Can Democrats Dodge Doomsday

February 20, 2022 at 12:37 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Maureen Dowd: “James Carville helped Bill Clinton get elected against stiff odds. David Axelrod helped Barack Obama get elected against stiff odds. And Stan Greenberg was the first to identify the fateful trend of Reagan Democrats.”

“All three Dems are speaking out with startling candor about the impending Repubocalypse. Many Americans are fed up. The jumbled Covid response has eroded an already shaky trust in government. Inflation is biting. War is looming. Things feel out of control. People are anxious and reassessing their lives. Democrats have to connect with that.”

Abbott Leads By 7-Points In Texas

February 20, 2022 at 12:36 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Dallas Morning News/UT-Taylor poll in Texas finds Gov. Greg Abbott (R) with a 7-point lead over Beto O’Rourke (D), 45% to 38% in the race for governor.

The Meaning of San Francisco’s School-Board Recall

February 20, 2022 at 12:34 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Atlantic: “Not surprisingly, interpretation of the results has depended on politics. Conservatives including Mike Pence, Bill Kristol, and the chair of the California Republican Party have claimed that the vote was another piece of evidence, on top of the Virginia gubernatorial race, that the Democratic Party is out of step not just with Republicans, but with its own constituents. Progressives rejected such conclusions, insisting that the recall was simply about competence and was driven by an only-in-San-Francisco set of circumstances.”

“The truth lies somewhere in between, but closer to the conservative view. At a minimum, the recall demonstrates that ‘woke’ racial politics have their limits, even in one of the wokest cities in the country.”

February 20, 2022 at 11:40 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump’s new social media venture, Truth Social, appears set to launch in Apple’s App Store on Monday, Reuters reports.

The launch would restore Trump’s presence on social media more than a year after he was banned from Twitter.

Is Today the Day Russia Attacks Ukraine?

February 20, 2022 at 11:17 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Analysts looking at Russia’s menacing buildup of troops on Ukraine’s borders have long circled Feb. 20 as a day to watch for potential action. Sunday marks the confluence of several events and milestones that some think could — amid the feverish guessing game surrounding the standoff — hold deeper meaning.”

Wall Street Journal: Russia extends drills in Belarus as violence escalates.

Russia Could Be Blocked from Dollars, Pounds

February 20, 2022 at 11:15 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The United Kingdom and the United States could take steps to prevent Russian companies from trading in British pounds and U.S. dollars if Russian President Vladimir Putin invades Ukraine, the BBC reports.

The Guardian reports that London-listed Russian firms are likely to be on the list of establishments targeted by possible sanctions.

Putin May Not Stop at Ukraine

February 20, 2022 at 11:13 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss told the Daily Mail that Russian President Vladimir Putin “will not stop at Ukraine,” warning that neighboring countries could be targeted if the international community fails to “stand up” to what she called “Russian aggression.”

Said Truss: “It could be Ukraine next week, but then which country will it be next?”

Biden and Putin Wage Mind Games Before War

February 20, 2022 at 11:10 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Biden and Vladimir Putin are each trying to shape the narrative of what is happening in Ukraine and get inside the heads of a global audience — and each other — to gain the upper hand in an information war as a possible prelude to a real one,” Axios reports.

“U.S. officials say Putin is stoking disinformation in order to blame Ukraine if Russia invades. The White House is trying to announce Putin’s plays before he runs them — a novel and risky strategy they hope might stave off an invasion, or at least help unify the international community against it.”

Quote of the Day

February 20, 2022 at 11:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Joe Biden came to Capitol Hill and personally lobbied Democratic senators to vote against Russian sanctions. That’s why we’re facing this invasion. I gotta say… Joe Biden becoming president is the best thing that ever happened, tragically, for Vladimir Putin.”

— Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), quoted by The Hill.

Biden Still Willing to Talk to Putin

February 20, 2022 at 11:02 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Sunday that President Biden was still willing to talk to President Vladimir Putin of Russia despite the U.S. government’s assessment that Mr. Putin has already decided to invade Ukraine,” the New York Times reports.

Said Blinken: “We believe President Putin has made the decision, but until the tanks are actually rolling, and the planes are flying, we will use every opportunity and every minute we have to see if diplomacy can still dissuade President Putin from carrying this forward.”

Covid Is More Like Smoking Than the Flu

February 20, 2022 at 10:52 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Atlantic: “The end state of this pandemic may indeed be one where COVID comes to look something like the flu. Both diseases, after all, are caused by a dangerous respiratory virus that ebbs and flows in seasonal cycles.”

“But I’d propose a different metaphor to help us think about our tenuous moment: The ‘new normal’ will arrive when we acknowledge that COVID’s risks have become more in line with those of smoking cigarettes—and that many COVID deaths, like many smoking-related deaths, could be prevented with a single intervention. The pandemic’s greatest source of danger has transformed from a pathogen into a behavior. Choosing not to get vaccinated against COVID is, right now, a modifiable health risk on par with smoking.”

Dan Patrick Is Trump’s Man In Texas

February 20, 2022 at 10:46 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Texas Tribune: “Patrick encouraged Perry, Texas’ governor from 2000 to 2015, to make a comeback and run again, even though fellow Republican Gov. Greg Abbott was already campaigning for election to a third term.”

“Perry ultimately opted against running. But the plotting against Abbott, which has not been previously reported, was perhaps the most brazen example of Patrick’s efforts this election cycle to handpick a roster of allies across all levels of state government and expand his already massive influence. Often, he has done so by weaponizing his close relationship with former President Donald Trump to help elect his friends and hurt his adversaries.”

FDA Eyes Second Covid-19 Booster Shot

February 20, 2022 at 10:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“U.S. health regulators are looking at potentially authorizing a fourth dose of a Covid-19 vaccine in the fall,“ the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The planning is still in early stages, and authorization would depend on ongoing studies establishing that a fourth dose would shore up people’s molecular defenses that waned after their first booster and reduce their risk of symptomatic and severe disease.”

Biden to Hold National Security Council Meeting

February 20, 2022 at 7:38 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Biden will be convening a National Security Council meeting on Ukraine on Sunday, The Hill reports.

It was confirmed she had been in direct contact with her eldest son and heir, the Prince of Wales, the week he had the disease.

Kamala Harris In Europe

February 20, 2022 at 6:57 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The White House says their roles are complementary, that Harris is in Munich to provide leadership and inspiration while Blinken handles the private talks and diplomatic minutiae. But some U.S. diplomats say it’s not that simple.”

Said one U.S. official: “The vice president and Secretary Blinken have talked to each other here, but they’re pursuing separate schedules and their teams are not closely coordinated. You could argue it’s a divide-and-conquer strategy, but that’s far-fetched. The Harris stop is about burnishing her political credentials as a leader in the middle of a crisis.”

GOP Lawmaker Wants Asylum for Truck Protesters

February 19, 2022 at 8:39 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Yvette Herrell (R-NM) compared Canada’s handling of vaccine mandate protesters to “an authoritarian regime like Venezuela” and said she will introduce legislation to temporarily grant asylum to Canadians protesting vaccine requirements, Mediaite reports.

Trump In Talks to Host Saudi Golf Tournaments

February 19, 2022 at 4:51 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former president Donald Trump’s company is angling to host events at his golf courses for the controversial Saudi golf league, according to three people familiar with the matter, potentially handing Trump a lucrative business partnership with an oppressive regime he defended as president,” the Washington Post reports.

“The financial terms of the proposed deal are unclear, but the events would undoubtedly provide revenue for Trump through the Saudis, who are making a fierce bid to recruit PGA Tour players and launch a series of golf tournaments.”
