U.S. Still Waiting for Iran’s Response

May 10, 2026 at 7:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The wait stretched on for Iran’s response to a US proposal to end 10 weeks of war, as the world’s largest oil company warned it would take months for the market to return to normal even if the Strait of Hormuz reopened immediately,” Bloomberg reports.

“As of early Sunday, the Islamic Republic had given no public indication it would accept President Donald Trump’s plan that stipulates Iran permits passage through the crucial waterway and Washington ends its blockade on Iranian ports in the next month.”

Trump Muses on His Successor

May 10, 2026 at 6:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Every now and then, while talking to officials in the Oval Office, with friends over dinner, or on the patio at Mar a Lago, President Trump pauses and muses aloud about a subject quietly captivating the Republican Party,” the New York Times reports.

“What do you think? JD or Marco?”

“According to multiple people close to the president, Mr. Trump asks advisers who they prefer, before frequently musing that he should just have Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio run together on the same presidential ticket in 2028.”

Virginia Democrats Are Forced to Play Musical Chairs

May 10, 2026 at 6:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The whiplash for the Virginia Democrats running for Congress was swift and intense after the state Supreme Court struck down the new congressional map proposed in February to flip four Republican-held seats.”

“With the stroke of a pen in Richmond, some campaigns effectively went poof, other candidates suddenly were in far tougher districts and one went from on the verge of dropping out to gearing up for a long-shot battle in a deep-red part of the state.
Image”

“Rarely have so many fully formed campaigns gone off the rails at once. The court’s shock decision on Friday dashed Democratic hopes of providing some balance to Republican-run states that have been eliminating Democratic seats since Texas kicked off a nationwide fight last year.”

Rapid Changes in Power Is the New Normal

May 10, 2026 at 6:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ron Brownstein: “If Democrats flip either chamber, it will continue the extraordinary run of volatility that has seen control of the House, the Senate or the White House change hands between the parties in 11 of the 13 elections since 2000. By contrast, control of either congressional chamber or the White House flipped in just five of the final 13 elections of the 20th century and only seven of the last 20 stretching back to 1960.”

“Each time voters recoil against the party in power, political analysts usually focus on the immediate choices made by the president and his party in Congress. But the pattern of rapid reversals has become so entrenched that it appears driven less by tactical decisions than by deeper forces in the economy, society and the electorate that show no sign of abating.”

The Election Deniers Who Could Become Governor

May 10, 2026 at 6:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Political figures who took leading roles in trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election appear on track to win the Republican Party’s nomination for governor in several of the country’s biggest battleground states, including Arizona, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin,” the Washington Post reports.

“Their prominence shows how President Donald Trump’s baseless claims that the election was stolen have become an article of faith within the Republican Party, more than five years after he lost to Joe Biden. And it means victories in this year’s midterm elections would give Trump supporters who were central to his efforts to overturn the election key oversight roles in the 2028 presidential election, for which states hold main authority.”

Many Politicians Struggle with Messy Digital Footprint

May 10, 2026 at 6:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “With a new generation of candidates who were active on X, Reddit and YouTube years before announcing political careers, it’s unsurprising that so many are seeing their past statements come back to haunt them…”

“Opposition researchers have never had more content to draw from. Yet they say that voters also seem more willing than ever to forgive past unsavory viewpoints and social media misdeeds — spurred in part by President Trump, who has proved that voters can overlook outrageous statements.”

Trump Official Made Policy That Benefited Her Family Ranch

May 9, 2026 at 10:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A top Trump appointee at the Interior Department acknowledged that she has been involved in changes to grazing policies that benefit ranching businesses like her family’s, according to a video of her remarks — a claim that some ethics experts say could violate federal law,” the Washington Post reports.

Israel Built and Defended Secret Iran War Base in Iraq

May 9, 2026 at 4:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Israel set up a clandestine military outpost in the Iraqi desert to support its air campaign against Iran and launched airstrikes against Iraqi troops who almost discovered it early in the war, people familiar with the matter including U.S. officials said.”

“Israel built the installation, which housed special forces and served as a logistical hub for the Israeli air force, just before the war started with the knowledge of the U.S.”

What the Transportation Secretary Has Been Up To

May 9, 2026 at 11:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Intelligencer: “What’s stopping you from celebrating America’s 250th birthday by loading your whole family in the car and road-tripping across this great nation? Work obligations? A boss who won’t let you come and go as you please? The fact that gas now costs more than $4.50 a gallon?”

