More Americans Find Trump Racist, Corrupt and Cruel
A new Economist/YouGov poll found about 56% of Americans strongly or somewhat disapprove of President Trump’s job performance — and they’re using harsh words to show their discontent.
About 47% of those surveyed said they would use “racist” to describe the president, while 24% would not describe him that way.
Roughly 49% of Americans would use “corrupt” to describe Trump, whose wealth has grown since returning to the White House, but 23% would not describe him that way.
And 46% of adults would describe the president as “cruel,” compared to 22% who don’t consider him to be so.
White House Shrugs Off Lutnick’s Epstein Ties
“Revelations about ties to Jeffrey Epstein have toppled leaders of corporate America, Hollywood and academia as the Justice Department has released millions of documents and images from the disgraced financier’s files in recent months. But the Trump administration has steadfastly repelled such fallout, dismissing any associations that top officials had with the sex offender as trivial,” the New York Times reports.
“The White House’s fortress mentality was mobilized last week after Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, acknowledged that he traveled to Mr. Epstein’s private island and had another encounter with him years after Mr. Lutnick claimed to have cut ties with him.”

Mamdani Warns of Nearly 10% Property-Tax Boost
“Mayor Zohran Mamdani proposed raising New York City property taxes by nearly 10%, having failed so far to persuade New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to increase taxes on corporations and the wealthy,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“Higher taxes for rich corporations and individuals remains his first choice, Mamdani said Tuesday as he shared his proposed budget for fiscal year 2027.”

Trump’s Cabinet Huddles on Midterms Messaging
Politico: “Most of President Trump’s Cabinet is currently meeting at the Capitol Hill Club with chief of staff Susie Wiles, deputy chief of staff James Blair and other top Trump political advisers for a closed-door strategy session focused on how to sell Trump’s agenda and sharpen the GOP’s midterm message.”
The gathering — expected to draw Cabinet officials, chiefs of staff and other senior agency officials — is designed to get Trump’s Cabinet on the same page as Republicans begin to take their case on the road.”
“The meeting will center on messaging, polling and the electoral map, with White House and political aides walking through data on key battlegrounds and outlining the need for Cabinet officials to serve as more active surrogates.”
Exchange of the Day
Vice President JD Vance was interviewed on Fox News by Martha MacCallum:
MacCALLUM: Democrats are winning congressional vote preference by 6 points. We’ve got a long way to go, but obviously that number would not be good.
VANCE: That would not be good. I will say, as much as we love Fox News, we always think Fox News has the worst polling.
MacCALLUM: I could show you other ones that are very similar.
Wall Street Wants to Turn Election Bets Into Investments
“Roundhill Investments has asked the Securities and Exchange Commission for permission to launch six ETFs that would let investors wager on U.S. election outcomes through standard brokerage accounts — the most ambitious attempt yet to bring prediction markets into mainstream finance,” Bloomberg reports.
“The proposed exchange-traded funds, disclosed in a filing on Feb. 13, cover presidential, Senate and House races across both parties.”
GOP Lawmaker Faces Backlash to Islamophobic Post
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said that Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL) — who said he prefers dogs to Muslims — “is a disgrace to the United States Congress. He is an Islamophobic, disgusting and unrepentant bigot,” the New York Times reports.
He added that it was “unacceptable that Mike Johnson and House Republicans continue to remain silent.”
Republicans Push More Voting Restrictions in Congress
“The strict voter identification measure that Republicans pushed through the House last week was just their opening salvo in a monthslong effort to establish new voting restrictions they regard as crucial to keeping control of Congress ahead of midterm elections the GOP is in danger of losing,” the New York Times reports.
“The relentless focus on the bills, which face an uphill path to becoming law, serves two purposes that Republicans view as existential. It is aimed at intensifying the pressure within their own ranks to do whatever necessary to muscle the legislation through Congress and to President Trump’s desk, allowing them to make changes they believe could reshape the electorate in their favor.”
“Barring that, it allows Republicans to amplify the president’s false claims of mass voter fraud, sowing distrust ahead of the November elections that helps build a case, however groundless, that any Democratic victories will be a result of cheating.”
Peru Ousts Another Embattled President
“Peru’s congress on Tuesday voted to oust the nation’s president, José Jerí, extending years of political upheaval in one of the world’s most important exporters of essential minerals,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
Flashback Quote of the Day

— JD Vance, on September 4, 2021.

Be Careful for What You Wish For
Cook Political Report: “Minnesota Republicans entered 2026 giddy at the possibility of ousting Gov. Tim Walz, hoping a wave of discontent over a sprawling fraud scandal would help them deny the Democrat a third term. But Walz’s January decision to end his reelection bid under intense pressure from the GOP appears to have come back to bite his critics. U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a popular four-term incumbent who can’t be easily tied to waste in state government, quickly unified her party behind a gubernatorial campaign that leaves Republicans without a viable path to victory.”
“Given Klobuchar’s long track record of electoral success, the overall national climate and the prospect of an ugly GOP primary fight that probably won’t be settled until Aug. 11, this race shifts from Likely Democrat to Solid Democrat.”
