The Trump Family Cashes In First

August 24, 2025 at 7:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When President Trump gets in on a new online moneymaking idea, his followers often pile in—but two out of the last three times, they went on to lose bigly,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Now the first family is trying again and the idea, at least, is intriguing. Unfortunately for fans, the Trump venture into a ‘crypto treasury’ stock is also set up so the president and his family cash in first.”

“The president’s ventures have so far been a disaster for investors who were slightly late to buy into them.”

A Rising Risk for the U.S. Economy

August 24, 2025 at 7:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The labor market has moved front and center for the Federal Reserve, highlighting its fragility and risk to the economy,” the Wall Street Journal reports

“The good news is that unemployment remains low, and employers haven’t been all that interested in laying people off. The bad news is that companies haven’t been all that interested in hiring, either.”

“This precarious situation means even a relatively small increase in layoffs could lead the economy to start shedding jobs—a process that can be difficult to reverse once it starts.”

Most Americans Back Mail In Voting

August 24, 2025 at 7:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

More than half of Americans supported allowing no-excuse mail-in voting in a Pew Research Center poll despite President Trump’s promise to end the practice he denounced as “fraudulent.”

A 58% majority, including 83% of Democrats and 32% of Republicans, supported mail-in voting.

House Freedom Caucus Is Under Renovation

August 24, 2025 at 6:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After more than a decade of upending life under the Capitol dome, leading members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus have decided their fortunes would be better in their state capitals,” the Washington Post reports.

“Four of the most prominent archconservatives in that caucus have said they are running for statewide office, the latest being Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), who announced Thursday he will run for state attorney general.”

“Roy followed Reps. Andy Biggs (Arizona), Byron Donalds (Florida) and Ralph Norman (South Carolina) in saying they will run for the GOP nomination for governor in their states. They depart at a time when the Freedom Caucus’s swagger and negotiating credibility on Capitol Hill have taken a hit.”

The New Swing Voter

August 24, 2025 at 6:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ron Brownstein: “Earlier in the 21st century, the dominant view among experts was that swing voters — those who might switch their party preference between elections — were all but extinct. Even today, the number of people who reliably turn out to vote but also regularly flip their votes between parties remains very modest by historical standards.”

“Yet strategists in both parties believe a new kind of swing voter has emerged as the total number of voters has dramatically increased in the past decade. Today’s key swing voters are the many Americans who cycle in and out of the electorate, casting a ballot in some elections but not others.”

Trump’s Next Fight With Universities

August 24, 2025 at 6:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After months of targeting universities over antisemitism allegations, the Trump administration is turning to a new focus: whether schools are using proxies for race in admissions to diversify student bodies,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“This emphasis is emerging in recent edicts from federal agencies and in the White House’s scrutiny of specific universities.”

Most Californians Disapprove of Trump’s Deportations

August 24, 2025 at 6:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Most California voters strongly disapprove of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies and believe that raids in the state have unfairly targeted Latinos, according to a new poll,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“The findings, released Sunday, reflected striking emotional reactions to immigration enforcement. When voters were asked to describe their feelings about news reports or videos of immigration raids, 64% chose rage or sadness ‘because what is happening is unfair.’”

Epstein Files Sent to Congress Were Already Public

August 23, 2025 at 10:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The ‘overwhelming majority’ of documents the Justice Department gave Congress in response to a subpoena for all information from its investigation into the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein had already been publicly released, the top Democrat on the House’s principal investigative committee said on Saturday,” the New York Times reports.

GOP Lawmakers Are Privately Bashing Trump’s Tariffs

August 23, 2025 at 10:48 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “It is a tough spot for these Republican lawmakers to be in. Criticism of the president’s policies could earn a public rebuke from the White House. But embracing the new duties could be politically risky: Voters disapprove of the president’s handling of the economy, inflation, and tariffs.”

U.S. Has Quietly Blocked Ukraine’s Long-Range Missiles

August 23, 2025 at 10:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Pentagon has for months been blocking Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles to strike inside Russia, limiting Kyiv from employing a powerful weapon in its fight against Moscow’s invasion,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Trump Plans Military Deployment in Chicago

August 23, 2025 at 9:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Pentagon has for weeks been planning a military deployment to Chicago as President Donald Trump seeks to crack down on crime, homelessness and undocumented immigration, in a model that could later be used in other major cities,“ the Washington Post reports.

“The Chicago effort would further expand Trump’s use of military force domestically, even when state and local authorities call the idea unwelcome and unwarranted. Administration officials have defended such deployments, arguing that they are taking necessary steps to bring back law and order.”

Feds Looking Into John Bolton’s Private Email Server

August 23, 2025 at 3:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The FBI raid of John Bolton’s home and office are part of a probe over allegations that he sent “highly sensitive” classified documents to his family from a private email server while working in the White House, the New York Post reports.

President Trump told reporters Bolton is “not a smart guy, but he could be a very unpatriotic guy… We’re going to find out.”

Scientists Scrub Diversity From Research

August 23, 2025 at 2:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Scientists are removing words like “diverse” and “disparities” from hundreds of federal grant renewals to avoid getting flagged in the Trump administration’s focus on eliminating diversity, equity and inclusion programs, a Wall Street Journal analysis shows.

Melania Trump Remains Privately Influential

August 23, 2025 at 11:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “The first lady is rarely seen publicly. She did not accompany her husband when he delivered her letter to President Vladimir Putin during last week’s summit in Anchorage, nor was she present at the White House days later when he hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders. She’s made public appearances just 19 days so far this term, compared to 40 at this point during the previous. Her East Wing staff this time around is a fraction of her first-term team and that of her predecessors.”

“But Trump is in frequent communication with her husband, often in texts or calls exchanged throughout the day, according to sources familiar with the matter. And much like her husband, the first lady consumes a steady diet of news coverage. By Donald Trump’s account, Melania Trump has provided a healthy dose of skepticism after previous conversations with Putin.”

Quote of the Day

August 23, 2025 at 6:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I’ll see whose fault it is. If there are reasons why, I’ll understand that. I know exactly what I’m doing. We’re gonna see whether or not they have a meeting. That’ll be interesting to see. And if they don’t, why didn’t they have a meeting? Because I told them to have a meeting. But I’ll know in two weeks what I’m gonna do.”

— Donald Trump, quoted by Mediaite, on ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

Far-Right Agenda Enters the Mainstream

August 23, 2025 at 6:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“During President Trump’s first turn in the White House, right-wing extremists like the Proud Boys were on the streets, weekend after weekend, raising their voices — and oftentimes their fists — about issues such as immigration, the squelching of conservative speech and the removal of Confederate-era statues,” the New York Times reports.

“But in the first seven months of Mr. Trump’s second term, there has been a conspicuous absence of far-right demonstrations. And that, some leaders of the movement say, is because the president has effectively adopted their agenda.”
