Trump Loyalists Resurrect Debunked Election Fraud Claims

December 18, 2023 at 9:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The lie materialized on Friday afternoon and went viral on far-right social media accounts, just as a federal jury ruled that former President Donald Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani must pay $148 million to former Fulton County election staffers he falsely accused of voter fraud,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“The post wrongly claimed that Gov. Brian Kemp’s legal staff notified Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger that more than 17,000 “invalid” votes were tallied in Fulton County in 2020, echoing debunked conspiracy theories that Trump’s allies have pushed for years.”

“The accusation was quickly repudiated by state officials, but that didn’t stop Trump’s loyalists from spreading it.”

House of Lords Member Admits Lying About Links to Firm

December 18, 2023 at 8:30 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A member of Britain’s House of Lords has acknowledged that she repeatedly lied about her links to a company that was awarded lucrative government contracts to supply protective masks and gowns during the coronavirus pandemic,” Bloomberg reports.

“Underwear tycoon Michelle Mone said that she had made an ‘error’ in denying connections to the company PPE Medpro, and regretted threatening to sue journalists who alleged she had ties to the firm. Her husband, Doug Barrowman, has acknowledged he led the consortium that owns the company.”

Chris Christie Must Drop Out

December 18, 2023 at 7:51 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Pfeiffer: “Chris Christie says he entered this race because he believes Donald Trump is unfit for office and that his return to the White House would present an existential danger to the country. If Chris Christie sincerely believes that Trump must be defeated — and I am willing to take him at his word — then he should drop out of the race right now.”

The Hill: Christie doesn’t rule out working with Haley to defeat Trump in GOP primary.

Trump Attacks Big Pharma with Conspiratorial Language

December 18, 2023 at 7:48 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In his first campaign for president, Donald Trump tapped into bipartisan anger over high drug prices to bash pharmaceutical companies. In his latest run, Trump’s echoing the extreme elements of his party to suggest the industry’s products may be hurting Americans, particularly children,” Axios reports.

“The GOP frontrunner’s airing of unfounded, innuendo-filled claims about the pharmaceutical industry could undermine public health. And it reflects how deeply mistrust of health institutions and anti-science rhetoric have become embedded within a sizable faction of the Republican party following the pandemic.”

Trump Would Have a More Compliant Congress If He Wins

December 18, 2023 at 7:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Axios: “Trump, if he wins, will enjoy vigorous backing from the vast majority of GOP leaders and rank-and-file Republicans. His biggest critics will be long gone.”

Ex-Rivals Seek Tim Scott’s Endorsement

December 18, 2023 at 7:43 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Nikki Haley called Sen. Tim Scott on Friday seeking his endorsement, according to a source familiar with the situation — and she’s not the only candidate courting him,” Semafor reports.

“Donald Trump has also privately pushed Scott for his endorsement, the source told Semafor. The two have kept in touch since the senator ended his campaign –– Scott was one of the only opponents who seemed able to remain on Trump’s good side as he ran against him for office.”

“Chris Christie previously reached out about an endorsement, as well. Ron DeSantis, meanwhile, has been in touch with Scott too, though the exact nature of their conversation remains unclear.”

No Border Deal Yet

December 18, 2023 at 7:37 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “A marathon weekend of talks on a border-security plus immigration package that could unlock billions of dollars in Ukraine aid yielded significant progress but no deal, according to senators from both parties. Negotiators on both sides acknowledged Sunday night that there’s not going to be a floor vote on an agreement anytime soon.”

“That means Congress may have a complicated and politically thorny legislative proposal on its plate when lawmakers return to Washington in 2024 – all while they’ll be just days away from a government shutdown.”

Trump Brags He’s Been Indicted More Than Al Capone

December 18, 2023 at 7:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump compared himself to infamous mob boss Al Capone, The Hill reports.

Said Trump: “Did anybody ever hear of the great Alphonse Capone, Al Capone, great, great head of the mafia, right? Mean, Scarface. He had a scar that went from here to here, and he didn’t mind at all. But he was a rough guy.”

He added: “Now, I heard he was indicted once – a couple of people told me a few times more – but I was indicted four times.”

Clarence Thomas Sparked Fears He Would Resign

December 18, 2023 at 6:56 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

ProPublica: “At the resort, Thomas gave a speech at an off-the-record conservative conference. He found himself seated next to a Republican member of Congress on the flight home. The two men talked, and the lawmaker left the conversation worried that Thomas might resign.”

“Congress should give Supreme Court justices a pay raise, Thomas told him. If lawmakers didn’t act, ‘one or more justices will leave soon’ — maybe in the next year.”

“At the time, Thomas’ salary was $173,600, equivalent to over $300,000 today. But he was one of the least wealthy members of the court, and on multiple occasions in that period, he pushed for ways to make more money. In other private conversations, Thomas repeatedly talked about removing a ban on justices giving paid speeches.”