“Or do you just need a little inspiration?”

“Well, don’t worry, Transportation secretary Sean Duffy is here to help! Not by, like, doing anything to lower fuel costs, but by sharing a family road-trip reality TV show he’s been filming over the past seven months.”

“Friday on Fox & Friends, the secretary and his wife, Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy, revealed that they celebrated the semiquincentennial by traveling the country with their nine children. And they filmed the whole adventure for a reality series called The Great American Road Trip, which launches on YouTube next month.”

Republicans Are Building an Advantage in Redistricting

May 9, 2026 at 11:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Cohn: “If everything stays as is — and with Alabama, South Carolina and Louisiana enacting new maps — Republicans will obtain a significant structural advantage. To win the House, Democrats could need to win the House combined national popular vote by around four percentage points, according to our estimates.”

“A four-point structural advantage wouldn’t be enough to make the Republicans favorites to win the House, but it gives them a real shot at it. In polling averages, Democrats lead by six points on the so-called generic congressional ballot, which asks voters which party they’ll support for Congress. But if Republicans make gains between now and November or pull off enough victories in key races, they could have a chance to retain control of the House even while losing the national vote by a significant margin.”

“A different way to consider the Republican advantage is to look at the kinds of seats they would need to win. Here, the most popular measure is the median congressional district — the district that would serve as a tipping point for House control. By this measure — after the Southern states redraw their maps — the median district will have voted for Mr. Trump by 5.5 points in 2024, or about four points more Republican than his 1.5-point margin in the 2024 national popular vote.”

Six Months Out from the Midterms

May 9, 2026 at 9:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

I joined John Ellis on the News Items podcast for a wide-ranging conversation about the state of American politics.

We talked about Donald Trump’s sinking approval numbers, Democratic momentum heading into the midterms, the races that could determine control of the Senate and the political backlash building around AI data centers.

We also looked ahead to the future of the Republican party after Trump — and whether someone not yet on the radar could define the 2028 presidential race.

The discussion was part campaign analysis, part media conversation and part political shop talk. You can listen here:

Bonus Quote of the Day

May 9, 2026 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“They assume my ambition is a title or a seat. My ambition is way bigger than that. My ambition is to change this country. Presidents come and go, elected officials come and go, single payer healthcare is forever.”

— Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), speaking at the University of Chicago.

EU Flag Back on Hungarian Parliament

May 9, 2026 at 8:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The newly appointed speaker of Hungary’s parliament ordered the EU flag be hung back on the building on Saturday, May 9, ending its long absence under nationalist Viktor Orban, who was voted from power on April 12,” Le Monde reports.

Trump’s Team Expands Redistricting Push

May 9, 2026 at 8:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump and top aides are pressuring Republican leaders in South Carolina and other Southern states to pursue mid-decade redistricting plans after the Supreme Court weakened the Voting Rights Act,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“White House officials have been met with notes of caution about redistricting in the Palmetto State, which is a major focus of the push, including from Republican Gov. Henry McMaster and GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham. That has prompted Trump officials to place calls to multiple Republican state senators to urge action on redistricting.”

“Trump officials have also called GOP officials in Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama and Tennessee in support of redistricting… making the case that the issue remains important to the president.”

Susan Collins Won’t Say If She Backs Trump’s Ballroom

May 9, 2026 at 8:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) ducked a question on whether she supports a move from her fellow Republicans to use $1 billion in public money for security-related aspects of President Trump’s White House ballroom project, the Portland Press Herald reports.

Quote of the Day

May 9, 2026 at 8:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“We cut drug prices by 90%. You could say 500%, 600% depending on the way you phrase the statement.”

— President Trump, in a speech at the White House.

Trump Is ‘Bored’ With the War He Started

May 9, 2026 at 8:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Lemire: “Trump is tired of the war, which has proved far more difficult and lasted far longer than he had expected. His party is warily watching rising gas prices and falling poll numbers. He doesn’t want to be bogged down in a Middle East conflict like some of his predecessors were. He doesn’t want it to upend his high-stakes summit next week in China. He is ready to move on.”

“But Iran, it seems, does not want the war to come to a close. Or at least not with any sort of outcome that could be acceptable to American negotiators. Trump is now in a bind. The president, five aides and outside advisers told me, is convinced that he can sell any sort of agreement as a win. But at least for now, the man who wrote The Art of the Deal can’t even get Iran to the negotiating table.”
