“United States Special Operations commandos carried out a risky raid in northwestern Syria on Saturday against a senior terrorist leader there,” the New York Times reports.
“A senior American official said commandos and analysts were still seeking to confirm the identity of the terrorist… But a person close to President Trump and a senior American official said that the target of the raid was believed to be the leader of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.”
Washington Post: “If confirmed, Baghdadi’s death would bring a dramatic end to a years-long hunt for the man who spearheaded the Islamic State’s transformation from an underground insurgent band to a powerful quasi-state that straddled two countries and spawned copycat movements across continents.”