Israel Finds Large Tunnel Adjacent to Gaza Border

December 18, 2023 at 6:50 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Israeli military said Sunday it has discovered a large tunnel shaft in Gaza close to what was once a busy crossing into Israel, raising new questions about how Israeli surveillance missed such conspicuous preparations by Hamas for the militants’ deadly Oct. 7 assault,” the AP reports.

“The entryway to the tunnel is just a few hundred meters from the heavily fortified Erez crossing and a nearby Israeli military base.”

The Alarming Calm of the Biden Campaign

December 18, 2023 at 6:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Magazine: “With less than a year until the 2024 vote, there is a glaring cognitive split at the top of the Democratic Party. While commentators and many strategists are aghast at Biden’s polling slide and desperate to see a course correction, the president’s aides at the White House and at reelection headquarters give every indication that they consider the election very much under control.”

Biden Stands to Lose More to Third-Party Candidates

December 18, 2023 at 6:41 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Third-party candidates are emerging as a potentially crucial obstacle to reassembling Joe Biden’s winning 2020 election coalition, particularly younger voters, in the battleground states likely to decide the US presidency,” Bloomberg reports.

“Interest in independent candidates such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the offspring of a celebrated Democratic political dynasty, and possibly moderate West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, who is considering a run, is the highest in at least 20 years, according to a Gallup Poll.”

“Overall, Biden 2020 voters are more drawn to third-party alternatives while more of Donald Trump’s 2020 supporters stand by their man: 16% say they would vote for Kennedy or another independent candidate compared to 11% of Trump 2020 supporters, according to the swing-state poll.”

Jim Messina: A third-party candidate can’t win in 2024.

Hostage Deaths Fuel Israelis’ Doubts About Netanyahu

December 18, 2023 at 6:40 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Netanyahu is hoping to hold on to power after the war, despite popular fury that Hamas built itself into a military power and invaded Israel on his watch. To do that, he is trying to appeal to Israelis, including his Likud party and its far-right coalition partners, who mistrust the Palestinians now more than ever and argue that a two-state solution is a dangerous fantasy.”

“But as the war continues without resolution, the deaths mount, many of the hostages remain in custody in Gaza and Israel’s main Western allies are sharpening their criticism of him — and even looking beyond him — Mr. Netanyahu’s grip on power seems shakier than ever.”

“Now, the actions of the Israeli soldiers who killed hostages, rather than rescue them, may give even more impetus to those who argue that the intense military campaign, with its bombing and street fighting, is endangering those still held captive, as well as bringing Israel into disrepute.”

Trump Reprises Dehumanizing Language on Immigrants

December 18, 2023 at 6:33 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former president Donald Trump on Sunday accused undocumented immigrants of waging an ‘invasion’ of the United States, in a speech that highlighted his frequent use of dehumanizing language and exaggerated terms to describe many foreigners seeking to enter the country,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Trump: “This is an invasion. This is like a military invasion. Drugs, criminals, gang members and terrorists are pouring into our country at record levels. We’ve never seen anything like it. They’re taking over our cities.”

Feds Hit Southwest Airlines with $140 Million Fine

December 18, 2023 at 6:30 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Transportation Department is slapping Southwest Airlines with the largest consumer protection penalty in the agency’s history, a response for last year’s days-long meltdown that stranded thousands of travelers and aircrew nationwide,” Politico reports.

North Korea Fires Ballistic Missile Into Sea

December 18, 2023 at 6:23 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“North Korea on Sunday fired a short-range ballistic missile into the sea, South Korea said, in a possible display of defiance against the latest steps by Washington and Seoul to tighten their nuclear deterrence plans against North Korean threats,” the AP reports.

Even Bankruptcy Won’t Save Rudy Giuliani

December 17, 2023 at 11:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “After Friday’s verdict, Mr. Giuliani was likely to file for bankruptcy protection, according to a lawyer familiar with his legal situation.”

“The damages he owes Ms. Freeman and Ms. Moss are considered an ‘intentional tort,’ meaning Mr. Giuliani was aware of what he was doing when he defamed the women by spreading baseless lies about election fraud, and bankruptcy would not erase his liability.”

“If Mr. Giuliani, who is 79, dies before Ms. Freeman and Ms. Moss receive compensation, they could still collect compensatory and emotional damages against his estate, Mr. Rabin said.”

DeSantis Ignores Campaign Turmoil

December 17, 2023 at 10:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A day after Ron DeSantis’s political operation suffered another major setback — the departure of a chief strategist — the Florida governor ignored the internal turmoil at an event in Iowa and did not take questions from reporters,” the New York Times reports.

“Perhaps there just wasn’t much left to say.”
