Oklahoma Teachers Must Pass a Ideology Test

August 18, 2025 at 10:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Teachers from California and New York who want to work in Oklahoma public schools will be required to pass a certification test to prove they share the state’s conservative political values,” USA Today reports.

“Regardless of the subject or grade they teach, they’ll have to show they know ‘the biological differences between females and males’ and that they agree with the state’s American history standards, which includes elements of a conspiracy theory that the Democratic Party stole the 2020 presidential election from President Donald Trump, which fact checkers have said are false.”

Texas Democrats Have Returned Home

August 18, 2025 at 10:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Texas Democrats who left the state to stymie Republicans over redistricting have returned to Austin, ending a two-week standoff over President Donald Trump’s plan to carve out five new GOP congressional seats,” Politico reports.

“Their return to the state means the Texas House now has the sufficient number of legislators needed to pass a new map benefiting the GOP. Democrats had used the gambit to stall legislative business and bring national attention to Republicans’ decision to pursue off-cycle redistricting ahead of the midterms.”

Pam Bondi’s Power Play

August 18, 2025 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ruth Marcus profiles Attorney General Pam Bondi, “who may be one of Trump’s most powerful weapons, as she bends nearly every aspect of law enforcement to enable his agenda.”

“During the past six months, Bondi has presided over the most convulsive transition of power in the D.O.J. since the Watergate era, and perhaps in the hundred-and-fifty-five-year history of the department.”

“No Attorney General has been so aggressive in reversing policies or firing personnel, nor so willing to cede the department’s traditional independence from the White House.”

MSNBC to Drop ‘NBC’ from Branding

August 18, 2025 at 9:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

MSNBC will rebrand as My Source News Opinion World, or MS NOW, the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The shift is part of an effort to distance the network from its NBC heritage and establish its own identity ahead of the planned spinoff of the bulk of NBCUniversal’s cable networks later this year, including CNBC, USA, Oxygen and E!. MSNBC and some other channels that use the iconic peacock logo associated with NBCUniversal brands will also lose that imagery.”

Russian Tank Flies the American Flag

Drone footage shows a Russian armored vehicle assaulting Ukrainian lines while flying an American flag alongside the Russian tricolor flag.

Rating the Proposed New California Map

August 18, 2025 at 9:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball: “Much like the proposed Republican gerrymander of Texas, this map would give Democrats a chance to win up to five additional seats. Three of their targeted seats would be fairly easy pickups, while two of them would be more like Toss-ups.”

“Additionally, the map would help several incumbent Democrats in competitive seats. This makes it potentially more impactful overall than the Texas map, because Texas Republicans did not need to protect any of their incumbents.”

“Even if California is successful, though, Republicans still have more states beyond Texas where they can look for additional seats than Democrats do.”

Trump Will Lead ‘Movement’ to Eliminate Mail-In Ballots

August 18, 2025 at 9:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said that he would lead a movement to eliminate mail-in ballots and would sign an executive order to “help bring HONESTY to the 2026 Midterm Elections.”

“Mr. Trump has long opposed mail-in voting and said it was a source of fraud during the 2020 presidential election, which he lost to former President Joe Biden, William Barr, the attorney general at that time, said in 2020 that Mr. Trump’s assertions of widespread fraud couldn’t be proven.”

“Mr. Trump has maintained his opposition even after Republicans in the 2024 election made significant gains in mail voting when the party encouraged its supporters to make use of the practice.”

Who’s Calling Who a Fascist Now?

August 18, 2025 at 9:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Lindsey Cormack: “When it comes to writing the word ‘Nazi’ there is no evidence that Democrats in congress use this more than Republicans, in fact, Republicans do it more. But neither party is calling the other nazis in official newsletters.”

“For ‘fascist’ things are different.”

“Over the 15 year history of DCinbox, there aren’t that many messages using the word, ‘fascist’, 53 from Republicans and 20 from Democrats, but in the 119th Congress there are more official e-newsletters that use this word from Democrats.”

The Democrat Republicans Fear in Red-State America

August 18, 2025 at 9:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Rob Sand could almost pass for a Republican: He frequently quotes the Bible, owns two SIG Sauer handguns, goes deer hunting each fall and asks audiences to sing a few verses of “America the Beautiful” at the start of campaign events,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The only Democrat elected to statewide office in Iowa, Sand is trying to jump to the governor’s mansion from his current state auditor post. In the process, he is offering a potential template for others in his party on how to compete in red-state America.”

