Trump Signs Order Shrinking National Monuments

July 14, 2026 at 10:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump signed an executive order drastically shrinking the size of two national monument areas in Utah on Monday,” Fox News reports.

“The order applies to the Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears national monuments, shrinking their total coverage by roughly 90% from 3 million acres to 300,000. The areas were established as federal monuments by President Bill Clinton in 1996 and Barack Obama in 2016 respectively.”

Said Trump: “They took the land from the people quite honestly. We’re giving it back.”

GOP Divided Over Honoring Lindsey Graham’s Legacy

July 14, 2026 at 9:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The late Sen. Lindsey Graham was known as a champion of American military power, strong global alliances, conservative jurisprudence and more,” Politico reports.

“Cryptocurrency regulation? Not so much.”

“So when President Donald Trump suggested in a Truth Social post Monday that the Senate should pass a long-brewing crypto bill in ‘honor of Senator Lindsey Graham,’ it struck a false note to many lawmakers. It also underscored how quickly many in Washington are moving after the Republican senator’s death Saturday to claim his mantle for their own purposes.”

CNBC: Trump calls for Congress to pass Clarity Act crypto bill to honor Lindsey Graham.

Warsh to Reiterate Fed’s Pledge to Get Inflation Down

July 14, 2026 at 9:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Kevin M. Warsh is set to reiterate his commitment to bringing down inflation at his first congressional hearing since becoming chairman of the Federal Reserve,” the New York Times reports.

”However, he has yet to indicate whether he supports higher interest rates to achieve that goal.”

Trump Struggles to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

July 14, 2026 at 9:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump has been trying to force Iran to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz for months, turning to everything from airstrikes and naval blockades to negotiations and threats to destroy a ‘whole civilization.'” CBS News reports.

“But restoring oil tanker traffic in the vital Middle East shipping corridor to prewar flows likely will require a much bigger armada of U.S. warships if not tens of thousands of American troops on Iranian soil, experts say. Despite on-and-off fighting, Iran can still target vessels in the slim Persian Gulf waterway with drones and missiles that have been hidden in a country a third the size of the continental United States.”

Bloomberg: Trump says U.S. will end up controlling Strait of Hormuz.

Alito and Thomas May Think They’re Irreplaceable

July 14, 2026 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Despite an erroneous report from one of the Supreme Court’s most respected correspondents, the long-anticipated retirement of a conservative justice still hasn’t happened.

For months, the assumption has been that Justices Clarence Thomas or Samuel Alito — perhaps both — would step down while Republicans still control the White House and the Senate.

Suddenly, Hormuz Is Less Crucial Than It Was

July 14, 2026 at 8:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Krugman: “Are we back at war with Iran? Did the war ever stop? The U.S. is, once again, bombing Iran while Iranian drones strike shipping. Iran, giddy with its success in defying America, is demanding sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, while Donald Trump is saying no, he owns the Strait and will collect 20 percent tolls.”

“Folks, this is bad. U.S. national security policy is now entirely in the service of one man’s vanity. We got into this mess because Trump thought he could win an easy victory that would let him strut around feeling powerful. Now we can’t get out because he won’t admit that his war has been a humiliating failure.”

“The good news is that Trump’s temper tantrum will probably do less economic damage than one might have expected — because the cease-fire that is apparently over wasn’t doing as much good as one might have expected. The fact is that there is now a disconnect between events in the Strait of Hormuz and the energy prices that matter. This disconnect is coming from a surprising place, another war that was supposed to yield a quick, easy victory but didn’t: Vladimir Putin’s attempt to conquer Ukraine.”

Rob Sand Could Break Iowa’s GOP Governor Streak

July 14, 2026 at 8:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“With President Trump’s approval ratings languishing and Democratic candidates polling well, Rob Sand, Iowa’s state auditor, could become the state’s first Democratic governor in 16 years after November’s election,” the New York Times reports.

“Yet as governor, Mr. Sand would be unable to block Republican priorities if the GOP wins a supermajority in the state legislature. Republicans would have the numbers to override any of his vetoes, as Govs. Laura Kelly of Kansas and Andy Beshear of Kentucky, both Democratic leaders in Republican states, know all too well.”

“So Democrats are leaning on a handful of moderate newcomers — bolstered by outside money — to flip several districts in November, and influence the balance of power in a state that has gone from consummate battleground to ruby red over the past decade.”

Inflation Eases as Prices Post Sharp Drop

July 14, 2026 at 8:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Consumer prices posted their biggest decline in more than six years during June as a sharp swoon in energy prices provided at least temporary relief from this year’s inflation surge, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday,” CNBC reports.

Georgia Lt. Gov. Won’t Commit to Backing Rick Jackson

July 14, 2026 at 8:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones (R) still isn’t ready to rally behind billionaire Rick Jackson’s (R) bid for governor, Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“In his first interview since his defeat in the Republican runoff, Jones wouldn’t say whether he would even vote for Jackson in November and warned that the party’s nominee must repair a fractured GOP foundation before turning to the broader electorate.”

Said Jones: “We’ll see. Obviously, I’m interested in supporting and keeping Georgia Republican-run and keeping it red. And I think November is going to be a challenge.”

