February 12, 2023 at 5:00 pm EST By Peter Orvetti Leave a Comment

On Wednesday, Nikki Haley will join Donald Trump as an officially declared Republican presidential candidate, and will spend the next days in New Hampshire before heading to Iowa next weekend. By daring to be the first to formally challenge Trump, Haley makes it easier for Ron DeSantis to continue to lie low and hope Haley deflects some of Trump’s fire. But will her entry spur other contenders with longer odds to get in soon to grab the spotlight, or to continue to delay and let Haley take all the hits?

Another possible GOP candidate, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, will travel to DeSantis’s home state of Florida on Thursday to address a Republican group.

The Week Ahead

February 5, 2023 at 5:12 pm EST By Peter Orvetti Leave a Comment

The balloon was shot down, but it will continue to hover above Washington politics this week, possibly even eclipsing President Biden’s Tuesday evening State of the Union address.

The President, with an eye toward 2024, intends to focus on the resilience of the economy — with inflation rates plummeting and unemployment remaining low — but tense relations with China could steal his thunder. It’s déjà vu for Biden, whose SOTU last year came just days after Russia invaded Ukraine.

January 29, 2023 at 5:00 pm EST By Peter Orvetti Leave a Comment

The Phoney War for the Republican presidential nomination continues. Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Larry Hogan, Mike Pence, and Mike Pompeo have all been making moves toward entering the race — some less quietly than others, but all with caution so far.

But the race is slowly starting to begin in earnest, with Donald Trump making his first appearances in leadoff primary states, and Trump stating that Haley told him she is likely to run. Each of the five, as well as some others, seem to be waiting for someone else to be the first to jump in and draw Trump’s ire and fire. Could this be the week?

January 22, 2023 at 5:51 pm EST By Peter Orvetti Leave a Comment

The Republican National Committee will gather in Dana Point, California, to choose between Harmeet Dhillon, Mike Lindell, and current chair Ronna McDaniel to lead the party for the next two years. Though McDaniel says more than 100 of the 168 voting RNC members are behind her, and Dhillon publicly claims just 28 backers, the campaign has been bitter and personal.

Donald Trump, who has done little since declaring his 2024 presidential candidacy more than two months ago, will travel to South Carolina on Saturday for his first major public event of the campaign. But while Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) — who once called Trump a “race-baiting, xenophobic bigot” and said the GOP should tell Trump “to go to hell” — will attend to offer Trump a de facto endorsement, other major Palmetto State Republicans like Nikki Haley and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) are considering their own presidential bids.
