Haley Stevens’ Campaign Is Underwhelming Democrats

October 30, 2025 at 7:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democrats in Michigan and Washington are growing more critical of Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens’ Senate campaign, which has been dogged by public missteps, underwhelming fundraising and a rising concern that her more liberal primary opponents are running more dynamic races,” NOTUS reports.

“They fear that rather than establish herself as a clear front-runner, the establishment favorite has slumped to a de facto dead heat in the primary, putting the party at risk of nominating a potentially weaker general election candidate in the critical swing state next year.”

Trump Is Sleepwalking Into Political Disaster

October 30, 2025 at 7:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Chait: “The most glaring self-inflicted wound from Donald Trump’s first term in office was his decision in 2017 to let Paul Ryan and other traditional Republicans push him into a futile war to repeal the Affordable Care Act. From Ryan’s perspective, the decision made perfect sense: He and his allies despised the welfare state in general and the ACA in particular, and saw Trump’s presidency as a final chance to destroy the hated law before its roots grew too deep.”

“From Trump’s perspective, the move was a fiasco. By dint of the threat to repeal it and take health insurance from millions of Americans, the ACA became more popular. The repeal effort exposed the hollowness of his grand promises to give everybody ‘terrific’ insurance, and drove a midterm-election backlash that handed Democrats control of the House of Representatives.”

“Eight years on, Trump has plainly failed to learn his lesson.”

Rahm Emanuel… for President?

October 30, 2025 at 7:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ashley Parker: “The laws of political journalism dictate that any profile of Rahm Emanuel—who is all but declaring a 2028 presidential run—must crackle with Rahm Anecdotes that capture the propulsive, relentless behavior of a man who’s slugged his way through the political Thunderdome for four decades…”

“But this profile, Emanuel informed me, will not be one of those profiles.”

October 30, 2025 at 7:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) “is taking further steps toward launching a Senate campaign, including spending significant money on polling and meeting with a potential campaign manager,” Politico reports.

Trump’s Search for Eternity

October 30, 2025 at 7:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Trump is hardly the first 79-year-old to dwell on what may come after he departs this mortal coil — or to wonder whether he has earned entry into the pearly gates. But it is so unlike Mr. Trump to express self-doubt that his public rumination has raised questions. What is on his mind lately that makes him fear his fate in the hereafter? What sins might he be regretting?”

“He has not clarified his thinking, at least not on camera, nor for that matter has he shown any public signs of repentance for scandals that he may believe hold him back from grace. And yet the president’s curious contemplation comes at a time when Mr. Trump seems to be seeking a form of immortality. If absolution is out of reach, perhaps there are more achievable ways of living beyond his natural time on this earth.”

“And so, the man who over a long career in business slapped his name on buildings around the world now seems intent on leaving his mark in even more grandiose fashion.”

How a Newspaper Botched a Story on the Mayor’s Race

October 30, 2025 at 6:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Semafor has the backstory of how the Times of London misquoted Bill de Blasio: A reporter got the wrong email address for the former New York City mayor, and instead emailed Long Island wine importer Bill DeBlasio.

Said the man: “I never once said I was the mayor. He never addressed me as the mayor. So I just gave him my opinion.”

October 30, 2025 at 6:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New Jersey Governor’s Race Looks Very Close

October 30, 2025 at 6:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Emerson College poll in New Jersey finds Mikie Sherrill (D) barely head of Jack Ciattarelli (R) in the governor’s race, 49% to 48% with just 2% undecided.

Vanity Fair: New Jersey’s squeaker of a governor’s race shows just how far Democrats could fall.

Bloomberg Endorses Cuomo for Mayor

October 30, 2025 at 6:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Billionaire former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg endorsed Andrew Cuomo’s independent bid for mayor Wednesday — a nod that arrives as the ex-governor is trying to build momentum against democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani,” Politico reports.

CNN: In his last stand, Andrew Cuomo zigzags between optimism and despair about NYC race.