Josh Shapiro Gets a Challenger

August 18, 2025 at 8:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity (R) announced she is challenging Gov. Josh Shapiro (D), “giving establishment Republicans in the state a recruiting win,” Politico reports.

White House Asks If Zelensky Will Wear a Suit

August 18, 2025 at 8:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House asked Ukrainian officials if President Volodymyr Zelensky will wear a suit to his meeting with President Trump in the Oval Office on Monday,” Axios reports.

“Zelensky’s outfit became an issue ahead of his previous Oval Office meeting with Trump in March, which exploded into a diplomatic fiasco… Some U.S. officials thought at the time that the suit issue contributed somewhat to the disastrous outcome of the meeting.”

“The sources said Zelensky will show up at the White House on Monday wearing the same black jacket he wore to a NATO summit in the Netherlands in June.”

Candidates Just Don’t Matter as Much as You Think

August 18, 2025 at 8:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Bernstein: “The bottom line is that candidates just aren’t all that important to general election outcomes, especially at the presidential level. Most voters stick with their party; most independents are actually partisans; and most true independents tend to be swayed far more by ‘fundamentals’ such as the state of the economy than they are by the candidates’ personalities or campaign styles.”

“It doesn’t seem that way because U.S. political culture supports voting for the person, not the party, and so people not only are reluctant to say that they’re just knee-jerk voting for Democrats or Republicans but actually don’t think they’re doing so. And to most of us, it seems that we’re considering candidates individually and voting for the one we like the best. But it (almost always) ain’t so.”

Trump Remains the Wildcard for Ukraine Peace

August 18, 2025 at 7:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

From the Wall Street Journal editorial page:

“It’s encouraging that Mr. Trump invited Volodymyr Zelensky to meet at the White House on Monday, and that European leaders will join them. Maybe they can counter Mr. Putin’s lies about who started the war and the security guarantees required to end it. But the reality is that no one knows what the U.S. President will do or say.”

Democrats Have a Big Money Problem

August 18, 2025 at 6:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “After a brutal 2024 election and several months into rebuilding efforts under new party leadership, the DNC wildly trails the Republican National Committee by nearly every fundraising metric. By the end of June, the RNC had $80 million on hand, compared to $15 million for the DNC.”

“And the gap — nearly twice as large as it was at this stage in Trump’s first presidency — has only grown in recent months.”

Mike Lawler Doubles Down on Trump’s Megalaw

August 18, 2025 at 6:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) is betting big on President Donald Trump’s controversial megalaw — embracing the tax-and-spend package with a series of five ads as he runs for reelection in a pivotal swing district,” Politico reports.

“The commercials represent the first time that any House Republican — no less a vulnerable one like Lawler — is touting the measure on the airwaves directly to voters, according to the House GOP’s campaign arm. And he’s focusing on Medicaid provisions in the law that he expects will prove popular, countering Democratic attacks over health care spending cuts.”

Semafor: Republicans double down on Trump’s megabill.

Newsom Thinks Redistricting Will Give Him a Boost

August 18, 2025 at 6:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s team thinks the redistricting push could give his presidential ambitions a big boost, as he shows an angry Democratic base that he’s actually fighting back against Republicans in power, CNN reports.

But the Los Angeles Times notes there are big risks too if the special election fails in November.

Aaron Rupar and Noah Berlatsky: “Democrats have found their fight. Newsom is leading the charge.”

MAGA Eager for D.C. Patrols to Spread to Other Cities

August 18, 2025 at 6:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s MAGA movement sees his D.C. crackdown as being about more than just crime — it’s an opportunity to deal another setback to liberals by expanding the movement in urban areas,” Axios reports.

“Despite the protests over Trump’s stunning show of force on D.C.’s streets, MAGA’s most vocal voices believe that if the anti-crime push is successful — and Trump is certain to declare it so — it could win converts in cities and help expand the movement’s rural base.”

Playbook: “Right-wing social media is savoring clips of law enforcement taking action in the capital.”

Restaurant Reservations Plunge Across D.C.

August 18, 2025 at 6:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“D.C. restaurants saw a more than 25% drop in diners in the days following President Donald Trump’s takeover of the city’s police department,” WUSA reports.
