Laura Loomer Warns Epstein Could ‘Consume’ Trump

July 17, 2025 at 5:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Right-wing activist Laura Loomer warned that President Donald Trump’s handling of the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein threatens to ‘consume his presidency’ in an interview on Wednesday, a dramatic rebuke from a presidential confidante that illustrates the growing rupture in the MAGA coalition,” Politico reports.

NPR: Is President Trump’s MAGA coalition splintering over handling of the Epstein case?

CNN: QAnon shows the staying power of Epstein theories. Trump should know they won’t go away.

Semafor: Epstein story continues to haunt Trump.

House Democrats Ready to Redistrict California

July 17, 2025 at 5:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“California Democrats are charging ahead with an ambitious and potentially expensive plan to squeeze between five and seven more Democratic seats out of their congressional map,” Punchbowl News reports.

“The goal: To offset the Republican redistricting in Texas — and potentially elsewhere — and win the House majority next year.”

“California Democrats were overwhelmingly on board with drawing a new map, but members want input in how the lines are drawn.”

Said Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-CA): “We’re ready. If Texas goes, we are going.”

Trump Says Coca-Cola to Switch to Cane Sugar in U.S.

July 17, 2025 at 5:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Mexican Coca-Cola, which is made with cane sugar, unlike the U.S. version sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, has many fans — and American soda drinkers might soon have more options for getting their sweet cola fix,” the Washington Post reports.

“President Donald Trump on Wednesday wrote on Truth Social that he had been in touch with Coca-Cola executives, who he wrote had agreed to produce the nation’s top-selling soft drink domestically using cane sugar, as it is done south of the border.”

Senate Passes Bill to Cut Spending by $9 Billion

July 17, 2025 at 5:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Senate narrowly approved President Donald Trump’s request to claw back $9 billion in foreign aid and federal funding for public broadcasting early Thursday morning, handing the administration a victory in its ongoing power struggle with Congress over federal spending,” the Washington Post reports.

New York Times: “The bulk of the funds targeted — about $8 billion — was for foreign assistance programs. The remaining $1.1 billion was for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds NPR and PBS. The House is expected to give final approval to the package later this week, sending it to Mr. Trump for his signature.”

Trump’s Soft Power Retreat Scrambles U.S.-China Race

July 17, 2025 at 5:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump has set a radical new course in the U.S.-China rivalry, ceding ground to Beijing in pursuit of a far narrower vision of America’s role in the world,” Axios reports.

“Six months into office, the Trump administration has hollowed out the machinery of American soft power and retreated from key arenas where the U.S. has sought to blunt China’s rise.”

“Some of it is strategic: an ‘America First’ rejection of the institutions and norms Trump officials view as bloated, failed or captured by a liberal foreign policy establishment.”

“But some of it, critics warn, is shortsighted: focused more on scoring domestic political points than sustaining the long-term foundations of American exceptionalism.”

July 17, 2025 at 5:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Nearly 70 Trump administration officials and nominees held cryptocurrency or investments in blockchain or digital-asset companies at the time of their selection, with stakes ranging from small to more than $120 million,” a Washington Post examination found.

Crypto Week Is an Unmitigated Disaster

July 16, 2025 at 6:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The House is at war with itself, and the crypto agenda is on the line,” Punchbowl News reports.

“For the second day in a row, conservatives have ground House business to a halt. After passing a motion to reconsider on the rule – effectively to allow debate on the GOP’s crypto agenda – Republicans are now completely stalled out in trying to pass the rule for a second time.”

Republican Senators Don’t Like Bill They’ll Still Vote For

July 16, 2025 at 5:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Some key Senate Republicans are expressing serious reservations with a package of spending cuts requested by President Donald Trump as they barrel toward a final vote as soon as Wednesday evening,” NBC News reports.

“But several of those senators say they’ll still vote for the bill, which slashes $9 billion in previously approved funding for foreign aid and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds NPR and PBS.”

Trump’s Epstein Answers Are Getting Worse

July 16, 2025 at 4:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Chait: “Donald Trump had two opportunities yesterday, and another this morning, to dispel any nagging sense that he is hiding incriminating information about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. He did not make the most of them. Instead, he delivered an impersonation of a cornered man coated in flop sweat desperately trying to talk his way out…”

“Sometimes people sound guilty even if they aren’t, especially if they’re government officials. Still, whatever probability you had in your mind that the Epstein files contain damaging material, you should probably raise it after listening to Trump’s remarks on the subject yesterday.”

The Global Economy Powers On

July 16, 2025 at 4:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Economist: “In the face of chaos, the global economy powers on. Since 2011 growth has continued at around 3% a year. During the worst of the euro crisis in 2012? Around 3%. What about 2016, the year Britain voted for Brexit and America for Donald Trump, or 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine? Also 3%.”

“The exception was in 2020-21, during the pandemic. When governments introduced lockdowns, many feared a slump to rival the Depression. In fact, over the following two years the world economy ground out annual GDP growth of 2%; one year of contraction, followed by a storming recovery.”

Trump Forgot That He Appointed the Current Fed Chair

July 16, 2025 at 3:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump was raging against Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell in the Oval Office when he appeared to forget he was the one who put him in charge, the Daily Beast reports.

Said Trump: “He’s a terrible Fed chair. I was surprised he was appointed. I was surprised, frankly, that Biden put him in and extended him.”

Trump Makes It Personal with MAGA

July 16, 2025 at 3:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“MAGA is recoiling at President Trump’s increasingly personal attacks on his own followers over Jeffrey Epstein, opening the most bitter divisions yet between the president and the GOP base,” Axios reports.

“MAGA has at times grumbled over Trump’s handling of foreign affairs, immigration and other sporadic issues. But the president’s growing irritation with his supporters’ Epstein theories and adamance that they’re illegitimate is widening the most significant rift yet.”

Crypto Bills Stall Again on the House Floor

July 16, 2025 at 2:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More cryptocurrency drama is unfolding on the House floor Wednesday, a day after conservative hard-liners foiled GOP leaders’ plans to advance a trio of regulatory bills,” Politico reports.

“The hard-liners climbed back aboard following a Tuesday night meeting with President Donald Trump and a last-minute negotiation Wednesday with House leaders that allowed the chamber to take an initial procedural step on the legislation. But the deal they cut — to merge the market-structure-focused CLARITY Act with a separate bill banning a central bank digital currency — has sparked backlash from members of the committees that crafted the legislation.”

No New Wars?

July 16, 2025 at 2:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Telegraph: “Trump has overseen nearly as many air strikes in the first five months of his second term as Joe Biden launched in his entire presidency.”
