Civil War Gaffe Undercuts Nikki Haley’s Pitch

December 29, 2023 at 8:56 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “The test now for Haley is whether she can get her message back on track, with just weeks to go until the first Republican nominating contests.”

“Her initial remarks, which drew wide play on cable news and social media, were potentially damaging because they called into question several elements central to her claim that she is the most capable and electable challenger to former President Donald Trump. It could also make moderate voters question supporting her if she is seen as unprincipled.”

How Russia Silences Wartime Dissent

December 29, 2023 at 8:53 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Just days after invading Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin of Russia signed a censorship law that made it illegal to ‘discredit’ the army. The legislation was so sweeping that even his spokesman acknowledged it was easy to cross the line into prohibited speech.”

“In the first 18 months of the war, the law scooped up a vast array of ordinary Russians — schoolteachers, pensioners, groundskeepers, a carwash owner — for punishment.”

“No gesture, apparently, is too small. Judges have ruled that simply wearing blue and yellow clothing — the colors of the Ukrainian flag — or painting one’s fingernails blue and yellow can be punished. And there are few safe havens as people increasingly inform on their fellow citizens.”

Susan Collins Says Trump Should Be on the Ballot

December 29, 2023 at 8:51 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) came out against the decision to bar Donald Trump from the state’s ballot, The Messenger reports.

Said Collins: “Maine voters should decide who wins the election – not a Secretary of State chosen by the Legislature. The Secretary of State’s decision would deny thousands of Mainers the opportunity to vote for the candidate of their choice, and it should be overturned.”

Ex-GOP Lawmaker Says Trump Reeks

December 29, 2023 at 7:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) has revealed new details about Donald Trump’s alleged bad odor, claiming that he reeks of a combination of several unsavoury scents, The Independent reports.

Said Kinzinger: “It’s not good. The best way to describe it… take armpits, ketchup, a butt and makeup and put that all in a blender and bottle that as a cologne.”

He added: “That’s kind of that. I’ve been amazed that everybody is just kind of learning about this now.”

More States Seek to Remove Trump from Ballot

December 29, 2023 at 7:46 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The campaign to have former President Donald Trump removed from the ballot over his efforts to remain in power after the 2020 election has kicked into high gear, with decisions in two states, Maine and Colorado, barring him from the primary ballots,” the New York Times reports.

“Challenges are still underway in many more states, based on an obscure clause of a constitutional amendment enacted after the Civil War that disqualifies government officials who ‘engaged in insurrection or rebellion’ from holding office.”

“Over the years, the courts and Congress have done little to clarify how that criterion should apply, adding urgency to the calls for the U.S. Supreme Court to weigh in on the politically explosive dispute before the upcoming election.”

Trump Rivals Criticize Maine Decision in His Defense

December 28, 2023 at 11:24 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump’s rivals in the Republican race for president again lined up in his defense on Thursday after Maine barred him from its primary election ballot, the second state to do so,” the New York Times reports.

“When the Colorado Supreme Court barred Mr. Trump from the primary ballot there last week, all of Mr. Trump’s opponents also criticized the decision, rather than using it as an avenue of attack.”

Maine Finds Trump Ineligible for Primary Ballot

December 28, 2023 at 9:27 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Maine’s top election official on Thursday barred Donald Trump from the state’s primary election ballot, the second state to block the former president’s bid for re-election based on claims that his efforts to remain in power after the 2020 election rendered him ineligible,” the New York Times reports.

“In a written decision, the official, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, said that Mr. Trump did not qualify for the ballot because of his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, agreeing with a handful of citizens who claimed that he had incited an insurrection and was thus barred from seeking the presidency again under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.”

Trump Campaign Flew Fake Elector Ballots to D.C.

December 28, 2023 at 5:07 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Two days before the January 6 insurrection, the Trump campaign’s plan to use fake electors to block President-elect Joe Biden from taking office faced a potentially crippling hiccup: The fake elector certificates from two critical battleground states were stuck in the mail,” CNN reports.

“So, Trump campaign operatives scrambled to fly copies of the phony certificates from Michigan and Wisconsin to the nation’s capital, relying on a haphazard chain of couriers, as well as help from two Republicans in Congress, to try to get the documents to then-Vice President Mike Pence while he presided over the Electoral College certification.”

“The operatives even considered chartering a jet to ensure the files reached Washington, DC, in time for the January 6, 2021, proceeding.”

Trump Loses Bid to Delay Defamation Trial

December 28, 2023 at 5:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

E. Jean Carroll’s defamation trial against Donald Trump will go ahead in January after an appeals court rejected the former president’s motion to stay a previous ruling denying his attempt to use presidential immunity as a defense, Rolling Stone reports.

Lauren Boebert’s Carpetbagging Gamble

December 28, 2023 at 4:46 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

It wasn’t coordinated by national Republicans, but Rep. Lauren Boebert’s (R-CO) surprise switch of congressional districts actually increases the odds Republicans will hold both seats.

As for Boebert’s chances at re-election in her new district, I don’t think carpetbagging by itself will sink her.

Independent Lawyers Prosecuting Sex Assault in Military

December 28, 2023 at 2:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The U.S. military on Thursday opened a new chapter in how it investigates and prosecutes cases of sexual assault and other major crimes, putting independent lawyers in charge of those decisions and sidelining commanders after years of pressure from Congress,” the AP reports.

“The change, long resisted by Pentagon leaders, was finally forced by frustrated members of Congress who believed that too often commanders would fail to take victims’ complaints seriously or would try to protect alleged perpetrators in their units.”

Why Nikki Haley Choked on Slavery Question

December 28, 2023 at 2:36 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “The notion that Haley, an Indian-American woman who as governor of South Carolina took down the Confederate flag from the state capital, is some sort of Confederate sympathizer seems absurd. Still, we can only speculate as to why she choked on this particular question.”

“One cynical theory is that Haley thought the obvious answer would not be well received by primary voters in the Party of Lincoln. And rather than challenging her audience to embrace their better angels, she gave a nonsensical answer.”

“If true, it’s illustrative to see how much perceptions have changed regarding the GOP electorate in recent years.”

Rick Scott ‘Swatted’ While at Dinner

December 28, 2023 at 2:16 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) said his house in Naples, Florida, was “swatted’ on Wednesday night while he was at dinner with his wife, the Naples Daily News reports.

Said Scott: “These criminals wasted the time and resources of our law enforcement in a sick attempt to terrorize my family.”

Israeli Airstrike on Hamas Also Killed Scores of Civilians

December 28, 2023 at 2:13 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “The strike killed Ibrahim Biari, Hamas’s battalion commander for Jabalia, who Israeli intelligence believed was directing a nearby battle, and dozens of other militants, according to the Israeli military. But it also left the bodies of at least 126 people in the rubble, one of the deadliest attacks of the Gaza war…”

“The decision to bomb an urban neighborhood packed with people in the middle of the afternoon to kill an enemy commander signaled early in the war that Israel was willing to use overwhelming force against Hamas’s leadership, even if it meant risking large numbers of civilian casualties.”
