Why Does JD Vance Keep Saying Loony Things?

July 7, 2026 at 10:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Margaret Sullivan: “Given how impetuous Donald Trump is, his vice-president, JD Vance, strikes some Americans as a more stable alternative. A good bet, some of the Maga faithful believe, as the 2028 Republican nominee for president, and the eventual occupant of the Oval Office.”

“Every bit as rightwing as Trump but more serious and predictable – that seems to be Vance’s pitch to the public. And he clearly wants to be president; he’s as ambitious as they come.”

“Why, then, does he keep saying such loony things?”

Rahm Emanuel to Warn Israelis They Face a ‘Dead End’

July 7, 2026 at 9:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Rahm Emanuel, the former Chicago mayor and potential Democratic presidential candidate, plans to use a speech in Tel Aviv on Wednesday to warn that America’s relationship with Israel is ‘not sustainable’ unless the Israeli government sharply changes course,” the Washington Post reports.

Michael Cohen Says He Reconciled with Trump

July 7, 2026 at 9:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen on Monday said he and the president have reconciled after he turned on his former boss,” NewsNation reports.

Said Cohen: “Out of nowhere, when I was sitting with my wife at a restaurant, my phone buzzed and it was a text from that friend who expressed to me the president’s genuine empathy for the hell that I was being dragged through… I deeply appreciated that text. I actually texted the president. I thanked him. Expressed my sincere hope that this long, exhausting feud between the two of us could finally end.”

He added: “We both knew the cost of this war. In that moment the ice between us, it didn’t just melt, it broke.”

Trump Arrives in Turkey for NATO Summit

July 7, 2026 at 9:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump arrived in Turkey on Tuesday for a summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, as the alliance is squeezed by Russia’s continuing military aggression in Ukraine and America’s growing insistence that NATO members quickly beef up their defense spending,” CNBC reports.

“Those pressing concerns come on top of lingering controversies surrounding the U.S.′ war against Iran and its prior attempts to take over Greenland, a territory of NATO member Denmark.”

“Trump is a central figure in all of those issues.”

Fox News: Trump arrives at NATO summit as Iran rift looms above alliance talks.

Nigel Farage to Address Political Future After Scrutiny

July 7, 2026 at 9:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Nigel Farage said he would make a statement ‘on my future in public life’ later on Tuesday following a series of damaging articles about undeclared donations that raised questions about his probity,” Bloomberg reports.

Haley Stevens and Abdul El-Sayed Face Off in Debate

July 7, 2026 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Michigan’s remaining Democratic Senate candidates — Rep. Haley Stevens and former Michigan health official Abdul El-Sayed — are set to go head to head in a televised debate Tuesday, two days after state Sen. Mallory McMorrow suspended her campaign,” CBS News reports.

“McMorrow’s departure shook up an already-heated primary that has been marred by intraparty fighting.”

French Appeals Court Allows Le Pen to Run Next Year

July 7, 2026 at 8:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“An appeals court ruled that Marine Le Pen is eligible to run in next year’s presidential election, despite being found guilty of misusing European Parliament funds, reviving the far-right leader’s political fortunes,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“A panel of three judges reduced a lower court sentence from March 2025 that barred Le Pen from seeking office for five years, narrowing the effective ban to 15 months.”

“The appeals court also reduced Le Pen’s four-year prison sentence to three years. Two years of that term were suspended, judges said. They said Le Pen could serve the remaining year by using an electronic bracelet.”

Bloomberg: Le Pen free to run in French presidential race after appeal.

July 7, 2026 at 8:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The United States trade deficit in goods and services widened to $77.6 billion in May as America imported more goods than it sold abroad. U.S. exports of goods and services fell 3.2 percent in the month, to $317.7 billion,” the New York Times reports.

Netanyahu Vows Israel Will Keep Occupying Neighbors

July 7, 2026 at 8:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said last week that among the most important lessons from the 2023 Hamas attack was ‘having buffer zones inside enemy territory — not inside our territory.’,” Bloomberg reports.

