Quote of the Day

March 20, 2026 at 10:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I think right now at least just kind of keeping a stiff upper lip. Maybe you take one less trip to Starbucks and so that gas goes a little further.”

— Minnesota U.S. Senate candidate Michele Tafoya (R), quoted by NewsNation, on rising gas prices.

Trump Gives a Lifeline to an Enemy

March 20, 2026 at 10:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump has managed to construct one of the most contradictory policy moves of his presidency: easing sanctions on Iran to help stabilize global oil markets — even as U.S. forces remain engaged in a war against that very same country.

It’s a stunning reversal of basic logic.

Trump Is Getting Drilled, Baby, Drilled

March 20, 2026 at 10:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Andrew Egger: “Trump is right to be worried. And he’s right in particular to be completely freaked out by the possibility of more attacks from either side on the region’s energy infrastructure. Putting LNG and oil production facilities on the legitimate-targets list would mean heavy long-term damage to the energy economy.”

“Trump knows how little buy-in the American public has for this war even on its own merits, and how little pain people will be willing to suffer on its behalf. For him, the single most important thing he needs to accomplish in this conflict is a crisp end date—preferably very soon.”

“Pretty much his worst-case scenario would be higher energy prices for the rest of his term because the Middle East’s energy infrastructure had been reduced to rubble.”

U.S. Prosecutors Investigate Colombia’s President

March 20, 2026 at 10:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “President Gustavo Petro of Colombia, who has had a volatile relationship with President Trump, is under criminal investigation by at least two U.S. federal prosecutors’ offices.”

“The investigations, which have not been previously reported, were being conducted by the U.S. attorney’s offices in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and they have involved prosecutors who focus on international narcotics trafficking as well as agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration and Homeland Security Investigations.”

Is Russian Fuel Headed for Cuba?

March 20, 2026 at 9:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “A Russian tanker full of oil is moving through the Atlantic Ocean and drawing scrutiny to see if it is heading to Cuba, a potential test of the U.S. oil blockade of the island.”

“The ultimate destination of the tanker is still unknown. But if Russia is attempting to send oil to Cuba, as some analysts suspect, it could represent a critical lifeline for the Cuban government — and a new potential showdown between two superpowers over the small island nation.”

The ‘ModSquad’ Endorses Haley Stevens in Michigan

March 20, 2026 at 9:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Axios: “ModSquad, a group of nearly a dozen moderate Senate Democrats, is endorsing Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Democratic primary.”

“Why it matters: The Democratic party is fracturing over its Senate primary in Michigan — a state that’s an important hold for the party in the November midterms — with moderates coalescing behind Stevens while their left splits between two other candidates.”

Iran Says It Has Not Halted Weapons Production

March 20, 2026 at 9:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Iran projected defiance as the war neared the three-week mark, with the new supreme leader declaring that ‘safety must be taken away’ from the country’s enemies while its armed forces vowed to pursue them even in tourist spots.”

“The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps denied that U.S. and Israeli airstrikes have crippled Iran’s ability to produce missiles—a statement attributed to a spokesman who had already been killed in a strike hours earlier.”

Trump Had No Plan B for Iran

March 20, 2026 at 9:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Tom Nichols: “Trump did seem to have an overarching goal at the start of the war: regime change. In a video he released during the first night of the attack, he told the Iranian authorities to surrender and called on the Iranian people to rise up against their government.”

“Unfortunately, the regime in Tehran seems to be recovering and, even worse, consolidating power. The American intelligence community has reportedly issued an assessment that the regime ‘will remain intact and possibly even emboldened, believing it stood up to Trump and survived.'”

“Trump now appears lost, unable to comprehend how a blockbuster movie that he scripted out, one in which he cast himself as the Liberator of Iran, has turned into a poorly received miniseries that might yet be renewed for another dreary season.”

U.S. Military Ramps Up to Clear Strait of Hormuz

March 20, 2026 at 9:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “U.S. warplanes and attack helicopters are ramping up assaults against Iranian drones and naval vessels in an escalating military effort to clear the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic waterway that Iran has effectively closed to most Western shipping.”

American Farmers Are Feeling the Squeeze

March 20, 2026 at 9:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Economist: “America’s rural heartland is unusually loyal to Mr Trump. In counties where farming generates at least a quarter of earnings, he won 78% of the vote in 2024, improving on his margins in the previous two presidential elections. But a war that makes farmers’ jobs harder may test that allegiance.”

Finland Is the Happiest Country

March 20, 2026 at 9:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gallup: “Finland once again leads the world as the happiest country, according to the latest World Happiness Report, marking its ninth consecutive year at No. 1.”

“The Nordic nations continue to dominate the top of the rankings, with Iceland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway joining Finland in filling five of the top six spots this year.”

Cuba Is Near Collapse

March 20, 2026 at 9:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “Signs of hardship are everywhere in Cuba. The fuel crunch is exacerbating problems with an already decrepit grid. The country suffered two major blackouts — one of them island-wide — in March alone. Gasoline is being rationed, tourist resorts are being shuttered, and the government has told airlines they won’t be able to refuel.”

“The United Nations said that the US fuel blockade is keeping the government from delivering food to its most vulnerable citizens, and is pushing it to the edge of a humanitarian crisis.”

“China, Brazil, Mexico and others are providing — or have pledged to provide — food and humanitarian aid. But without major fuel shipments, it’s unclear how long Cuba’s government can remain afloat.”

The Economist: Cuba’s broken economy leaves it at Donald Trump’s mercy.

AOC Not Likely to Endorse Primary Challengers

March 20, 2026 at 9:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) told Axios she is keeping the door open to endorsing challengers to her House Democratic colleagues “if someone crosses some huge line.”

But she added that “it would have to be kind of an egregious thing.”

Trump Mulls Risky Kharg Island Takeover

March 20, 2026 at 9:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Axios: “The Trump administration is considering plans to occupy or blockade Iran’s Kharg Island to pressure Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.”

“President Trump can’t end the war, at least on his terms, until he breaks Iran’s chokehold on shipping through the strait. In the meantime, global energy prices are surging.”

Israel Will Avoid Attacks on Iran’s Energy Infrastructure

March 20, 2026 at 9:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday said Israel would avoid future attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure, after a pair of strikes on key Middle East gas operations sent energy prices soaring.”

Trump Turns U.S. Census on Its Head

March 20, 2026 at 7:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The 2030 U.S. census is poised to look very different than the one released in 2020. It’s not necessarily because the country’s demographics are radically changing — but because the Trump administration is radically changing who it wants to count and how it’s counting them,” NOTUS reports.

“President Donald Trump has renewed his calls for the U.S. Census Bureau to not count undocumented residents — a demand that remains legally tenuous. And last month, the administration announced changes to field testing, reducing the locations it will run test surveys and only offering those surveys in English.”

Travel Chaos Will Only Worsen

March 20, 2026 at 7:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Airline and transportation officials are warning that the nation is on the verge of a widespread meltdown unless Congress comes to an agreement to end the partial government shutdown impacting the Department of Homeland Security by this time next week,” NewsNation reports.

Trade with Cuba Collapses

March 20, 2026 at 6:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “The stranglehold is disrupting the lives of Cuba’s 11 million residents, who are enduring massive blackouts and a breakdown in medical care due to a lack of fuel.”
