September 2, 2025 at 4:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump boasted over the weekend that his tariffs — most of which an appellate court ruled illegal — had generated $8 trillion in new revenue.

That number isn’t just wrong. It’s impossible. Total U.S. imports last year were just $3.7 trillion.

Trump Will Seek ‘Expedited Ruling’ on Tariffs

September 2, 2025 at 3:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said Tuesday that he will ask the Supreme Court for an “expedited ruling” to overturn an appeals court decision that found most of his tariffs on imports from other countries are illegal, CNBC reports.

Said Trump: “If you take away tariffs, we could end up being a third-world country.”

He added: “The stock market’s down because of that, because the stock market needs the tariffs. They want the tariffs.”

Johnson Lays Groundwork to Blame Democrats

September 2, 2025 at 2:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Speaker Mike Johnson suggests it will be up to congressional Democrats to stave off a federal shutdown Oct. 1,” Politico reports.

Said Johnson: “The ball will be in their corner.”

“Hill Republicans are discussing a short-term stopgap punt ahead of the government funding deadline, which Republicans say will force Democrats to vote for the measure or be responsible for a shutdown. But rank-and-file Republicans, who tend to oppose continuing resolutions, are livid their own leaders don’t have a better plan.”

D.C. Police Close Criminal Probe Into GOP Lawmaker

September 2, 2025 at 2:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department closed an investigation into Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) that it launched after police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in February,” The Hill reports.

“The woman, originally identified as a significant other, who had called police to a luxury building in the Wharf neighborhood of D.C. later recanted her allegations, and Mills firmly denied there was a physical altercation. While police didn’t make an arrest at the scene, they opened a criminal probe into the matter.”

Trump Says Israel Has Lost Control of Congress

September 2, 2025 at 2:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said that Israel’s support in Congress and around the world has declined in recent years, Fox News reports.

Said Trump: “Israel, you would understand this very much, Israel was the strongest lobby I’ve ever seen. They had total control over Congress, and now they don’t, you know, I’m a little surprised to see that.”

What If Trump Died?

September 2, 2025 at 2:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Last: “If Trump is the sitting president… then the line of succession is clear. His vice president becomes president.”

“Of course, that’s not the end of the story. Georgy Malenkov was Stalin’s deputy and he assumed the premiership of the Soviet Union immediately following Stalin’s death.”

“But being handed the office of leadership is not the same has having control of a movement. Malenkov was a dullard and Nikita Khrushchev outmaneuvered him over the next 24 months, eventually ousting him from the Politburo.”

“If, just for the sake of argument, JD Vance was Trump’s vice president when he passed, I would not assume Vance to be anything more than a temporary leader of the Trumpist movement. That dude has Malenkov written all over him.”

Jeffrey Epstein Continues to Haunt GOP Leaders

September 2, 2025 at 1:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “It’s Day One of the post-summer session of Congress, and the House Republican leadership is already dealing with the Jeffrey Epstein issue it hoped to leave behind.”

“Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) announced he will file his discharge petition at 2 p.m., forcing the release of the Justice Department’s Epstein files. Members will be able to sign the petition beginning today.”

“If every House Democrat signs – which we expect – just six Republicans would be needed to force a vote on the measure. And that’s practically guaranteed to happen.”

“This would be a big blow to Speaker Mike Johnson and the House Republican leadership.”

The Permanent Shutdown Showdown

September 2, 2025 at 1:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The single most important task before lawmakers this month is passing the 12 annual spending bills that keep the government running after October 1.

Without them — or at least a stopgap measure — the government shuts down.

Black Bag Thrown Out of White House Window

September 2, 2025 at 12:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The White House says a video posted online on Monday of a black bag being heaved out of the White House showed maintenance work being done by a contractor, Time reports.

“The video… spread widely on social media, prompting jokes about White House security protocol and speculation about what was being thrown out. It shows a person wearing white pants stepping a foot out onto a windowsill on the second floor of the White House and tossing down what appears to be a black plastic bag. Later someone tosses something long and white out the window.”

“The second floor of the White House is where the President’s private residence is located.”

House Members Ready Action on Epstein Files

September 2, 2025 at 12:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House members are wasting no time laying the groundwork this week for a confrontation with GOP leaders over releasing the Jeffrey Epstein files,” Politico reports.

“Freshly back in Washington from the August recess, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) plans to take the formal steps at 2 p.m. today to file a discharge petition, the procedural maneuver necessary to bypass leadership and force a vote on his resolution compelling the DOJ to unseal the files related to the late, convicted sex offender.”

“Once he does that, Massie said in a social media post Tuesday morning, he can begin gathering the necessary 218 signatures required to bring the resolution to the floor.”
