Romney Seeks to Rejoin National Dialogue

May 30, 2013 at 7:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More than half a year after his election loss, Mitt Romney is putting a tentative foot back onto the public stage,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Romney said that he plans to re-emerge in ways that will “help shape national priorities.”

“As a first step, the former Republican presidential nominee plans to welcome 200 friends and supporters to a three-day summit next week that he will host at a Utah mountain resort. He is considering writing a book and a series of opinion pieces, and has plans to campaign for 2014 candidates. But he is wary of overdoing it.”

Said Romney: “I’m not going to be bothering the airwaves with a constant series of speeches.”

“Rubio’s articulate. I met him once, maybe twice. My brother likes him, so I like him.”

— Former President George W. Bush, quoted by the Huffington Post, on his impressions of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL).

Billy Long, Now and Then

May 30, 2013 at 4:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sequestration was the president’s idea. Hopefully we can budget and do away with the sequester before her husband is laid off.”

— Rep. Billy Long (R-MO), in an interview on KOLR-TV.

“The people that I’ve talked to seem to be doing well. In fact, when I got out in restaurants here in town, people come up to me. They want to see more sequestration, not less.”

— Long, in an interview on the same station earlier this month.

Your Personal Data Is Already for Sale

A recent report says a member of Elon Musk's DOGE task force may have taken sensitive Social Security data to his private-sector job. Troubling — but data brokers already collect and sell your social security number, birth date, home address and more to anyone willing to pay.

You can’t stop data brokers — but you can make them delete your information.

Incogni does the work for you — contacting brokers and demanding removal of your personal data, including from hard-to-clean People Search sites.

It’s a simple way to reduce identity-theft risk, cut spam calls and keep sensitive financial and health data private.

Quinn Focuses on Personal Over Political

May 30, 2013 at 4:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The New York Times gets an early peek at New York City mayoral candidate Christine Quinn’s new memoir, With Patience and Fortitude: A Memoir.

“Ms. Quinn’s candor about her personal life is as notable as her vagueness about politics. There is not a single reference to the slush-fund scandal that has been her lowest point as speaker. She says little about her relationship with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, whom she calls ‘my colleague.’ The battle over term limits is disposed of in two pages, while thousands of words are devoted to her wedding last year.”

McCollum Suggests Scott Could Face Primary

May 30, 2013 at 3:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum (R), who lost the gubernatorial primary to Rick Scott (R) in 2010, thinks the governor could face a primary himself, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Said McCollum: “I wouldn’t be surprised if somebody looks at it. I’m not planning to do it.”

More Staffers Quit on Toronto Mayor

May 30, 2013 at 2:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The exodus of staff members from the office of scandal-embroiled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford continues, the Toronto Star reports.

With two staffers escorted out by security today, it brings to five the number of staff who have walked out or been fired from Ford’s office in the last week.

Fox Contributor Says Men Should Dominate Women

May 30, 2013 at 1:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

After a Pew Research report found that mothers were the sole breadwinners in 40% of American households with children, Erick Erickson said on Fox Business that it is “anti-science” to suggest that’s acceptable.

Said Erickson: “I’m so used to liberals telling conservatives that they’re anti-science. But liberals who defend this and say it is not a bad thing are very anti-science. When you look at biology — when you look at the natural world — the roles of a male and a female in society and in other animals, the male typically is the dominant role. The female, it’s not antithesis, or it’s not competing, it’s a complementary role.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

May 30, 2013 at 1:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Congress has a job to do with oversight. But if your oversight becomes overly political, the public gets turned off. Not that this White House needs saving, but that’s where the Republicans are saving the White House.”

— Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, quoted by Time magazine.

Toronto Mayor Claimed to Know Whereabouts of Video

May 30, 2013 at 12:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford “told senior aides not to worry about a video appearing to show him smoking crack cocaine because he knew where it was,” the Toronto Star reports.

