Republicans Try Once Again to Repeal Obamacare

June 2, 2025 at 9:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Congressional Republicans are pursuing changes to the Affordable Care Act that would mean 10.7 million fewer Americans using its insurance marketplaces and Medicaid, a huge reduction that some view as a way to accomplish part of the health-care coverage cancellation that failed in 2017,” the Washington Post reports.

“They’re not branding it a repeal of President Barack Obama’s signature health care law this time around, and this year’s effort wouldn’t erase its marketplaces or Medicaid expansion. Congress tried that the last time President Donald Trump was in office but abandoned it amid an outcry from the health care industry, advocates and voters.”

“But the GOP plan making its way through Congress would sharply increase the number of people without health insurance, largely by narrowing the path for poor Americans to gain coverage and making it easier for them to be booted off it.”

Trump Shows No Sign of Retreat on Tariffs

June 2, 2025 at 9:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The legitimacy of President Trump’s tariffs is being questioned by U.S. courts, but the president is showing no signs of backing off his favorite tool,” the New York Times reports.

“On Wednesday, the tariffs that Mr. Trump imposed on foreign steel and aluminum are set to double to 50 percent, a move that the president has said will better protect domestic metal makers.”

“In the coming days, the U.S. government is set to face off with states and businesses that have sued over the president’s tariffs, and both sides will be required to submit more information as judges work toward final decisions on the legality of Mr. Trump’s steepest tariffs.”

Trump Always Chickens Out on Foreign Policy Too

June 2, 2025 at 9:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gideon Rachman: “The TACO phrase was drawn to Trump’s attention in a press conference last week. He was not amused and called it a ‘nasty question.'”

“All the nastier, perhaps, for being accurate. In fact, ‘TACO’ is not just a useful heuristic for investors. It also turns out to be a key to analyzing Trump’s foreign policy.”

“As Jeremy Shapiro of the European Council on Foreign Relations points out in a recent paper, Trump enjoys issuing blood-curdling threats of the use of force. But he very rarely follows through.”

China Is Causing Shortages of Rare Earth Magnets

June 2, 2025 at 8:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Two decades ago, factories in Indiana that turned rare earth metals into magnets moved production to China — just as demand for the magnets was starting to soar for everything from cars and semiconductors to fighter jets and robots,” the New York Times reports.

“The United States is now reckoning with the cost of losing that supply chain. The Chinese government abruptly halted exports of rare earth magnets to any country on April 4 as part of its trade war with the United States.”

Ukraine Rewrites the Rules of War

June 2, 2025 at 8:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Economist: “According to sources, the mission was 18 months in the making. Russia had been expecting attacks by larger fixed-wing drones at night and closer to the border with Ukraine. The Ukrainians reversed all three variables, launching small drones during the day, and doing so far from the front lines. Ukraine had launched drones from within Russia previously; the difference was the scale and combined nature of the operations.”

“Commentators close to the Ukrainian security services suggest that as many as 150 drones and 300 bombs had been smuggled into Russia for the operations. The quadcopters were apparently built into wooden cabins, loaded onto lorries and then released after the roofs of the cabins were remotely retracted. The drones used Russian mobile-telephone networks to relay their footage back to Ukraine, much of which was released by the gleeful Ukrainians. They also used elements of automated targeting, the accounts claim…”

“Western armed forces are watching closely. For many years they have concentrated their own aircraft at an ever smaller number of air bases, to save money, and have failed to invest in hardened hangars or shelters that could protect against drones and missiles. America’s own strategic bombers are visible in public satellite imagery, sitting in the open.”

South Korean Election Aims to Bring Back Stability

“South Koreans are set to finally choose a new president after the nation’s worst constitutional crisis in decades,” Bloomberg reports.

Iran Poised to Dismiss U.S. Nuclear Proposal

June 2, 2025 at 8:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iran is poised to reject a U.S. proposal to end a decades-old nuclear dispute, an Iranian diplomat said on Monday, dismissing it as a ‘non-starter’ that fails to address Tehran’s interests or soften Washington’s stance on uranium enrichment,” Reuters reports.

Senate May Kill House GOP Pet Policy

June 2, 2025 at 7:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A provision buried in the Republicans “big, beautiful” tax bill that would limit courts’ ability to enforce nationwide injunctions is unlikely to make it through the Senate, the Washington Post reports.

Why Did Trump Pull NASA Administrator Nomination?

June 2, 2025 at 7:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump reportedly pulled Jared Isaacman’s nomination as NASA administrator after being told about his donations to Democrats, but the New York Times reports that Isaacman actually already told Trump directly about them late last year.