Trump Cuts Tariffs on China

October 30, 2025 at 5:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump said Thursday that he would cut tariffs on imports from China, signaling that the highly anticipated summit here with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, had lowered the temperature in the trade war between the world’s two largest economies,” the Washington Post reports.

“Trump said Chinese imports would now be subject to a 47 percent tariff, down 10 percentage points from the average rate before the meeting. In exchange, Xi agreed to delay restrictions on rare earth minerals for a year, Trump said, granting the United States a reprieve from controls that could jeopardize supply chains for cellphones, fighter jets and many other products.”

Said Trump: “I would say on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the best, I would say the meeting was a 12.”

Playbook: “As ever, the rhetoric is strong but the detail is … somewhat lacking. The two sides’ quid pro quo on tariffs, soybeans, fentanyl and rare earths is positive and broadly as expected, taking us closer to where we were before. But alarm bells will be ringing among GOP hawks over any significant increase in chips sales to China — and Trump was hazy about what had been agreed.”

Bloomberg: China and U.S. reach one-year truce on tariffs and rare earths.

Farm State Republicans Reach Their Breaking Point

October 30, 2025 at 5:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For President Donald Trump, it was a brief musing to reporters on Air Force One about his plans to import beef from Argentina. For dozens of farm-state Republicans who have held their tongues as key Trump policies battered their constituents, it was the final straw,” Politico reports.

Trump Returns as Shutdown Drags On

October 30, 2025 at 5:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump had his fun, with red carpet welcomes, impromptu dances, the gift of a golden crown and a yet another Nobel Peace Prize nomination,” CNN reports.

“But the trophies from his Asia tour won’t count for much when he arrives home Thursday just as the monthlong government shutdown takes its bitterest turn yet amid the worst domestic political crisis of his second term.”

Trump Nominee Withdraws Over Russian Ties

October 30, 2025 at 5:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration’s nominee for a top federal position promoting international commerce has withdrawn his candidacy amid scrutiny of his role as a senior executive at a steel-trading business co-owned by one of Russia’s richest oligarchs, and his relations by marriage to a Russian family with extensive ties to the Kremlin,” the Washington Post reports.

Democrats Accuse Trump of ‘Weaponizing Hunger’

October 30, 2025 at 5:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When SNAP benefits run out on Nov. 1, 42 million Americans are going to struggle to put food on the table — and Democrats allege the Trump administration has specifically designed that outcome by ‘weaponizing hunger,’” Axios reports.

A Book Tour Most Authors Would Not Dream Of

October 30, 2025 at 5:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“White House press secretaries are supposed to know how to talk to the press. But that has not been evident this week for Karine Jean-Pierre, whose publicity tour for Independent, her book about her time behind the briefing room lectern of the Biden White House, has gone viral, and not in a good way,” the New York Times reports.

“It is possible, of course, that the adage that all publicity is good publicity will prove true and result in spectacular sales for her book, subtitled ‘A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines.’”

“But so far Ms. Jean-Pierre, who as Mr. Biden’s press secretary relied heavily on talking points although without the insults from the podium common today, has come across in interviews as erratic and defensive rather than as a forceful champion for her old boss.”

Dutch Far-Right Party Loses Seats

October 30, 2025 at 5:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A center-left party and the far-right party of Geert Wilders were projected on Thursday morning to each win the same number of legislative seats in the Dutch election, according to the official count reported by the Dutch newswire ANP, a result that offered a strong rebuke to Mr. Wilders’s party,” the New York Times reports.

“The center-left Democrats 66, a socially progressive party with a centrist economic policy, had appeared likely to be the largest party when exit polls reported on Wednesday night.”

October 29, 2025 at 10:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Radio host Mark Levin slammed Donald Trump’s allies who re calling for a third term, The Independent reports.

Said Levin: “Nobody gets to run for a third term. Nobody.”

He took specific aim at Steve Bannon: ‘The guy pled guilty to a felony, ripping off little old ladies raising money for a wall that was never built. He’s telling us Trump’s gonna run for a third term.”
