Kevin McCarthy Suffers Defeat for a Eleventh Time

After an eleventh round of voting, the House failed once again to elect a speaker.

The vote totals for the eleventh round:

  • Hakeem Jeffries – 212
  • Kevin McCarthy – 200
  • Kevin Hern – 7
  • Donald Trump – 1
  • Other –12
  • Present – 1

Punchbowl News: “Allies of Kevin McCarthy have struck a tentative agreement with his conservative opponents. A draft of the prospective deal is being circulated this evening. Those involved in the negotiations say it will either convince McCarthy’s conservative opponents to support him or the California Republican’s candidacy will be further endangered.”

“A major showdown could come later tonight or tomorrow, after 11 rounds of voting has led to no breakthrough for McCarthy. Republicans have no plan at the moment to recess for the night.”

Goddard spent more than a decade as managing director and chief operating officer of a prominent investment firm in New York City. Previously, he was a policy adviser to a U.S. Senator and Governor.

Goddard is also co-author of You Won - Now What? (Scribner, 1998), a political management book hailed by prominent journalists and politicians from both parties. In addition, Goddard's essays on politics and public policy have appeared in dozens of newspapers across the country.

Goddard earned degrees from Vassar College and Harvard University. He lives in New York with his wife and three sons.
