White House Sharply Lowers Expectations for Summit

August 13, 2025 at 7:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump expects his encounter with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week to be a ‘listening exercise,’ White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday, sharply downplaying the possibility that a deal to end the war in Ukraine could be imminent despite a warning from the president last week that Kyiv needed to ‘get ready to sign something,’” the Washington Post reports.

“The lowered expectations for Friday’s meeting in Alaska came as Russia made significant battlefield gains in eastern Ukraine and appeared to be in little mood to offer concessions that might be necessary to achieve a durable halt in the fighting.”

Stock Market Brushes Off Trump’s Tariffs

August 13, 2025 at 7:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“At least for now, the U.S. stock market is on board with President Donald Trump’s increasingly aggressive use of executive power when it comes to tariffs,” NBC News reports.

“On Tuesday, major stock indexes hit fresh all-time highs as investors digested an inflation report that was mostly tamer than feared. While the details of the report suggest an overall mixed picture for the economy, it suggested fears of large immediate price increases from Trump’s tariffs may no longer be warranted.”

New York Times: Before Trump talks to Putin, Europe wants to bend his ear.

Axios: Zelensky scrambles to avert disaster as Trump meets Putin.

Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX) said he won’t run in a redrawn district that Republicans plan to gerrymander into a Trump +10 seat, teeing up a primary against Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Punchbowl News reports.

Trump’s BLS Pick Gets Panned by Economists

August 13, 2025 at 6:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s nomination of Heritage Foundation economist E.J. Antoni to head the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Monday drew criticism from economists across the political spectrum,” Axios reports.

“The growing negative consensus among conservative economists is unusual given Antoni’s own conservative pedigree.”

New York Times: “Economists across the political spectrum reacted with alarm to Dr. Antoni’s appointment — which must still be confirmed by the Senate — saying they worried he would politicize an agency long admired for providing straight-ahead facts on employment, inflation, wages and other critical economic subjects.”

Financial Times: Trump’s BLS pick sparks alarm.

August 13, 2025 at 6:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

August 13, 2025 at 6:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) wants to pick a fight with Donald Trump over government funding — even if his fellow Democrats don’t, Politico reports.

Said Murphy: “Every single day, there’s new evidence that our democracy is falling, and you’ve got to take stands. You have to take fights.”

MAGA Media Backs Up Trump

August 12, 2025 at 9:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Oliver Darcy: “The crime panic is nothing new for right-wing media. For years, it has been a reliable theme, a steady drumbeat of doom that portrays America’s cities as collapsing under the weight of lawlessness. A poll conducted by Gallup last year found that 64 percent of Americans believed that crime in the U.S. had increased over the past year, including 90 percent of Republicans.”

“In reality, violent crime has been trending downward nationally, and major metros like Los Angeles and New York are far safer than the nightly monologues would suggest. But accuracy isn’t the point. The target audience for this narrative largely doesn’t live in these cities, doesn’t visit them, and is primed to accept the caricature over the facts.”

Andy Beshear Wows Democrats at Big Donor Fundraiser

August 12, 2025 at 8:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Many Democrats left House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ annual California fundraising event last week convinced Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is running for president,” Axios reports.

“Democrats lapped up the message from the two-term governor, who told big dollar donors and vulnerable House Democrats that the key to winning over Trump voters is staying true to your values.”

Vogue: Andy Beshear has won (and won again) in Trump country. What’s next?

Two Fundamental Questions Will Shape 2026

August 12, 2025 at 8:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Amy Walter: “Even as the possibility of new maps in Texas and California may change the size and the shape of the 2026 playing field, the fate of the Republican-controlled House is ultimately still going to be determined by two fundamental questions: how do voters feel about the state of the economy, and how do independent voters assess the party in power?”

“Or, as Matthew Continetti put it in a recent column for Commentary magazine, Republicans’ ability to preserve their congressional majorities relies on ‘inflation and independents.’”

White House Suggests Jailing the Homeless

August 12, 2025 at 8:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House on Tuesday said homeless people in the nation’s capital could be subject to fines and jail time as the administration cracks down on crime,” The Hill reports.

Said press secretary Karoline Leavitt: “The homeless problem has ravaged the city.”

She added: “Homeless individuals will be given the option to leave their encampment, to be taken to a homeless shelter, to be offered addiction or mental health services, and if they refuse, they will be susceptible to fines or to jail time.”

Inside Senate Democrats’ Summer Warpath

August 12, 2025 at 8:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Democrats held more than 100 events railing against Republican policies in the first week of their summer recess, part of a coordinated push to drive down GOP approval ahead of the 2026 midterms,” Axios reports.

“Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) deployed similar tactics on the campaign trail last year, when his Democrats significantly outperformed the rest of the party in the general election.”

“Schumer wants his caucus to localize the impact of policies Trump and the Republican Congress have embraced in Washington — specifically cuts to health care, tariffs, rising energy costs and tax cuts for the wealthy.”

Trump’s Show of Force Begins to Take Shape

August 12, 2025 at 8:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“National Guard troops began to deploy in Washington on Tuesday evening as President Trump’s plan to use the federal government to crack down on crime in the city started taking shape,” the New York Times reports.

“About a dozen members of the National Guard appeared in five military vehicles near the Washington Monument as the sun set, a stark juxtaposition to a peaceful evening scene of people jogging by with headphones and walking their dogs. They declined to answer a reporter’s questions about their mission and about how long they would be there, with one saying he had been instructed not to.”
