”

Trump Urges GOP to Unify Behind Him

March 11, 2016 at 9:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard 90 Comments

Donald Trump said he’s attracting people who are “voting out of love,” even as he finds himself defending new accusations of violence among his supporters and facing criticism for praising authoritarian leaders, USA Today reports.

Said Trump: “We’re taking people from the Democrat Party. We’re taking people as independents, and they’re all coming out and the whole world is talking about it. It’s very exciting. The Republican establishment, or whatever you want to call it, should embrace what’s happening. … Be smart and unify.”

Politico: “For Trump, it’s part of a pivot toward the general election, where he’d want the full might of the Republican Party behind him in a faceoff with the Democratic nominee.”

March 11, 2016 at 8:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard 119 Comments

Politico: “As a CNN senior political correspondent, host of his own podcast and Twitter junkie, David Axelrod has become Clinton’s backseat driver, quick to point out flaws and offer unsolicited advice.”

“In particular, Bill Clinton — often the easiest person to provoke when it comes to criticism of his wife—has been ‘very worked up about it,’ said a source close to the campaign.”

Cruz Mocks Trump’s Wealthy Upbringing

March 11, 2016 at 6:46 am EST By Taegan Goddard 19 Comments

Sen. Ted Cruz “appeared to take a veiled shot at Donald Trump’s upbringing in a wealthy household during the final moments of the Republican presidential debate Thursday night,” The Hill reports.

Said Cruz: “What an incredible nation we have that the son of a bartender, and the son of a mailman and the son of a dishwasher and a successful businessman can all stand on this stage, competing and asking for your support.”

Trump Repudiates Republican Policies

March 11, 2016 at 6:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard 54 Comments

New York Times: “Under determined questioning, Mr. Trump was finally forced to fill in some of the gaping blanks in his policy vision. The result was a broad rejection of core Republican priorities. He assailed free-trade agreements, pledged not to cut government benefits for retirees and defended taking a neutral stance in negotiations with Israel and the Palestinian Authority.”

“In a remark that could have come from a Ron Paul-style isolationist or a McGovern-style liberal, he answered a question about how to pay for Social Security by casting the country’s military presence overseas as a gigantic waste of resources.”
