Biden Scrounges for Ways to Break Through

April 14, 2022 at 8:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“With his sweeping domestic agenda on hold and images of horror in Ukraine dominating headlines, President Joe Biden is scrounging for ways to demonstrate that he’s still making progress for Americans at a time when many feel the country is heading in the wrong direction,” the AP reports.

“Six months out from the midterm elections, Biden’s team is betting that smaller, discrete announcements can break through to voters better than talk of transformational plans that are so far only aspirational. And as the global focus is on Ukraine, the White House is eager for Americans to see Biden tackling the kitchen table issues important to them –- none more so than the searing inflation exacerbated by the Russian invasion.”

White House Projects Calm About Covid

April 14, 2022 at 7:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House is publicly arguing that the country has finally arrived at a promising new stage in the pandemic fight — one that a recent spike in Covid cases won’t spoil,” Politico reports.

“Underneath the displays of confidence, however, is simmering anxiety. Biden officials and others close to the federal response privately acknowledged that the next few weeks will determine whether the White House has truly entered a new era — or managed to misread the moment once again.”

Secret Service Agents Clash Over Dog Bites

April 14, 2022 at 7:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Secret Service agents were outraged last year by the White House’s attempt to downplay bite injuries caused by then-first dog Major — even trying to get President Biden to personally pay for a damaged coat, newly released documents show,” the New York Post reports.

“Secret Service leaders also sought to keep attack details out of official paperwork — at one point rejecting an agent’s ‘excessively detailed’ account to avoid upsetting the first family — after Major bit agents on eight consecutive days.”

Ron DeSantis Takes on Disney In National Culture War

April 14, 2022 at 7:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “DeSantis’s decision to go after the Walt Disney Co. for its opposition to a bill banning the teaching of gender-related issues to kids younger than third grade — dubbed the ‘don’t say gay’ bill by its foes — opens a new front in the growing culture wars being waged by top Republican officials around the country in a midterm election year.”

“In states from Texas to California, Republicans are increasingly targeting issues important to their base, from abortion rights to medical care for transgender youth and the teaching of race’s impact on U.S. laws. In some cases, they are heavily restricting or banning those things.”

Ed Kilgore: Why Republicans are turning an easy election into a culture war.

Quote of the Day

April 14, 2022 at 7:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I knew Putin very well. Almost as well as I know you, Sean… I will tell you, we talked about it, we talked about it a lot, he did want Ukraine, but I said, ‘You’re not going into Ukraine.’ He would never, ever have gone into Ukraine.”

— Donald Trump, bragging about his relationship with Russian president Vladimir Putin with Sean Hannity.

Supply Chain Hurdles Will Outlast Pandemic

April 14, 2022 at 7:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The coronavirus pandemic and its ripple effects have snarled supply chains around the world, contributing to shipping backlogs, product shortages and the fastest inflation in decades,” the New York Times reports.

“But in a report released Thursday, White House economists argue that while the pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in the supply chain, it didn’t create them — and they warned that the problems won’t go away when the pandemic ends.”

Russia’s flagship in the Black Sea has suffered “significant damage,” the Russian defense ministry acknowledged Thursday, as Ukraine said it attacked the vessel with a shore-to-ship missile, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Biden Approval Down Most Among Younger Voters

April 14, 2022 at 7:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gallup: “Joe Biden’s recent job approval ratings, which are averaging 14 points lower than those early in his presidency, have declined far more among younger than older generations of Americans.”

“In fact, Biden’s job approval has changed relatively little among baby boomers and not at all among traditionalists. As a result, older Americans are now more likely to approve of the president than younger Americans are.”

Philip Bump: Why has Biden’s approval plunged with young people?

U.S. Weighs Sending Top Official to Meet with Zelensky

April 14, 2022 at 7:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Biden administration is holding internal discussions about sending a high-level official to Kyiv to show further support to Ukraine,” Politico reports.

“No decision on the potential visit has yet been made as deliberations continue inside the White House. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris remain candidates to represent the U.S. in the Ukrainian capital, though it’s far more likely that a Cabinet member like Secretary of State Antony Blinken or Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will go.”

DeSantis Releases New Florida Map

April 14, 2022 at 7:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday kept his promise and proposed a redistricting map that blows up the state’s current congressional districts, creates four additional Republican-leaning seats, and eliminates at least two districts now held by Black Democrats in North and Central Florida,” the Tampa Bay Times reports.

“The map would create 20 Republican-performing districts and eight Democrat-leaning districts and is expected to be quickly approved by the Republican-controlled Legislature next week when it meets in a special session called by the governor. The current split of the Florida congressional delegation is 16 Republicans and 11 Democrats, and the state gets an additional district because of its population growth.”

April 14, 2022 at 6:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel is considering running for reelection for a fourth term leading her party in 2023, and she has received encouragement from former President Donald Trump,” Politico reports.

“Should McDaniel serve another term, she would become the longest serving RNC chair in recent history.”

Iowa No Longer Guaranteed to Be First Vote

April 14, 2022 at 6:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iowa Democrats are no longer guaranteed a place at the front of the presidential nominating calendar after a panel of Democratic National Committee members voted Wednesday to effectively strip them of their coveted first-in-the-nation status,” the Des Moines Register reports.

“Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina currently have waivers from the national party to hold their nominating contests before the rest of the country. The plan removes all four states from that early voting window and requires them — along with any others that want to hold early contests — to apply for a new waiver.”

Colleagues Worry Feinstein Is Now Mentally Unfit to Serve

April 14, 2022 at 6:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When a California Democrat in Congress recently engaged in an extended conversation with Sen. Dianne Feinstein, they prepared for a rigorous policy discussion like those they’d had with her many times over the last 15 years,” the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

“Instead, the lawmaker said, they had to reintroduce themselves to Feinstein multiple times during an interaction that lasted several hours.”

“Rather than delve into policy, Feinstein, 88, repeated the same small-talk questions, like asking the lawmaker what mattered to voters in their district, they said, with no apparent recognition the two had already had a similar conversation.”

April 14, 2022 at 6:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Elon Musk offered to buy Twitter for $54.20 a share in cash, or about $43 billion, Axios reports.

Said Musk: “I am not playing the back-and-forth game. I have moved straight to the end. It’s a high price and your shareholders will love it.”

He added: “If the deal doesn’t work, given that I don’t have confidence in management nor do I believe I can drive the necessary change in the public market, I would need to reconsider my position as a shareholder.”

Yellen Warns Nations Staying Neutral on Ukraine

April 13, 2022 at 7:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said countries that maintain their ties to Russia after its invasion of Ukraine risk facing isolation from the global economy, sending a warning shot to nations that have so far remained neutral in the conflict,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said Yellen: “In this moment, where you have a dictator brutally invading another country targeting civilians, you have to contemplate what side of history you want to be on. And that is true for any country around the world.”