“The remarkable answer underscored the fallout from one of the most vicious Republican primaries in recent Georgia history and raised fresh questions about whether Jackson can reunite the party ahead of a difficult November matchup against Democratic nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms.”

The Race to Become the Democratic Left’s Next Power Firm

July 14, 2026 at 8:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Behind a string of recent leftist victories in Democratic primaries across the country is a growing ecosystem of progressive media consulting firms and strategists positioning themselves ahead of a wide-open 2028 presidential cycle,” NOTUS reports.

“One of those firms, Middle Seat, has quietly racked up a string of victories by working with what have turned out to be some of the highest-profile names to come out of this year’s primaries.”

McConnell Photo Fails to Quell Doubts

July 14, 2026 at 7:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office released a photo Sunday night in an effort to answer weeks of questions about his health. In it, the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican smiles beside his wife, Elaine Chao, while holding what appears to be that day’s Washington Post Sports section,” the Washington Post reports.

“But the image did not end the speculation about McConnell’s condition. Instead, it prompted more theories and even accusations that the image was fake, the latest test of public trust in the age of artificial intelligence.”

Oil Rises Above $85 a Barrel as Gulf Clash Escalates

July 14, 2026 at 7:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Oil prices continued to climb on Tuesday, hitting their highest levels in a month, as an escalating pattern of strikes and counter strikes between the United States and Iran rattled markets,” the New York Times reports.

War Has Changed the Middle East Forever

July 14, 2026 at 7:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The always unconvincing ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran is all but dead,” Bloomberg reports.

“What is indisputable is that the geopolitics of the Middle East have been indelibly changed by the Oct. 7 attack on Israel that triggered a series of once unthinkable events, culminating in the U.S.-led war on Iran that is reshaping the power dynamics in one of the world’s most volatile regions.”

“The map of the Middle East as we know it has been redrawn in real time, in the more than 1,000 days that have passed since Hamas terrorists crossed over into Israel from the Gaza Strip and massacred more than 1,200 people. Alliances have been severely tested, and some will never be the same again.”

Republicans Eye Huge Pentagon Boost for Iran War

July 14, 2026 at 6:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “How’s this for election-year governing?”

“With the political winds howling in their face, House Republicans are gearing up to send the Pentagon tens of billions of dollars in new funding for a seemingly endless Iran war that’s bottoming out in public opinion polls.”

“The new Pentagon money may not be offset by spending cuts elsewhere, serving up echoes of the Middle East conflicts that raged during George W. Bush’s presidency. Those wars dogged Republicans for years.”

Said House Budget chair Jodey Arrington (R-TX): “We haven’t made any of those decisions yet.”

Democrats Lead by 26 Points Among ‘Double Haters’

July 14, 2026 at 6:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

G. Elliot Morris: “In our June Strength In Numbers/Verasight poll, we asked 2,000 Americans to rate both parties on a 0-to-100 ‘feeling thermometer’ scale (where 0 represents ‘cold’ and 100 ‘warm’ toward a figure/party), and about one in five registered voters put both parties below 50.”

“This is the group we’ll call the ‘double haters’ for the midterms, though note it’s slightly different from the 2016/2020/2024 definitions that compare favorability of presidential candidates, not parties…”

“Our poll shows double haters favor Democrats for 2026 by 26 points, 55% to 29%, while everyone else splits about evenly: Democrats lead by 2 among voters who like at least one party. If you do the math on the generic ballot, currently around D+7 in our poll, this means that double haters are responsible for about 80% of the party’s national margin.”

Trump Demands $30 Million Fee per Oil Tanker

July 14, 2026 at 6:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump just threw out a demand of a 20% reimbursement on cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz, or roughly $30 million on full supertankers carrying oil,” Bloomberg reports.

“That’s based on current oil prices of about $80 per barrel. Supertankers can hold about 2 million barrels of crude.”

“In contrast, Iran had been charging as much as $2 million per voyage on an adhoc basis.”

New York Times: Trump’s plan to charge a toll in the Strait of Hormuz: what to know.

Trump Is ‘Very Serious’ About Hormuz Toll Push

July 14, 2026 at 6:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump is ‘very serious’ about his plan to impose a 20% toll on cargo transiting through the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that it’s a plan he’s wanted to move forward with for months,” Semafor reports.

“The president has long flirted with the idea of charging a toll, wondering back in April ‘why shouldn’t’ his administration do so and threatening to impose fees in June if a deal with Iran was not completed within a 60-day period. But Trump doesn’t always follow through with his musings, and until this week, he resisted formally announcing that plan — in part due to opposition from some in his orbit.”

Bloomberg: Trump says U.S. will be reimbursed 20% rate for Hormuz traffic.

Iran Plays by Trump’s Rules to Deepen His War Dilemma

July 14, 2026 at 6:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iran seems to be playing Donald Trump at his own game,” CNN reports.

“The president complained Monday that the Islamic Republic can’t be trusted to honor an agreement, rebuking its rulers for one of his own signature moves.”

“‘It was a done deal, and then they broke it. They always break it,’ he told Fox News of the memorandum of understanding that briefly paused the war. Trump did not seem to appreciate the irony of his critique, given his habit of walking out on multiple international agreements, including the Paris Climate Accord (twice). Some critics would trace America’s current predicament to Trump’s first-term decision to scrap the Obama-era deal capping Iran’s nuclear program.”
