Two Very Different Messengers for Democrats

May 4, 2025 at 5:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The billionaire heir and the former bartender,” the AP reports.

“Many Democrats have been in and out of the spotlight as the party looks for effective counters to President Donald Trump and his second administration. But two disparate figures, Gov. JB Pritzker of Illinois and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, have seen their national profiles rise by delivering messages that excite a demoralized and fractured party.”

“The governor, a 60-year-old heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune, and the congresswoman, the 35-year-old with working-class roots, both won their first elections in 2018. Both have urged mass resistance and accused their party of not fighting more. Each has stood out enough to draw sharp retorts from Trump loyalists.”

Trump Defends Planned Military Parades

May 4, 2025 at 3:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Donald Trump told NBC News he plans to hold several events to celebrate U.S. military victories this year, including a “big, beautiful” military parade in Washington, D.C., to commemorate Flag Day, which also happens to fall on his birthday.

Said Trump: “My birthday happens to be on Flag Day. I view it for Flag Day, not necessarily my birthday. Somebody put it together. But no, I think we’re going to do something on June 14 maybe or somewhere around there. But I think June 14. It’s a very important day.”

And he defended the projected $45 million cost: “Peanuts compared to the value of doing it. We have the greatest missiles in the world. We have the greatest submarines in the world. We have the greatest army tanks in the world. We have the greatest weapons in the world. And we’re going to celebrate it.”

With a new wave of books hitting shelves, there’s a coordinated effort underway to reshape the narrative around President Biden’s decision to seek a second term.

According to the New York Times, one account reveals that Biden’s aides privately debated whether he should take a cognitive test in early 2024 to quiet growing concerns about his mental acuity.

Trump Criticized for Posting Image of Him as Pope

May 4, 2025 at 1:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York who is friendly with President Trump, told journalists in Rome Sunday morning that he hoped Trump “didn’t have anything to do with” the image posted to social media showing Trump as the Pope.

When asked if it offended him, Dolan said, “it wasn’t good.”

The New York State Catholic Conference said on X: “There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr. President. We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St. Peter. Do not mock us.”

Mother Jones: Leading Catholics condemn Trump meme depicting himself as Pope.

A Tory Wipeout in the U.K.

May 4, 2025 at 12:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sam Freedman: “These results were bad for Labour, but they were existential for the Conservatives, who lost all 19 of their councils and finished in fourth place in the BBC’s projected national vote share, just four points ahead of the Greens.”

“I’ve argued that the Tories are at risk of terminal collapse, but yesterday was the first time I really believed it was going to happen. They’ve lost control of heartland counties like Kent and Lincolnshire before, during the Major years, but this time they were almost entirely obliterated, and by another right-wing party, not a coalition of angry Labour and Lib Dem voters.”

“Never in their history have the Tories faced a government as unpopular as this one and lost ground, let alone this much ground.”

Quote of the Day

May 4, 2025 at 11:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I don’t think a beautiful baby girl that’s 11-years-old needs to have 30 dolls. I think they can have three dolls or four dolls… They don’t need to have 250 pencils. They can have five.”

— President Trump, in an interview with NBC News, doubling down on his comment that higher prices from tariffs won’t negatively impact families.

Virginia GOP Roiled by Scandal

May 4, 2025 at 11:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The conflict centers on the political future of lieutenant governor candidate John Reid, who resisted a week of pressure from some Virginia Republican Party leaders to step aside over allegations that he maintained a social media account with sexually explicit images of men. Reid, the first openly gay candidate for statewide office in Virginia, denied that he was connected to the photos and has argued that efforts to remove him from the Republican ticket are rooted in discrimination against his sexual orientation…”

“The fallout has created a rift within the state party as it faces an uphill battle in November. President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk’s war on the federal workforce has hit hard in a state where more than 150,000 federal employees live. The controversy, Republicans conceded, could tarnish Youngkin’s efforts to position himself as a potential 2028 presidential candidate, and it is widely viewed as a misstep.”

Tiffany Trump’s Father-in-Law Marginalized

May 4, 2025 at 11:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Massad Boulos “telegraphed during the transition that he would hold significant sway on the Trump administration’s foreign policy,” but so far has “struggled from the start to attain much influence, even as he has found some unexpected success along the way,” Politico reports.

What It Takes to Win—or Lose—in a Meeting With Trump

May 4, 2025 at 11:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Companies and institutions are honing a playbook for approaching an unpredictable president. They are showing up prepared to flatter, play ball on the Trump agenda and give him something in return for sparing them from economic pain or executive orders.”

“Since taking office in January, Trump and his senior aides have deployed executive power to punish enemies with tariffs and other diktats. That has spurred a range of chief executives and other leaders to plead their case directly to Trump…”

“The president is far more accessible than many of his predecessors and is often happy to take meetings directly, especially with chief executives he has seen quoted in newspapers or on television.”

