Trump Wins Even By Losing

May 18, 2022 at 10:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The political news this morning is swamped with stories on Donald Trump’s influence and whether it’s solidifying or waning based on individual primary results from last night.

But that completely misses the point.

What’s Worrying Americans?

May 17, 2022 at 10:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A recent Pew Research survey mirrors most other polls that show inflation as the dominant concern of most Americans with a decisive 93% saying it’s a “very big” or “moderately big” problem.

But what’s striking is what Americans are no longer worried about: the coronavirus pandemic. Of the 12 issues ranked in order of public concern, Covid-19 was dead last.

Down to the Wire In Pennsylvania

May 16, 2022 at 3:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senate race got another plot twist over the weekend as Lt. Gov. John Fetterman (D) suffered a stroke.

There’s probably not enough time for Conor Lamb (D) to make up lost ground in the Democratic primary, but expect Fetterman’s health to be a topic in the general election — even though he says he’ll make a complete recovery.

The Best Communicator In the Biden Administration

May 16, 2022 at 11:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Biden administration was caught flat-footed last week on the baby formula shortage across the country.

President Biden made matters worse when he suggested to reporters that he needed special powers to handle the crisis:

Changing How We Talk About Abortion

May 12, 2022 at 2:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

After nearly 50 years, Democrats supporting abortion rights want their allies to modernize their rhetoric when talking about abortion.

The biggest change is using the word “decision” instead of “choice.”

Chuck Schumer Botches a Vote on Abortion

May 12, 2022 at 11:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

If Democrats are to make abortion a major issue in the midterm elections, they’ll need to make it rise above the issues Republicans would prefer to talk about, like inflation and immigration.

But in holding a show vote in the Senate yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) botched it badly. He couldn’t even get a majority — let alone the 60 votes needed to proceed under Senate rules.

How Democrats Can Beat Midterm Expectations

May 11, 2022 at 11:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

By nearly every historical marker, the upcoming midterm elections should be very rough for Democrats.

But there are at least two polling anomalies worth watching:

Being Anti-Science Is Now Part of the GOP Identity

May 10, 2022 at 10:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The advances in science and technology over our lifetimes are awe-inspiring. But unfortunately not everyone feels that way.

“In a 2021 paper published in American Political Science Review, political scientists David Barker, Ryan Detamble and Morgan Marietta looked at Republicans’ growing distrust of scientists and other experts,” FiveThirtyEight reports.

A Wildcard In Pennsylvania’s GOP Senate Race

May 6, 2022 at 2:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump heads to Pennsylvania for a rally tonight on behalf of Mehmet Oz (R) in his increasingly nasty battle with David McCormick (R) for the GOP Senate nomination. He’s even bringing J.D. Vance — who prevailed in Ohio’s Republican Senate primary this week — for inspiration.

Oz holds a small lead in the latest Trafalgar Group poll but is increasingly on the defensive after an ABC News report that he cast a ballot in Turkey’s 2018 presidential election.

A Few Thoughts for the End of the Week

May 6, 2022 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The predecessor to Political Wire was called Political Insider, a morning briefing on politics published in the run up to the 2000 presidential election.

The technology was quite different then. At 4 a.m. my computer automatically dialed up to get on the internet and ran a program to download and save dozens of news stories. I read these on the commuter train into New York City each morning and compiled them into the daily briefing, (along with contributions from my friend and co-author, Chris Riback.) The site was published when I got into the office and could get back on the internet.

Let Us Count the Scandals

May 5, 2022 at 12:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

I’m quite certain there’s never been a congressman involved in as many scandals as Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC).

Here are the illegal — or potentially illegal — things he’s been accused of:

How Abortion Could Help Democrats Keep the Senate

May 4, 2022 at 4:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

If abortion becomes a major issue in the midterm elections, it has the potential to dramatically impact the race for control of the U.S. Senate.

Courtesy of the New York Times, here’s the net support for abortion rights in each of the battleground states with important Senate races:

Trump May Have Cost Republicans a House Seat Last Night

May 4, 2022 at 1:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

There’s little doubt that Donald Trump’s endorsement of J.D. Vance (R) in Ohio’s U.S. Senate primary led to his victory last night.

But another race might be an even better example of Trump’s influence in the Buckeye State — and it could cost Republicans.

How We Got Here Is Just as Important

May 3, 2022 at 12:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Julia Ioffe, who is one of my favorite journalists, tweeted this just after the draft Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked last night:

The focus on the fact of the leak—rather than the dismantling of women’s reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy—is so very Washington. Process over substance. Horse race over issues. It’s one of the many ways we got to this exact moment.

The Supreme Court Leak Was Probably by Conservatives

May 3, 2022 at 11:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Because draft rulings from the Supreme Court don’t normally leak, it’s very interesting to see the reaction the morning after.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) — perhaps not coincidentally picking up on a rant last night from Laura Ingraham, who once clerked for Justice Clarence Thomas — called the leak “an attack on the independence of the Supreme Court” which he blamed on the “radical left.”

Racism No Longer Carries Any Stigma

We’re obviously undergoing a seismic shift in our politics.

But nothing signifies how much our politics has changed than a photo tweeted out by Tucker Carlson yesterday afternoon:
