Trump Raises Tariffs on Canada to 35%

July 31, 2025 at 7:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump said the US will put a 35% tariff on some imports from Canada after trade negotiations between the two countries broke down,” Bloomberg reports.

“The new rate represents an increase from the 25% tariffs Trump imposed in early March under an emergency law.”

“But the US administration kept in place an exemption for goods traded under the rules of the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. US automakers and other companies with integrated North American supply chains had pushed for that carve-out, which has allowed US importers to continue bringing in the bulk of Mexican and Canadian products without duties.”

Sean Patrick Maloney Not Seeking Comeback

July 31, 2025 at 7:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The head of the Westchester Democrats shot down a rumor that former Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney is considering a run for the 17th Congressional District, following an eyebrow-raising report earlier this month that Maloney, the former chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, was looking to challenge Rep. Mike Lawler,” City and State New York reports.

“Maloney lost his race to Lawler in 2022 after jumping districts due to new lines, and Democrats lost control of the House under his watch.”

July 31, 2025 at 7:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in July removed references to President Donald Trump’s two impeachments from an exhibit display,” the Washington Post reports.

“A person familiar with the exhibit plans, who was not authorized to discuss them publicly, said the change came about as part of a content review that the Smithsonian agreed to undertake following pressure from the White House to remove an art museum director.”

July 31, 2025 at 5:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration is chastising Western allies who are preparing to recognize Palestinian statehood in response to the heightening humanitarian crisis in the region, cranking up criticism after President Donald Trump initially brushed off the push,” Politico reports.

Trump Plans $200 Million Overhaul of East Wing

July 31, 2025 at 5:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump, a longtime developer, is overseeing the construction of a $200 million, 90,000-square-foot ballroom that will remake the East Wing of the White House, effecting one of the biggest changes to ‘the People’s House’ in a century,” the Washington Post reports.

“The White House State Ballroom will seat 650 people, more than triple the capacity of the East Room, which is currently the largest room at the White House. Construction is set to begin in September and be done ‘long before’ the end of Trump’s second term.”

Wall Street Journal: “Trump has complained that the White House doesn’t have a large enough room to host large state dinners indoors.”

July 31, 2025 at 4:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Democratic strategist David Axelrod on Wednesday said former Vice President Kamala Harris appears to be preparing for another White House bid after last year’s November loss, The Hill reports.

Said Axelrod: “She will begin as the polling leader in any race for president just by dint of having been the nominee the last time. But a lot of Democrats want to turn the page on all of that and look forward, and so it‘s not going to be easy for her.”

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, promised to reveal to the public a “full breakdown of my follow the money investigation on Epstein so far” tonight at 9 p.m. ET on YouTube.

Said Wyden: “Last year, the Biden administration allowed our investigators to look at portions of the file. We did that at the Treasury building. Here is what it says.”

Trump Lashes Out at Fed Chair with Stream of Insults

July 31, 2025 at 3:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump on Thursday unleashed a fiery reaction after the Federal Reserve held interest rates steady, blasting Fed chair Jerome Powell with a stream of insults and suggesting corruption in the renovation of the central bank’s headquarters,” Axios reports.

Said Trump: “He is TOO LATE, and actually, TOO ANGRY, TOO STUPID, & TOO POLITICAL to have the job of Fed Chair.”

Unnoticed Document Alarms Justice Department Veterans

July 31, 2025 at 3:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Justice Department’s internal watchdog lost a crucial account from a whistle-blower detailing wrongdoing by political appointees for more than two months, prompting criticism that the agency’s inspector general has been inactive and silent during a time of deep turmoil,” the New York Times reports.

“The complaint, submitted in early May, accused top Justice Department officials like Emil Bove III of overseeing an effort to mislead judges and skirt or ignore court orders.”

“That the office received, but did not act upon, a potentially explosive set of allegations two weeks before news of Mr. Bove’s nomination to become a federal appeals court judge has raised serious concerns from current and former department lawyers that the unit responsible for policing not just the department but agencies like the F.B.I. and D.E.A. may have gone largely dormant.”

Kavanaugh Defends Court’s Terse Emergency Orders

July 31, 2025 at 3:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Justice Brett Kavanaugh said on Thursday that the Supreme Court should be wary of providing detailed explanations for its rulings on emergency applications like those arising from challenges to the Trump administration’s efforts to transform the federal government,” the New York Times reports.

Said Kavanaugh: “There can be a risk, in writing the opinion, of a lock-in effect, of making a snap judgment and putting it in writing, in a written opinion that’s not going to reflect the final view.”

Miami Can’t Delay Mayoral Election Until 2026

July 31, 2025 at 3:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A Florida state appeals court upheld a previous ruling that the election to pick the next mayor of Miami must take place in November after a city commission tried to delay it by a year,” Bloomberg reports.

Trump’s Tariffs Get Frosty Reception at Appeals Court

July 31, 2025 at 3:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Federal appeals court judges on Thursday sharply questioned President Donald Trump’s authority to impose sweeping tariffs on foreign trading partners under an unprecedented use of emergency powers,” Politico reports.

“Several judges of the Washington, D.C.-based Federal Circuit Court of Appeals repeatedly wondered how Trump could justify the broad tariffs using a 1977 law known as the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA, that presidents have used to set economic sanctions and other penalties on foreign countries — but never previously tariffs.”

July 31, 2025 at 2:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is trying to walk back his suggestion that the so-called Trump savings accounts for newborns could be a “back door” to start privatizing Social Security, ABC News reports.

Thune Looks to Beat Democrats at Their Own Game

July 31, 2025 at 1:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Majority Leader John Thune is now floating Democratic-authored proposals that would allow Senate Republicans to confirm President Donald Trump’s nominees more quickly,” Punchbowl News reports.

“Thune specifically referenced a proposal from Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), the previous Rules Committee chair, that would allow up to 10 nominees from the same panel to be considered en bloc on the floor.”

“Such a move would dramatically accelerate the confirmation of nominees and allow Republicans to more quickly eliminate the current backlog.”

Trump to Revive Presidential Fitness Test

July 31, 2025 at 1:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump will sign an executive order Thursday afternoon reinstating the national fitness assessment implemented in public schools from 1956 until 2013,” NBC News reports.

“The original Presidential Fitness Test was established under the Eisenhower administration in the 1950s and underwent several iterations in the decades to come. Students were generally asked to perform some combination of push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, running and reaching for their toes while seated. Starting in the 1960s, those with the highest fitness scores were eligible to receive a Presidential Physical Fitness Award.”

Trump’s Last Minute Tariff Hurdles

July 31, 2025 at 1:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “There are just hours to go before President Donald Trump’s deadline for scores of countries to strike trade deals with the U.S. or face steep tariffs. The president has managed to bend many trading partners to his will with lopsided (if vaguely sketched) agreements — and largely sidestepped, so far, the negative economic fallout that experts had predicted.”

“But as the clock ticks down, Trump’s protectionist agenda is also facing some fresh headwinds.”

Why Trump Broke With Bibi Over the Gaza Famine

July 31, 2025 at 12:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Atlantic: “Trump, two administration officials told us, has come to believe what many in Washington have thought for months: that Netanyahu is looking to prolong the conflict in Gaza, in open defiance of Trump’s wish for the war to end. The president and some of his aides think that Israel’s military objectives in Gaza were achieved long ago, and that Netanyahu has continued Israel’s assault, which has claimed tens of thousands of civilian lives, to maintain his own political power. The White House also believes that Netanyahu is taking steps that interfere with a potential cease-fire deal.”

“But the two officials said they did not anticipate that Trump would hold Netanyahu accountable in any meaningful sense.”

Life After the White House

July 31, 2025 at 12:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For more than five decades, Joe Biden’s existence was not only incredibly public but busy — his waking hours spent surrounded by a coterie of devoted aides and strategists, his calendar filled with speaking engagements and meetings, his home a bustling and buzzing swarm of activity,” Politico reports.

“Now, he’s on the other side of the mountain. And his life has entered a new phase that is quieter and smaller.”

“He’s staffed by only one or two aides and a small Secret Service detail. He holes up for hours at a time in Delaware working on his memoir with a new ghostwriter, while undergoing treatment for an aggressive form of prostate cancer. He flies commercial, with little of the luxury or exclusivity that is often associated with former heads of state.”