Perhaps Trump was sending a message to Elon Musk?

Wes Moore Meets with Ex-Obama and Biden Advisers

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) met with former Obama and Biden advisers in South Carolina, the Baltimore Sun reports.

An Astonishing Attack on Russia

June 2, 2025 at 6:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “More than 100 drones were smuggled deep into Russia by Ukrainian spies and hidden in the rooftops of specially constructed wooden cabins. These roofs then opened remotely at the moment of attack, with the drones swarming out and striking more than 40 bomber jets parked at Russian airfields across the country. One of the targets — the Belaya airfield in Siberia — is 3,500 miles from Ukraine… Yet Russia never saw it coming.”

“This is a game-changing moment in modern warfare, with repercussions for every serious military on the planet, including here in America. At relatively little expense — although with jaw-dropping audacity — a small-ish nation has delivered a major strategic setback to one of the most powerful militaries on earth, deep inside its own territory.”

Eight People Set on Fire in ‘Targeted Act of Violence’

June 2, 2025 at 6:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Eight people marching in support of Israeli hostages held in Gaza were burned Sunday by a man wielding what authorities called a “makeshift flamethrower” and an incendiary device, the Denver Post reports.

Playbook: “Citing multiple DHS sources, Fox News reports the suspect in Boulder is an Egyptian national who overstayed his visa but was given permission to remain under Joe Biden’s presidency. The report — yet to be confirmed elsewhere — was immediately seized upon by MAGA figures both inside and outside the Trump administration as further evidence that Biden dangerously lost control of immigration.”

Hating New York

June 2, 2025 at 6:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Krugman: “MAGA and MAGA-adjacent types are very good at finding things and people to hate. They hate immigrants (unless they’re white South Africans), LGBTQ people and wokeness. They hate universities and are doing their best to destroy American science. The New York Times reports that they hate Europe. And they very much hate New York City.”

“OK, I’m not impartial on this issue. I grew up on Long Island and still think of NYC proper as ‘the city.’ I live in Manhattan now, and my experience is that if you can afford housing — which is admittedly a huge problem — it’s actually a very good life, with an incredible range of things to do either in walking distance or a short subway ride away. Not everyone wants to live this way, but nobody is saying they should. All we ask is that some Americans be allowed to have favorable views of a place that provides the advantages density and, yes, diversity can offer.”

“But that, of course, is exactly what the U.S. right refuses to accept. New York is one of the safest places in America, yet much of the country insists on seeing it as a terrifying urban hellscape.”

Murphy Launches Ambitious Anti-Trump PAC

June 2, 2025 at 6:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) is launching a new PAC aimed at taking on President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress — the latest sign the Connecticut Democrat is eyeing higher office,” Politico reports.

‘Medicare Moderates’ Are the Senators to Watch

June 2, 2025 at 5:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The Senate’s deficit hawks might be raising the loudest hue and cry over the GOP’s ‘big, beautiful bill.’ But another group of Republicans is poised to have a bigger impact on the final legislative product.”

“Call them the ‘Medicaid moderates.’”

“They’re actually an ideologically diverse bunch — ranging from conservative Josh Hawley of Missouri to centrist Susan Collins of Maine. Yet they have found rare alignment over concerns about what the House-passed version of the GOP domestic-policy megabill does to the national safety-net health program, and they have the leverage to force significant changes in the Senate.”

GOP Senator Draws Red Line on Trump Megabill

June 2, 2025 at 5:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) is used to watching his fellow GOP senators look at their shoes during closed-door meetings when he waves his charts and digs in his heels on the fiscal policies that are the foundation of his political career,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“But when lawmakers return to work this week, he is determined to make them look up and pay attention.”

“The three-term Republican is insisting on deeper spending cuts in President Trump’s ‘big beautiful bill,’ saying his party is doing too little to address the country’s debt burden. His hard-line stance threatens to complicate passage of the GOP’s multitrillion dollar measure, which the Senate is turning to now and Trump wants on his desk by July 4.”

Party Activists Aren’t Sold on Harris for Governor

June 1, 2025 at 10:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Ever since Ms. Harris returned home to California in January after losing last year’s presidential race, Democrats have wondered whether she would run for governor in 2026. Her entry would shake up the race, and many observers believe she would be the front-runner. But she has made few public appearances and offered little indication of which way she is leaning.”

“Her absence from the hall in Anaheim this weekend loomed over the state party convention like the pair of large video screens that carried her message. And that left many party activists questioning just how seriously she was considering running.”

Washington Post: As Kamala Harris weighs a run for governor, some Democrats are moving on.