“It was the latest sign of a profound shift in the nation’s security doctrine triggered by the Oct. 7, 2023 attack that killed and abducted hundreds, which now sees the Israeli military stationing troops beyond its borders in Gaza, Syria and Lebanon. Those foreign operations have left thousands dead and displaced more than a million in Lebanon alone, as Israel bulldozes villages near its border, sparking condemnation from its occupied neighbors and allies abroad.”

Graham Platner Has No Real Leverage

July 7, 2026 at 7:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Pfeiffer: “I fully expect Platner to drop out. Continuing is not an option. Were he not to do so, it would be a zombie campaign marching on to certain defeat with no support and no resources.”

“Platner is reportedly trying to use the threat of staying in the race to ensure that an ideologically similar candidate gets nominated. I’m sorry, but Platner has no real leverage. He forfeited that long ago. If he really cares about the issues he ran on and really believes in the urgency of beating Susan Collins, he should just step aside right now.”

Washington Post: Graham Platner has six days to decide whether to drop out. Here’s how that would work.

Why China Fired a Long-Range Missile Into the Pacific

July 7, 2026 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“With one missile fired over the Pacific Ocean from a submarine lurking off China’s coast, the country’s leader, Xi Jinping, has proclaimed his determination to build a full suite of nuclear weapons, including sea-based missiles that have long been Beijing’s weak spot,” the New York Times reports.

“The missile test on Monday came after China’s military has been battered for years by mass removals of commanders accused of corruption and disloyalty. But Chinese media declared that the test showed the country remained on track to create a full nuclear triad; that is, a range of land-, air- and sea-based weapons that could give Beijing a stronger hand in a regional crisis or war with the United States.”

Tanker Catches Fire After Projectile Strike in Strait

July 7, 2026 at 7:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A liquefied natural gas tanker caught fire Tuesday after being struck by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman, according to the British military,” NewsNation reports.

“The attack is the largest involving ships transitioning the strategic waterway, a key global energy route. Iranian state television said the vessel was targeted after ignoring warning signs but did not directly claim responsibility.”

Half of Americans Struggle to Afford Groceries and Gas

July 7, 2026 at 7:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Guardian: “Despite stable employment and record-high stock markets, more Americans believe the overall economy is getting worse (57%) than in February (46%), when the poll was last conducted and before the war in the Middle East sent gas prices soaring. Fewer people today also believe the economy is getting better (16%, compared with 28% in February) and more say their financial security has gotten worse.”

“The affordability struggle crosses party lines: about half of all Democrats, Republicans and independents say they are having trouble affording everyday necessities like gas and groceries. Two-thirds of Americans – including 49% of Republicans – said they have little faith that the federal government will improve the cost-of-living crisis they face.”

How Redistricting Squeezed House Democrats’ Fundraising

July 7, 2026 at 7:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Redistricting already reshaped the House map for the 2026 midterms. But for House Democrats, it means fewer incumbents are paying dues to the party’s campaign arm, and some are worried it could cause a cash crunch,” NOTUS reports.

‘Central Casting’ Fails Democrats in Maine

July 7, 2026 at 7:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonthan Chait: “There is no longer much question as to whether Platner is suitable for public office, and even less question as to whether plucking him from political obscurity made any sense. A more pertinent question is: What could possibly drive a professional political strategist to support such a rapid promotion in mere minutes?”

“One plausible reason appears to be political ideology. Katz and his allies have sought out candidates who are willing to castigate the Democratic Party for selling out the working class—which necessitates, or at least militates toward, candidates who have no experience inside the party. And whereas this ideological orientation requires an intensity of commitment, it does not require a mastery of policy detail…”

“But a second, at least as important reason for Platner’s lightning-fast ratification was that he has the desired look for the part. Donald Trump has described liking his appointees to come right out of ‘central casting,’ by which he means that they look like a Hollywood version of the position they are filling.”

Democrats Probe Trump Family IRS Settlement

July 7, 2026 at 7:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Top Senate Democrats are pushing for answers on whether a provision in a controversial settlement agreement between President Trump and his own administration applies to companies co-founded by or affiliated with the Trump family,” CBS News reports.

“As part of a deal struck in May by the Justice Department to resolve a lawsuit brought by Mr. Trump, the Internal Revenue Service is permanently barred from pursuing claims against Mr. Trump, his oldest sons Don Jr. and Eric, and the Trump Organization based on prior tax returns.”
