Trump Says He Purposely Conflated Pelosi with Haley

February 15, 2024 at 7:21 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump claimed he purposely conflated Nancy Pelosi with Nikki Haley last month, The Hill reports.

Said Trump:  “So it’s very hard to be sarcastic when I interpose. I’m not a Nicki fan, and I’m not a Pelosi fan. And when I purposely interpose names they said, ‘He didn’t know Pelosi from Nikki, from tricky Nikki.”

He added: “I interpose and they make a big deal out of it. I said, ‘No, no, I think they both stink, they have something in common they both stink.’ Remember this. When I make a statement like that about Nikki that means she will never be running for vice president.”

A new Winthrop poll shows Donald Trump crushing Nikki Haley by 36 points in her home state of South Carolina, 65% to 29%.

New York Republicans Suffer Another Defeat

February 15, 2024 at 6:56 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Fresh off a bruising special election loss, House Republicans from New York suffered yet another setback on Wednesday with the defeat of their long sought-after tax bill,” Axios reports.

“Those lawmakers are trying to notch a win before facing an uphill battle to defend their party’s narrow majority in November.”

“A procedural vote to advance the bill failed after 18 conservative Republicans joined with Democrats in voting against it.”

Trump Doubles Down on NATO Demand

February 15, 2024 at 6:52 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump on Wednesday night underscored his controversial position that the U.S. would not defend any NATO ally country that does not spend at least 2 percent of its gross domestic product on defense,” Politico reports.

Government Funding Fight About to Flare Again

February 15, 2024 at 6:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “House Republicans are bracing for a large group of their own members to oppose a final federal spending deal next month — requiring Speaker Mike Johnson to rely on Democrats during multiple high-stakes votes.”

RNC Recognizes Hoekstra as Michigan GOP Chair

February 15, 2024 at 5:56 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Republican National Committee has decided to recognize former U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra as the chairman of the Michigan Republican Party amid an ongoing battle for control of the state GOP,” the Detroit News reports.

“Hoekstra, whom former President Donald Trump had endorsed as the party’s chairman, and Kristina Karamo, whom GOP delegates elected to the position a year ago, have been locked in a fight for power for weeks.”

Quote of the Day

February 15, 2024 at 5:48 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans who are asking why they keep losing elections are like the guy who walks into the ER with a nail in his head, asking why he has a headache.”

Trump’s Trial Schedule Comes Into Focus

February 15, 2024 at 5:39 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump is expected at the defendant’s table in a Manhattan courtroom on Thursday for a conference that could confirm he’ll be tried next month for allegedly falsifying hush money repayment records — the first criminal trial of a former U.S. president,” the Washington Post reports.

“At the same hour in Atlanta, a team of Trump’s lawyers will appear with some of his co-defendants for a hearing in a separate indictment, in which Trump and others are accused of a vast scheme to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results. That hearing will focus on alleged misconduct by the prosecutor.”

“The dual court sessions could help crystallize the timing and viability of two of Trump’s four criminal cases, with additional clarity coming after a hearing in Florida on March 1.”

Democrats Sense Pivot on Immigration Politics

February 15, 2024 at 5:37 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A victory in a New York special election on Tuesday injected Democrats with fresh optimism that the party might have found some of the basic ingredients to neutralize immigration and the border as political issues, which party officials have privately seen as among their deepest areas of vulnerability in 2024,” the New York Times reports.

How Democrats Flipped the Border Issue on Republicans

February 15, 2024 at 5:34 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The possibility that Republicans would bolt from their own deal had occurred to Mr. Schumer from the start, given his previous experience.”

Said Schumer: “We knew it way back then.”

“But Mr. Schumer saw a political upside should that occur: Democrats would be able to say they tried and point to the Republican opposition for failing to halt a surge of migrants illegally crossing the U.S. border with Mexico.”

He added: “It’s a win if Republicans abandon us at the last minute, because if Democrats could put together a tough, bipartisan bill on border, it would not take border away as an issue for the Republicans, but it would give us a 50-50 chance to combat it.”