Trump Says ‘Good Parts’ of Economy Are His

May 4, 2025 at 11:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump told NBC News that the “good parts” of economy are his but the “bad parts are the Biden economy.”

Dan Pfeiffer: “Trump wants to blame Biden for the bad economy, it won’t work.”

Biden Aides Decided Against Cognitive Test

May 4, 2025 at 10:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Months before President Joe Biden was forced to abandon his re-election campaign, his top White House aides debated having him undergo a cognitive test to prove his fitness for a second term but ultimately decided against the move, according to a forthcoming book,” the New York Times reports.

“The account illustrates the degree to which Mr. Biden’s top aides harbored deep fears about how voters viewed his age and mental acuity.”

“Mr. Biden’s aides were confident that he would pass a cognitive test, but they worried that the mere fact of his taking one would raise new questions about his mental abilities.”

Trump Suggests Vance or Rubio Could Succeed Him

May 4, 2025 at 10:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump, who has repeatedly teased the prospect of trying to serve an unconstitutional third term in office, went further than he had previously gone in saying that he did not intend to do that, despite the fact that the Trump Organization’s online store is selling Trump 2028 hats,” the New York Times reports.

Said Trump: “There are many people selling the 2028 hat, but this is not something I’m looking to do. I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody, ideally a great Republican, a great Republican to carry it forward.”

“Then he mentioned two Republicans who might fit the bill as his successor: Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.”

Trump Not Sure He Needs to Uphold Constitution

May 4, 2025 at 10:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Donald Trump, asked whether he believes that he needs to uphold the Constitution during his presidency, responded, “I don’t know,” the Washington Post reports.

“The comment came as Trump remained adamant that he wanted to ship undocumented immigrants out of the country and said it was inconceivable to hear millions of cases in court, insisting he needed the power to quickly remove people he said were murderers and drug dealers.”

Trump also did not rule out the use of military force to take Greenland, while saying it’s “highly unlikely” he would do so with Canada.

Trump Would Give TikTok Another Extension If Needed

May 4, 2025 at 10:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Donald Trump said he would give social-video platform TikTok another extension of a deadline to sell to a US owner if it was needed to reach a deal, Bloomberg reports.

Everyone Wants a Piece of Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’

May 4, 2025 at 6:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Laser-toting satellites capable of taking out missiles have long been the stuff of science fiction. President Trump is asking defense contractors to make the idea a reality,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Trump is looking to create a defense system that he calls the Golden Dome for America. It is envisioned to be a cutting-edge system of space and ground technology, with the goal of defending the U.S. against high-tech missile threats and potential attacks.”

“Taking cues from Israel’s Iron Dome, defense officials want the proposed shield to stretch from sea to sea, and from the Earth’s surface to space. Makers of aerospace equipment and weapons are already jockeying to grab a piece of the program.”

Trump Battles Academia, but Especially the Ivy League

May 4, 2025 at 6:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Trump’s attacks on this elite group — Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Brown, Dartmouth and the University of Pennsylvania — have endeared him to his political base. He is withholding, or threatening to withhold, billions of dollars in federal funding from six of the eight schools because, he says, they are citadels of antisemitism and liberal indoctrination…”

“The Trump administration has targeted many other colleges and universities for potential antisemitism, some 60 in all. And yet the eight Ivies are cultural touchstones for Mr. Trump. Beyond the politics is a complex brew of resentment and reverence that the president, an Ivy League graduate himself, has long harbored for a club that has never really accepted him.”

Republicans Use Obscure Law to Roll Back Regulations

May 4, 2025 at 6:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “In recent weeks, the GOP has pushed through a flurry of legislation to cancel regulations on matters large and small, from oversight of firms that emit toxic pollutants to energy efficiency requirements for walk-in freezers and water heaters.”

“To do so, they are employing a little-known 1996 law, the Congressional Review Act, that allows lawmakers to reverse recently adopted federal regulations with a simple majority vote in both chambers. It is a strategy they used in 2017 during Mr. Trump’s first term and are leaning on again as they work to find ways to steer around Democratic opposition and make the most of their governing trifecta of the House, the Senate and the White House.”

“But this time, Republicans are testing the limits of the law in a way that could vastly expand its use and undermine the filibuster, the Senate rule that effectively requires 60 votes to move forward with any major legislation.”

Elon Musk’s Starbase Is Becoming a Texas City

May 3, 2025 at 11:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The South Texas home of Elon Musk’s SpaceX rocket company is on its way to becoming an official city with a galactic name: Starbase,” the AP reports.

“A vote Saturday to formally organize Starbase as a city was being approved by a lopsided margin by a small group of voters who live there and are mostly Musk’s employees at SpaceX.”
