Advice to Alabama In Choosing a New Senator

March 31, 2021 at 2:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Steve Flowers, writing for the Alabama Political Reporter:

“It will be impossible to replace Senator Shelby. The amount of federal dollars he has secured for the Heart of Dixie is incomprehensible and irreplaceable. He will be remembered as the greatest senator in Alabama history.”

“Seniority is paramount in Washington.  It is everything. It took Senator Shelby waiting 20 years before he became one of the major players in Washington. Therefore, Senator Shelby would be the first to tell you that it is imperative for Alabama’s future that we elect someone young to be his successor. If you send someone over 60 to the U.S. Senate, they will never have any real power.”

Wisconsin High Court Strikes Down Mask Mandate

March 31, 2021 at 1:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Wisconsin’s Supreme Court struck down Gov. Tony Evers’ (D) statewide mask mandate on Wednesday by ruling against multiple emergency declarations made during the pandemic,” Axios reports.

“The court ruled that the governor overstepped his powers by issuing multiple emergency declarations for the pandemic, lasting longer than 60 days, without approval from the state legislature. The ruling invalidates the current mask mandate in the state, which was set to expire next Monday.”

Georgia Republicans Accused of Taking Illegal Donations

March 31, 2021 at 1:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Insider: “Two government watchdog groups have filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission accusing the Georgia Republican Party of illegally accepting in-kind contributions from True the Vote, a nonprofit that engaged in election-related activities around the Georgia Senate runoffs.”

Did Matt Gaetz Float Resignation Rumors?

March 31, 2021 at 12:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Philip Bump looks at rumors that Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) was considering resigning from Congress to take a job in conservative media.

“Outside of the context that emerged with the reported investigation, the story made some sense. Gaetz has been on Fox News an average of 87 minutes a month over the past 12 months; for a low-ranking member of the minority party with an affection for the spotlight to make such a transition wouldn’t be a shock.”

“With the new revelation, though, that story takes on a different color: Was that rumor floated simply as cover for Gaetz to resign for other reasons? (It’s worth noting that resignations from positions of power can be part of plea agreements.) Once we’re reconsidering Gaetz’s willingness to walk away from Congress, we might reconsider his offer in early February to resign from Congress to aid Trump’s impeachment defense. Was the impetus for that attention or, even then, some form of self-preservation?”

Schumer Wants Senate to Act on Marijuana

March 31, 2021 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is pushing the Senate toward lifting the federal prohibition on marijuana with legislation that would represent the biggest overhaul of federal drug policy in decades.”

“The bill that Schumer is drafting with Senate Finance Chair Ron Wyden of Oregon and New Jersey Senator Cory Booker is still being written. Though they avoided the term legalization when announcing their plan, it is expected to remove marijuana from the list of controlled substances and tax and regulate it on the federal level while leaving states able to enforce their own laws regarding the drug.”

Christy Smith Will Run Again for California House Seat

March 31, 2021 at 11:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Christy Smith (D) launched her campaign for the California’s 25th congressional district, setting up a rematch for one of the state’s most competitive House seats with Rep. Mike Garcia (R), The Hill reports.

Smith lost twice to Garcia in 2020 in the Los Angeles-area district – once in May to finish the term of former Rep. Katie Hill (D) and once in November for a full term.

Marine Le Pen Touts Unity Government for France

March 31, 2021 at 11:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“French far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who is almost level with incumbent Emmanuel Macron in the opinion polls ahead of next year’s presidential election, has said she would form a government of national unity if elected and would draw support from voters of left and right, just as the UK’s Boris Johnson has done,” the Financial Times reports.

Delta CEO Condemns Georgia Voting Law

March 31, 2021 at 11:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian, who is one of the largest employers in Georgia, condemned the state’s new election law as “unacceptable” in a memo circulated to staff, claiming that the “entire rationale for this bill was based on a lie” about widespread voter fraud in 2020, Axios reports.

Biden Faces Few Constraints on Spending

March 31, 2021 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Los Angeles Times: “Biden’s shift, from backing a key part of Reagan’s agenda to embracing an expansion of government more in tune with President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, parallels a change in the electorate. Voters’ concerns about the scope of government and the size of the national debt haven’t disappeared. But for now, that’s not driving how people vote.”

“As a result, though President Trump handed Biden a federal debt that had reached the largest level since the end of World War II, the new president is operating with fewer political constraints related to the federal deficit than any of his three Democratic predecessors.”

Republicans Not Unhappy to See Matt Gaetz in Trouble

March 31, 2021 at 10:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Trump aides aren’t necessarily happy to see Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) in trouble, but they “feel a little vindicated,” Insider reports.

Said one: “He’s the meanest person in politics.”

Said another: “Republican leadership will likely watch him completely implode in a matter of days without having to do a thing.”

QAnon Scrambles to Cover for Matt Gaetz

March 31, 2021 at 10:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vice News: “On Tuesday, it sure seemed like the Storm had arrived, when the New York Times broke a bombshell story that Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz was being investigated by the Department of Justice for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and paid for her to travel with him.”

“But in the hours after the news broke, QAnon followers didn’t celebrate. Instead, they frantically scrambled to explain why he couldn’t possibly have done what he’s accused of doing.”

A Tax Cut for the Wealthy That Democrats Like

March 31, 2021 at 10:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Week: “The SALT deduction is a good window into the politics of Democratic moderates in blue states. The SALT cap stipulates that tax filers can now only deduct $10,000 in state and local tax payments from their income for the purposes of federal tax liability.”

“The deduction is effectively a roundabout subsidy of high-tax blue states (because it lessens the burden of paying their often higher taxes), and capping it was a gleeful Republican finger into the eye of places like Maryland, New York, and California. But the benefits of removing the cap would be extraordinarily regressive.”

Biden Will Let Trump’s B-1 Visa Ban Expire

March 31, 2021 at 9:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The moratorium, which affected H-1B visas used by technology companies to hire foreign coders and engineers, was imposed last June.”

Trump Ignored Adviser on Virus Supply Shortage

March 31, 2021 at 8:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Peter Navarro privately urged former President Donald Trump “to acquire critical medical supplies in the early days of the coronavirus outbreak — and after the warning was ignored, pursued his own ad hoc strategy that committed more than $1 billion in federal funds and has since prompted multiple probes,” the Washington Post reports.
