June 12, 2022 at 11:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) would not commit to backing President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election, saying instead that “we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it,” CNN reports.

Said Ocasio-Cortez: “We should endorse when we get to it, but I believe that the President’s been doing a very good job so far, and, you know, should he run again, I think that I, you know, I think… we’ll take a look at it. But right now, we need to focus on winning a majority instead of a presidential election.”

The Stories Missing From Your Feed

You already know the problem: the same story can look completely different depending on where you read it — and some barely show up at all because algorithms decide what you see.

My goal for Political Wire is to help you get outside those filters — to understand not just what happened, but how it’s being covered and who might be missing it. That’s why I use and recommend Ground News.

It’s an app and website that brings together global news from across the political spectrum, showing each source’s bias, factuality, and ownership.

What I find especially useful is the Blindspot Feed. It highlights stories getting heavy coverage on one side but little on the other — a quick way to see what your usual news diet may be missing.

— Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), at a congressional hearing.

Senators Close to Agreement on Gun Legislation

June 12, 2022 at 10:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate negotiators in both parties are pushing to announce as soon as Sunday the outlines of an agreement on new measures to address gun violence,“ CNN reports.

Politico: “The emerging package is anchored around extra scrutiny for gun buyers under the age of 21, grants to states to enact so-called red flag laws and new spending on mental health treatment and school security. While translating the agreement into legislation will take time, the group of senators is expected to announce that a significant number of lawmakers in both parties are behind their proposal responding to rising gun violence.”

Axios: “The deal, which will be announced imminently, falls short of what many Democrats want, but if passed, it would be the most significant gun safety measure in decades.”

Raskin Says Merrick Garland Knows ‘What’s at Stake’

June 12, 2022 at 10:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) said he believes Attorney General Merrick Garland knows “what’s at stake here” when it comes to a possible indictment of former President Donald Trump from the Department of Justice, CNN reports.

Said Raskin: “One of the conventions that was crushed during the Trump administration was respect by politicians for the independence of the law enforcement function.”

He added: “Attorney General Garland is my constituent, and I don’t browbeat my constituents. I think that he knows, his staff knows, US attorneys know, what’s at stake here. They know the importance of it, but I think they are rightfully paying close attention to precedent in history as well as the facts of this case.”

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) told ABC News that the Department of Justice should investigate Trump for possible crimes in election plot.

Trump Sounds Like He’s Running Again

June 12, 2022 at 8:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Goodwin contacted Donald Trump “by phone after I learned Trump told an associate he was definitely running in 2024. Similar reports have surfaced in the past, and this one met the same fate: He wouldn’t confirm or deny he made the comment.”

Said Trump: “Well, something has to be done but I haven’t announced anything. But in my mind, I’ve made a decision.”

“It’s a near-lock he is running but he sees no advantage in saying so now. It would mean complying with federal rules on reporting fund-raising and expenditures and would stretch the campaign to an unbearable length.”

June 12, 2022 at 8:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe on Sunday accused the United States of being a “bully” and “hijacking” countries around the region, during a combative speech in which he said his country would “fight to the very end” to stop Taiwanese independence, CNN reports.

White House to Announce Biden Trip to Saudi Arabia

June 12, 2022 at 8:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Palin, Begich Are Early Frontunners in Alaska Primary

June 12, 2022 at 7:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Early results in Alaska’s 48-candidate special primary election for U.S. House Saturday showed Republicans Sarah Palin and Nick Begich III taking the lead, followed by independent Al Gross. Democratic former state Rep. Mary Peltola, in her first statewide campaign, was in fourth,” the Anchorage Daily News reports.

“Palin, in her first campaign since resigning as Alaska governor in 2009, was the clear leader with 30%. Begich, a businessman and investor who launched his campaign before the March death of longtime Alaska U.S. Rep. Don Young — which prompted Saturday’s special election — was in second with 19%.”

“Gross, an orthopedic surgeon who ran unsuccessfully as an independent for U.S. Senate in 2020, with the Democratic Party’s nomination, was in third with 12%.”

Tom Emmer Tries to Temper GOP Expectations

June 11, 2022 at 1:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “As chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, Emmer needed to set expectations right… He was also trying to explain a bit of modern political science, tamping down a building sense of irrational exuberance among some Republicans and utter despair among some Democrats. There are many more less-competitive seats now than there were in the 1990s, before redistricting turned into a science.”

“Plus, voters have grown so polarized that straight-party voting has become the norm, leading to fewer seats that swing back and forth, according to Charlie Cook, an independent election analyst. Republicans gained more than 10 House seats in the 2020 elections even as Joe Biden won the presidential popular vote by more than 7 million. That historic anomaly left Emmer on the precipice of the majority, needing a net gain of five seats, but it also means there are few seats for Republicans to win.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

June 11, 2022 at 1:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The presidency is a monstrously taxing job and the stark reality is the president would be closer to 90 than 80 at the end of a second term, and that would be a major issue.”

— David Axelrod, quoted by the New York Times.

Trump Using January 6 Hearings to Fundraise

June 11, 2022 at 1:06 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Politicians and special interests are using the Jan. 6 hearings in appeals for donations, with even former President Donald Trump trying to cash in on the congressional probe of his role in the deadly US Capitol assault,” Bloomberg reports.

“Like a two-way toll booth just around the corner from this fall’s mid-term elections, donor appeals playing off the investigation run a gamut. They go from committees for Democrats enthusiastically praising the House panel and Republican organizations denouncing it to groups focused on specific policy changes.”

June 11, 2022 at 12:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment
