Fewer Young People Plan to Vote Next Year

December 5, 2023 at 11:50 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Fewer voters under age 30 plan to vote in the upcoming presidential election than did at this point in the 2020 election cycle, and less than one-third of those who identify as independents definitely plan to participate,” a newly released Harvard Youth Poll shows.

“A potential decline in participation by young voters could hurt President Biden next year in a hypothetical matchup against former president Donald Trump, given Biden draws more support from the demographic. But the poll shows larger declines in planned participation among young Republicans and independents than young Democrats.”

Cheney Says Trump Would Become Permanent President

December 5, 2023 at 11:20 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) told the Today Show that Donald Trump would install himself as a permanent president and refuse to leave office after the mandated two-term limit if he is reelected.

Said Cheney: “There’s no question. Absolutely. He’s already done it once… He’s already attempted to seize power, and he was stopped, thankfully, and for the good of the nation and the republic. But he said he will do it again. He’s expressed no remorse for what he did.”

The Danger Ahead

December 5, 2023 at 11:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Frum: “In his first term, Trump’s corruption and brutality were mitigated by his ignorance and laziness. In a second, Trump would arrive with a much better understanding of the system’s vulnerabilities, more willing enablers in tow, and a much more focused agenda of retaliation against his adversaries and impunity for himself. When people wonder what another Trump term might hold, their minds underestimate the chaos that would lie ahead.”

“By Election Day 2024, Donald Trump will be in the thick of multiple criminal trials. It’s not impossible that he may already have been convicted in at least one of them. If he wins the election, Trump will commit the first crime of his second term at noon on Inauguration Day: His oath to defend the Constitution of the United States will be a perjury.”

“A second Trump term would instantly plunge the country into a constitutional crisis more terrible than anything seen since the Civil War. Even in the turmoil of the 1960s, even during the Great Depression, the country had a functional government with the president as its head. But the government cannot function with an indicted or convicted criminal as its head. The president would be an outlaw, or on his way to becoming an outlaw. For his own survival, he would have to destroy the rule of law.”

Quote of the Day

December 5, 2023 at 10:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When you have a president who’s willing to go to war with the rule of law, to ignore the rulings of the courts if he doesn’t agree with them, that has the potential to unravel everything.”

— Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), talking to Rachel Maddow about Donald Trump.

Dozens of Abortion Clinics Have Closed

December 5, 2023 at 10:43 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Dozens of independently-owned reproductive health clinics shuttered in 2023, the year after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, according to a new report from the Abortion Care Network,” The Guardian reports.

“The group found that 23 independently owned clinics closed this year, on top of the 42 that shuttered in 2022, leaving over a dozen states, mainly in the American south and midwest, without a single brick-and-mortar clinic that provides abortion.”

Gingrich Warns Moderates About Impeachment Vote

December 5, 2023 at 10:30 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) suggested moderate Republicans may go along with a new attempt to launch a presidential impeachment inquiry against President Biden because they could face primary threats if they don’t, The Messenger reports.

Said Gingrich: “If you’re a Republican, do you really want to guarantee a primary opponent by voting against looking into Biden? This doesn’t impeach him. This simply gives Congress additional power to force the White House to reveal documents and force people to come testify.”

Mike Johnson Ties Ukraine Aid to Border Security

December 5, 2023 at 10:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said in a letter to the White House Tuesday that the House won’t pass aid to Ukraine unless Congress enacts “transformative change to our nation’s border security laws.”

This is the latest signal yet that U.S. assistance for Ukraine is in serious jeopardy.

There Will Be No Adults in the Room Next Time

December 5, 2023 at 10:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

McKay Coppins: “When Donald Trump first took office, he put a premium on what he called ‘central casting’ hires—people with impressive résumés who matched his image of an ideal administration official. Yes, he brought along his share of Steve Bannons and Michael Flynns. But there was also James Mattis, the decorated four-star general who took over the Defense Department, and Gary Cohn, the Goldman Sachs chief operating officer who was appointed head of the National Economic Council, and Rex Tillerson, who left one of the world’s most profitable international conglomerates to become secretary of state.”

“Trump seemed positively giddy that all of these important people were suddenly willing to work for him. And although his populist supporters lamented the presence of so many swamp creatures in his administration, establishment Washington expressed pleasant surprise at the picks. A consensus had formed that what the incoming administration needed most was “adults in the room.” To save the country from ruin, the thinking went, reasonable Republicans had a patriotic duty to work for Trump if asked. Many of them did.”

“Don’t expect it to happen again.”

Trump Turns to Fringe Theories as His Legal Defense

December 5, 2023 at 9:46 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

There’s never been a clear line between Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and his legal defense strategy while fighting 91 criminal charges.

But it’s an odd legal strategy to rely on conspiracy theories.

How Trump Gets Away With It

December 5, 2023 at 9:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Barton Gellman: “To begin with, there is little to stop Trump from firing Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is overseeing both of the federal investigations. Justice Department regulations confer a measure of protection on a special counsel against arbitrary dismissal, but he may be removed for ‘misconduct, dereliction of duty, incapacity, conflict of interest, or for other good cause.’ That last clause is a catchall that Trump could readily invoke.”

“The regulations state that a special counsel may be fired ‘only by the personal action of the Attorney General,’ but that would not stop Trump either. In the unlikely event that his handpicked attorney general were reluctant, he could fire the attorney general and keep on firing successors until he found one to do his bidding, as Richard Nixon did to get rid of Archibald Cox. Alternatively, Trump could claim—and probably prevail, if it came to a lawsuit—that the president is not bound by Justice Department regulations and can fire the special counsel himself.”

“Smith’s departure would still leave Trump’s federal criminal charges intact, but no law would prevent Trump from ordering that they be dropped. He could do so even with a trial in progress, right up to the moment before a jury returned a verdict. No legal expert I talked with expressed any doubt that he could get away with this.”

DeSantis Campaign in Turmoil

December 5, 2023 at 9:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Ron DeSantis’s 2024 US presidential campaign operation is going through another bout of turmoil just weeks before the first votes are cast in the crucial Iowa Republican caucuses,” the Financial Times reports.

“The Florida governor is fighting to regain momentum in his race to catch Donald Trump in the Republican primary, but has suffered new blows in the past fortnight, with the departure of two chief executives, the board chair, and other staff from the powerful political action committee fundraising group backing his bid.”

College Presidents to Testify on Antisemitism on Campuses

Three college presidents — from Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and MIT — will testify in Congress on Tuesday about how they have handled antisemitic incidents on their campuses since the Oct. 7 terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel, CBS News reports.

Trump’s Rhetoric Becomes Darker and More Threatening

December 5, 2023 at 8:29 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As he campaigns for another term in the White House, Donald Trump sounds like no other presidential candidate in U.S. history,” the New York Times reports.

“He has made baldly antidemocratic statements, praising autocratic leaders like China’s Xi Jinping and continuing to claim that the 2020 election was stolen… He has threatened to use the power of the presidency against his political opponents, including President Biden and Biden’s family. Trump frequently insults his opponents in personal terms, calling them ‘vermin,’ as well as ‘thugs, horrible people, fascists, Marxists, sick people.'”

“He has made dozens of false or misleading statements. He has advocated violence, suggesting that an Army general who clashed with him deserved the death penalty and that shoplifters should be shot. And he describes U.S. politics in apocalyptic terms, calling the 2024 election ‘our final battle’ and describing himself as his supporters’ ‘retribution.'”

December 5, 2023 at 8:26 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hamas Drugged Hostages Before Release

December 5, 2023 at 7:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Hamas gave Israeli hostages tranquilizers to make them appear to be in good spirits when their release was filmed,” Jewish Insider reports.

“The revelation came during a Knesset Health Committee meeting on the health conditions of the 110 civilian hostages returned to Israel from Gaza last week, in a swap for Palestinians held on terrorism-related charges.”

December 5, 2023 at 7:51 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Chirstian Ziegler, Florida’s Republican chairman and husband of Moms for Liberty co-founder Bridget Ziegler, was accused of rape by a woman who had previously had a “longstanding consensual three-way sexual relationship” with the Zieglers.

Said the chair of the local Pennsylvania group: “Our values are not aligning with the national organization.”

Tucker Carlson’s Producer Accused of Sexual Assault

December 5, 2023 at 7:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A top producer for Tucker Carlson who is helping build his new media company has been accused of sexually assaulting a former Fox News staffer when they both worked at the network 15 years ago,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“In a lawsuit, former Fox News staffer Andrew Delancey said Fox News then-producer Justin Wells invited him to come to his apartment before they were to join other people at a nearby bar. The alleged incident took place in late 2008, shortly after Delancey joined the network’s New York office.”

“After serving him a drink, Wells pushed Delancey onto his bed, forcibly kissed him and grabbed his genitals, Delancey alleged in the full lawsuit.”
