A Few Thoughts for the End of the Week

July 22, 2022 at 10:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The January 6 Committee hearings have been brilliant.

Using testimony almost exclusively from Republicans, the committee has focused the narrative on how Donald Trump and his allies worked to undermine our democracy, while also filling in many relevant and fascinating new details of what happened leading up to that day.

Reaction to the January 6 Hearing – Part II

July 21, 2022 at 10:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

There will never be a moment when I’m not enraged by what happened on January 6th.

Tonight’s hearing was especially infuriating. There have to be consequences for Donald Trump. It’s imperative if our democracy is to continue. It’s necessary if we’re to remain a free nation.

Reaction to the January 6 Hearing – Part I

July 21, 2022 at 9:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The January 6 Committee hearing tonight provided a moment-by-moment accounting of the 187 minutes between when the Capitol insurrection began to when Donald Trump released a video on Twitter finally urging the rioters to stand down.

Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) noted that previous hearings showed how Trump “commanded a mob — a mob he knew was heavily armed and angry and he made targets out of his own Vice President and the lawmakers gathered to do the people’s work.”

A Very Powerful House Vote

July 20, 2022 at 11:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

I’m generally not a fan of messaging bills because they’re constructed not to actually change public policy but instead to emphasize the views of incumbents to their constituents before an election.

But that wasn’t the case yesterday with the House vote to codify the right for gay couples to marry. While it may have started out as a messaging exercise, it quickly became much more powerful than that.

Why This Election Is Tougher to Predict

July 19, 2022 at 5:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The recent polls from CNN/SRSS and New York Times/Siena both show that Democrats on the generic congressional ballot are winning 19% of voters who also disapprove of President Biden.

In the 2018 midterm elections, Republican candidates won just 8% of voters who also disapproved of Donald Trump.

Who’s to Blame for Derailing Biden’s Agenda?

July 18, 2022 at 10:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

On Thursday, a trimmed-down version of a trimmed-down version of what was once a massive budget reconciliation proposal will begin to make its way through the Senate’s budgetary process.

The proposal now includes prescription drug reform — something Democrats have been promising for years — as well as a funding extension for the Affordable Care Act.

An Early House Projection

July 15, 2022 at 2:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Just for members: The latest edition of Inside Elections.

This edition includes an early House projection — Republicans are likely to gain between 12-30 seats in the midterm elections — along with updated gubernatorial ratings in four states, and the latest Senate race polling.

The issue also includes a deep dive into Virginia’s 7th congressional district, which will be a test of whether the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade will have an impact on congressional races and if Republicans can reclaim some suburban territory.

A Few Thoughts for the End of the Week

July 15, 2022 at 9:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I’m not getting into that car.”

That’s what Vice President reportedly told Secret Service agents after being whisked away to an undisclosed part of the Capitol as rioters flooded the halls on January 6.

Can ‘Voter Decoupling’ Save Democrats This Year?

July 14, 2022 at 3:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new AARP poll in Georgia finds Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) leading challenger Herschel Walker (R) in the U.S. Senate race, 50% to 47%.

The same poll shows President Biden’s approval rate at just 34% so that means Warnock is running a remarkable 16 points ahead of Biden.

Trolling Trump

July 13, 2022 at 10:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The January 6 Committee has made some interesting editorial choices in the video testimony they feature.

One video segment at yesterday’s hearing featured Ivanka Trump denying that she said she wanted to attend the Ellipse rally speech with her father to try to “calm him down” which was juxtaposed with her former chief-of-staff affirming exactly that.

Who Was Trump Trying to Influence?

July 12, 2022 at 5:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) dropped a pretty big bombshell at the end of today’s January 6 Committee hearing:

After our last hearing, President Trump tried to call a witness in our investigation, a witness you have not seen in these hearings. That person declined to answer or respond to President Trump’s call and instead alerted their lawyer to the call. Their lawyer alerted us, and this committee has supplied that information to the Department of Justice.

Reaction to Today’s January 6 Committee Hearing – Part II

July 12, 2022 at 3:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

As bad as we thought the January 6 insurrection was, we learned today that it was much, much worse.

Trump not only summoned the mob, as we learned in the first half of today’s hearing, but he planned ahead of time to unleash them on the Capitol to disrupt the counting of electoral votes.

Reaction to Today’s January 6 Committee Hearing – Part I

July 12, 2022 at 2:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The January 6 Committee turned its focus to the violent domestic extremist groups that stormed the Capitol and the role former President Donald Trump has in assembling the mob that disrupted the electoral count.

The committee once again employed the incredibly effective strategy of using the words of Trump’s inner circle — and even his family — to undermine Trump’s false claims that the election was somehow stolen.

Two Very Weak Candidates Could Face Off In 2024

July 11, 2022 at 10:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The new New York Times/Siena poll is a massive wake up call for Democrats.

With an approval rate of just 33%, Joe Biden looks like the weakest incumbent president in decades. Even more alarming is that 61% of Democrats — and 94% of those ages 18 to 29 — don’t want Biden to run again.

A Few Thoughts for the End of the Week

July 9, 2022 at 11:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Republicans have nominated some really weak candidates in key Senate races.

  • In Georgia, Herschel Walker (R) is a nightmare candidate regularly caught lying to his own staff about his past.
  • In Pennsylvania, Mehmet Oz (R) is a carpetbagger unable to fend off attacks from a rival who’s been too sick to campaign for the last two months.
  • In Ohio, J.D. Vance (R) is an untested, first time candidate running against a congressman who’s had his eyes set on higher office for more than a decade.

And on August 2, Republicans could very well nominate Eric Greitens (R), the disgraced former governor, in Missouri and Blake Masters (R), who openly flirts with white supremacism, in Arizona.

No Line Is Apparently Too Far for Republicans

July 8, 2022 at 10:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

There’s been a lot of British political news here lately, but that’s because Boris Johnson’s forced resignation explains what is wrong with the Republican Party.

In the U.K, a dysfunctional and scandal-ridden leader was actually forced from power by his own party.

The Coming Red Wave Might Be a Red Mirage

July 6, 2022 at 2:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

There have now been 9 generic congressional ballot polls since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and their average shows Democrats leading by 45.4% to 43.7% lead or 1.7 percentage points.  If you take out the Rasmussen polls, Democrats hold a 2.5 percentage point lead.

Looking at this data, Simon Rosenberg concludes the race has shifted 4 to 5 percentage points towards the Democrats in just a couple of weeks.