“Ford then blurted out the address of two 17th-floor units — 1701 and 1703 — at a Dixon Rd. apartment complex, to the shock of staffers at a city hall meeting almost two weeks ago.”

Meanwhile, the Toronto Globe and Mail reports one of the men seen in the video was killed and an arrest made.

May 30, 2013 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

With James Comey likely to be tapped to be the next FBI Director, The Fix rightly calls his May 2007 testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee perhaps the most riveting ever.

It’s definitely worth watching.

Chafee Switch is a New England Trend

May 30, 2013 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Boston Globe notes Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee’s (R-RI) party switch is part of a regional trend.

“The frequency of incumbents leaving their longtime parties – often accompanied by the pat explanation that their parties have, in fact, left them – reflects the region’s decades-long leftward trend and the collapse of the Republican Party as an electoral force in what was once fertile territory.”

The Week: Why Chafee is becoming a Democrat.

Margolies Will Run for Congress Again

May 30, 2013 at 11:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After 20 years, the congresswoman whose name became shorthand for losing your seat over a single vote is looking to return to Capitol Hill,” the Washington Post reports.

“Marjorie Margolies is planning to run for Pennsylvania’s 13th House District seat… As a freshman in 1993, Margolies (then Margolies-Mezvinsky) was convinced by Democrats to switch her vote and save President Bill Clinton’s budget. On the night of the vote, Republicans taunted her from the aisles, predicting that she would lose her conservative district. They were right.”

Is the New Weiner the Same as the Old Weiner?

May 30, 2013 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The new Anthony Weiner bears an uncanny resemblance to the pugnacious, hard-charging Anthony Weiner of old. The fallen congressman’s comeback attempt prompted a natural question: Was this a bid for personal and professional redemption — or an expression of the narcissism that got him in trouble in the first place? There may never be a clear answer.”

Said Weiner: “I will leave it to you to analyze the old versus the new, but to me my views on these things haven’t changed… I would think a much worse critique would be if somebody appeared, if I appeared, to be a different person than the one I was. This is who I am.”

News Organizations Decline Meeting with Holder

May 30, 2013 at 10:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Attorney General Eric Holder’s “plans to sit down with media representatives to discuss guidelines for handling investigations into leaks to the news media have run into trouble,” CNN reports.

The New York Times, the Associated Press and CNN will all decline the invitation unless its on-the-record.

Andrew Sulivan: “It was no doubt meant as an act of reconciliation and dialogue; but it
backfired, and rightly so. If my emails had been searched by the DOJ,
I’d be eager to talk to the man who authorized, in the case of James
Rosen, a potentially criminal warrant. But I’d want that talk to be
open, clear and accountable. To try to address the question of secret government intrusion into the press in secret is like something out of a John Le Carre novel.”

Romney Favors Ryan in 2016

May 30, 2013 at 10:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ann Romney told CBS News that she and her husband back Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) in the 2016 presidential race.

Said Romney: “Mitt and I are always very, very partial to Paul Ryan,” while adding that “we don’t even know if he’s going to run.”

Jeb Bush Doesn’t Agree with His Mother

May 30, 2013 at 9:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) said “he’s undecided about running for president but didn’t appear to agree with his mother that enough members of their family have occupied the White House,” the AP reports.

Said Bush: “What can I tell you? All I can say is we all have mothers, right? She is totally liberated, and God bless her.”

Bush said he needs another year before making his decision.

Thune Warns About GOP Infighting

May 30, 2013 at 9:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. John Thune (R-SD) told the Sioux Falls Argus Leader that GOP infighting “could hurt Republicans at the ballot box, as well as impeding their legislative agendas once elected.”

Said Thune: “When Republicans end up going to war with Republicans, it often leads to Democrats getting elected.”

Nonetheless, Thune said he’s not going to discourage Rep. Kristi Noem (R-SD) from challenging former South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds (R) in the 2014 U.S. Senate race.