Senate Looks to Quickly Reject Mayorkas Impeachment

February 15, 2024 at 5:30 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate leaders plan to move quickly this month to reject the articles of impeachment against Alejandro Mayorkas, the homeland security secretary, setting up a speedy trial in hopes of preventing House Republicans from turning the chamber into a political spectacle,” the New York Times reports.

“Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the majority leader, has not yet determined exactly how to go about truncating the proceedings… But he is aiming for quick action, beginning on Feb. 28, the day the House is expected to deliver the charges, that could be over in just a couple of days.”

Putin Claims He Prefers Biden Over Trump

February 15, 2024 at 5:26 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Russian leader Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that he prefers President Biden win the 2024 election over former President Trump,” Axios reports.

Said Putin: “Biden is a more experienced, predictable person. He is a politician of the old school… But we will work with any leader of the United States, who is trusted by the American people.”

The Disaster That Is the House GOP Leadership

February 15, 2024 at 5:21 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “This is the most chaotic, inefficient and ineffective majority we’ve seen in decades covering Congress. It started this way under former Speaker Kevin McCarthy and has gotten worse under Johnson.”

“And things aren’t going to get easier. The House is leaving town today by 2:30 p.m. for the 13-day Presidents Day recess. When members return on Feb. 28, there will be only three days to fund a huge swath of the federal government or face a partial shutdown. There’s another full shutdown deadline a week later.”

“Fair or not, there’s a tremendous amount of criticism focused on Johnson right now… And hanging over this is the possibility of another motion to vacate if Johnson alienates hardline conservatives.”

An incredible fact: “This Republican majority has lost more rule votes than any other majority in five decades, a stunning sign of weakness.”

Special Counsel Making Plans to Testify to GOP Panel

February 15, 2024 at 5:18 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Special counsel Robert Hur is in final talks to publicly testify before Congress in early March about his report on President Biden’s handling of classified documents,” Axios reports.

“House Republicans are salivating about the chance to ask Hur about Biden’s fitness for office.”

Trump Ramps Up Calls to Impeach Biden

February 15, 2024 at 5:10 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump escalated his calls for Congress to impeach President Biden,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Trump: “Congress ought to impeach crooked Joe Biden for attacking his political opponent by weaponizing the DOJ, the FBI, and even the local DAs and attorney generals against his political opponent.”

“Trump faces a total of 91 charges across four criminal cases and has repeatedly sought to portray himself, without evidence, as a victim of a weaponized legal system. While House Republicans launched an impeachment inquiry into Biden last year, it is not related to Trump’s court cases.”

“The Trump campaign is pursuing a strategy of trying to blunt the charges against the former president by leveling similar accusations against Biden. Trump has also described Biden’s impeachment as a way to get even for his two impeachments.”

Mike Johnson Is Close to Losing Control of the House

February 14, 2024 at 8:03 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NOTUS: “Speakers in recent decades have kept a tight grip on the House schedule, blocking politically perilous votes and bills that might undercut the majority’s negotiating power. But having fumbled the seat previously held by expelled Rep. George Santos to Democratic candidate Tom Suozzi in Tuesday’s special election in New York, Johnson will soon be able to lose only two Republicans on a given bill if all Democrats oppose it.”

“A united Democratic caucus needs to win over only a handful of Republicans to temporarily take control of the chamber. Several Republican legislators who might be inclined to support more aid for Ukraine are retiring and more immune to pressure than their colleagues, so picking off GOP allies could be easier for Democrats than usual.”

Another House Committee Chair Will Not Run Again

February 14, 2024 at 5:21 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Green (R-TN) will not seek re-election, Punchbowl News reports.

Green is the fourth committee chair to announce that they are not running again in 2024.

Intelligence Shows Russia Has New Nuclear Capabilities

February 14, 2024 at 5:03 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The United States has informed Congress and its allies in Europe of new intelligence about Russian nuclear capabilities that could pose an international threat,” the New York Times reports.

“Officials said that the new intelligence was serious — but that the capability was still under development, and Russia had not deployed it. Consequently, it did not pose an urgent threat to the United States, Ukraine or America’s European allies, they said. The information is highly classified, and officials said it could not be declassified without cutting off its source.”

Politico: Warning from House Intel is about Russia’s space power.
