What Did Democrats Win from the Shutdown Fight?

April 8, 2026 at 12:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Time: “As part of the deal to restore funding for most of DHS, Democrats agreed to forgo the reforms they had been demanding for nearly two months, winding down a shutdown that has inconvenienced thousands of travellers and prompted resignations by hundreds of TSA workers. There is still no ban on masked agents, no requirement that immigration officers obtain judicial warrants to enter homes, and no new use-of-force standards.”

“The episode has raised a central question that cuts through the party’s claim of success: What, exactly, did Democrats win?”

Israel Escalates Attacks on Lebanon

April 8, 2026 at 12:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Israel launched on Wednesday what it said was the heaviest wave of bombardment in Lebanon yet in its monthlong war against Iran-backed Hezbollah as a U.S.-Israeli cease-fire with Iran took effect,” the New York Times reports.

“The sharp escalation — with more than 100 airstrikes in the space of just 10 minutes — punctuated an announcement by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel that Lebanon would be excluded from the truce with Iran.”

CNN: Israel launches fresh strike in Beirut.

Axios: U.S. says Iran ceasefire doesn’t apply to Israeli strikes in Lebanon.

Your Personal Data Is Already for Sale

A new report says a member of Elon Musk's DOGE task force may have taken sensitive Social Security data to a private-sector job. Troubling — but data brokers already collect and sell your social security number, birth date, home address and more to anyone willing to pay.

You can’t stop data brokers — but you can make them delete your information.

Incogni does the work for you — contacting brokers and demanding removal of your personal data, including from hard-to-clean People Search sites.

It’s a simple way to reduce identity-theft risk, cut spam calls and keep sensitive financial and health data private.

April 8, 2026 at 9:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Trump is a military moron.”

— Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.), quoted by the Wall Street Journal.

Hegseth Declares ‘Decisive’ Victory Over Iran

April 8, 2026 at 9:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared a “decisive military victory” over Iran, saying the country’s missile program was functionally destroyed, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Trump Finds Offramp But the Causes of War Unresolved

April 8, 2026 at 9:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Trump’s tactic of escalating his rhetoric to astronomical levels certainly helped him find an offramp he had been seeking for weeks. That success alone may fuel his belief that the tactics he learned in the New York real estate world — ignore old conventions, make maximalist demands — works in geopolitics as well.”

“Without question, it was a down-to-the-wire tactical victory, one that should, at least temporarily, get oil, fertilizer and helium flowing again through the Strait of Hormuz, and calm markets that feared a global energy shock would lead to a global recession.”

“But it resolved none of the fundamental issues that led to the war.”

Trump Threatens 50% Tariffs on Nations Helping Iran

April 8, 2026 at 9:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said the U.S. will impose tariffs of 50% on “any and all” goods imported to the country from any nation “supplying military weapons to Iran”, CNBC reports.

Trump said in a Truth Social post that any country found to be supplying Iran with weapons would be subject to the levy “immediately”, with no “exclusions or exemptions.”

The Madness of the Madman Theory

April 8, 2026 at 9:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Janan Ganesh looks at the origins of the “madman theory” of diplomacy during the Nixon administration and notes “there are reasons to think the ploy will be even less successful now than it was then.”

“For one thing, Nixon made his threats through private channels. If he decided to back down from them, he would not lose face in front of the entire world. In contrast, Trump’s threats to erase a civilization could scarcely be more public. The pressure to make good on them at some point is correspondingly higher. It might intensify after his agreement to a conditional ceasefire with Iran on Taco Tuesday — sorry, April 7. This is why games of bluff are better played behind closed doors.”

“Another difference is that mid-20th century Vietnam was not central to the world economy. Early-21st century Iran unmistakably is.”

Trump Looks Frantic

April 8, 2026 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Frum: “Trump’s Iran war has entered its seventh week, with no resolution in sight. The United States and Israel have gained control over Iran’s skies, striking wherever and whatever they wish. But Trump seems never to have seriously considered Iran’s obvious countermoves—despite the decades the intelligence community has spent war-gaming such scenarios. He’s now contending with an Iran-imposed global energy crisis to which he can offer no solution except blood-curdling threats.”

The 25th Amendment Isn’t Coming to Save Us

April 8, 2026 at 8:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Pfeiffer: “Most people believe that a majority of the cabinet and the Vice President can simply get together and remove the President from office. It doesn’t exactly work that way.”

“The Vice President and a majority of the cabinet send a notice to Congress stating that the President is unable to perform his duties. At that point, the Vice President becomes Acting President.”

“The President then has the opportunity to dispute this. The Vice President and cabinet must reaffirm their declaration, and Congress must assemble and vote within 21 days. A two-thirds majority in both chambers is required to keep the Acting President in place.”

Iran Ceasefire Leaves Unanswered Questions

April 8, 2026 at 8:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “The big question this morning is what Donald Trump gained from launching a war that killed thousands (including 13 US service members), shook the global economy, frayed relationships with allies, and damaged his political standing at home.”

“At first glance, not much.”

Trump Probes Top Medical Schools Over Diversity

April 8, 2026 at 8:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “President Donald Trump’s administration has opened a new front in its campaign to reshape US colleges, homing in on racial diversity at some of the top medical schools in the country.”

“The Department of Justice has launched investigations into medical programs at Stanford, the University of California San Diego and Ohio State University, accusing them of giving a leg up to minority applicants.”

What the Astronauts See That Trump Cannot

April 8, 2026 at 8:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gal Beckerman: “Pictures of the Earth from the Artemis II mission offer a sense that humans are united. If only a bellicose president could feel the same.”

Quote of the Day

April 8, 2026 at 6:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A big day for World Peace!”

— President Trump, on Truth Social, just 16 hours after threatening to erase an entire civilization off the face of the planet.

Trump Is Already Moving On

April 8, 2026 at 6:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “Given the unpopularity of this war in America, the devastating impact on oil prices, the rapidly worsening global economic outlook and Trump’s looming May 14 summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, it’s hard to imagine Trump reviving his bombing campaign. Oil prices have already plummeted below $100 a barrel following the ceasefire announcement. Stock markets are surging. He’s not going to want to go back.”

“So brace yourselves for the White House comms blitz. Your zone is about to be flooded with Trump world messages that America won the war, even before this two-week negotiation gets underway.”

Trump to AFP last night: “This is a total and complete victory. 100 percent. No question about it.”

April 8, 2026 at 6:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump is in no hurry to tap a permanent attorney general to replace Pam Bondi following her ouster, according to people familiar with the matter, allowing Todd Blanche time to settle into his role as the Justice Department’s acting chief,” Bloomberg reports.

April 8, 2026 at 6:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment
