Trump Loyalists Push to Revisit Election Results

May 19, 2021 at 11:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The ramifications of Trump’s ceaseless attacks on the 2020 election are increasingly visible throughout the country: In emails, phone calls and public meetings, his supporters are questioning how their elections are administered and pressing public officials to revisit the vote count — wrongly insisting that Trump won the presidential race.”

“Behind the scenes, a loose network of lawyers, self-styled election experts and political groups is bolstering community efforts by demanding audits, filing lawsuits and pushing unsubstantiated claims that residents are echoing in public meetings. Much of it is playing out in largely Republican communities, where Trump supporters hope to find officials willing to support their inquiries.”

May 19, 2021 at 9:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Florida legislators approved a legislative package Wednesday that will dramatically expand gambling in the state and sets the stage for former president Donald Trump to pursue a casino license at his Doral golf resort,” the Washington Post reports.

Trump’s CFO Is Subject of Criminal Probe

May 19, 2021 at 7:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The New York attorney general’s office has opened a criminal tax investigation into top Trump Organization officer Allen Weisselberg, increasing the legal pressure on the long-time aide to former President Donald Trump,” CNN reports.

“The pressure on Weisselberg is mounting from two directions with the attorney general looking into his personal taxes, while prosecutors in the district attorney’s office are digging into his role at the Trump Organization, his personal finances, and benefits given to his son Barry, a long-time employee of the Trump Organization.”

House Passes Bill to Investigate Capitol Riots

May 19, 2021 at 6:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The U.S. House, in a 252 to 175 vote, passed a bill to establish bipartisan commission to investigate Jan. 6 attack on Capitol.

Every Democrat voted for the bill along with 35 Republicans who defied their party’s leadership.

Axios: “The amount of Republican support makes it far more difficult for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to try and dismiss the commission outright as a partisan effort.”

Collins Blames Pelosi for Jan. 6 Commission Problems

May 19, 2021 at 5:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) “blamed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for creating this impasse because she did not consult in advance with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell,” CNN reports.

Said Collins: “If I had been the Speaker, I would have reached out to him and talked to him about how it should have been drafted. I would have reached out to Kevin McCarthy. She did neither. So I think the fact that we’re in this situation now is due to the lack of outreach.”

Georgia Republicans Won’t Condemn Atlanta Spa Shooting

May 19, 2021 at 5:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“All eight Republicans who represent Georgia in the U.S. House voted against a resolution condemning the Atlanta spa shootings,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

OAN Reporters Raise Money for Bogus Election ‘Audit’

May 19, 2021 at 5:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Two reporters at One America News, a far-right TV station, are running a dark money organization that they say is helping fund a counter-reality ‘audit’ that former President Donald Trump and his supporters believe will overturn Arizona’s 2020 election results in his favor,” BuzzFeed News reports.

“What’s more, one of those reporters, Christina Bobb, is the network’s most visible correspondent covering that audit.”

House Democrats Will Meet In-Person Again

May 19, 2021 at 5:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Democrats will hold an “in-person hybrid meeting” on June 15, Roll Call reports.

“It will be a big change after roughly 90 straight virtual confabs — Tuesday meetings, conference calls, and even a caucus election — since the start of the pandemic.”

Ralston Is Writing a Harry Reid Biography

May 19, 2021 at 4:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jon Ralston announced that he’s writing a biography of former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV).

“He is arguably the most powerful man in Nevada history and an important national figure. You think you know everything about Reid, but you don’t. He has done interviews, will do more.”

House Republicans Hold Tax Cut ‘Boot Camp’

May 19, 2021 at 3:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

With President Joe Biden pushing congressional Democrats to increase taxes and chip away at former President Donald Trump’s tax law, Republicans are preparing for battle with a “boot camp,” reports the Washington Examiner.

“Rather than pushups and pullups, the members walked through percentages, averages, and milestones supporting their defense of the cuts.”

It’s worth noting that the passage of the Trump tax cuts — not Charlottesville, not the many scandals — was actually the low point of his approval rating.

Bipartisan Deal Reached to Overhaul Postal Service

May 19, 2021 at 3:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “A bipartisan group of senators is expected to introduce legislation Wednesday to lift significant financial burdens off the ailing U.S. Postal Service while tightening accountability requirements for mail delivery, a major stride toward reform for the agency that has tussled with its balance sheet and reputation for the better part of a year.”

Pence’s Brother Will Vote Against Jan. 6 Commission

May 19, 2021 at 3:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Greg Pence (R-IN), the brother of former vice president Mike Pence, said that he will vote against the formation of an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, the Washington Post reports.

At one point during the Jan. 6 attack, a group of rioters began chanting, “Hang Mike Pence!” as they streamed through the main door on the east side of the Capitol.

All of which makes Pence’s statement even stranger: “Hanging Judge Nancy Pelosi is hellbent on pushing her version of partisan justice complete with a hand-picked jury that will carry out her pre-determined political execution of Donald Trump before law enforcement officials have completed their investigation.”

Republicans Fear Jan. 6 Probe Undercuts Midterm Message

May 19, 2021 at 3:06 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Republican senators publicly and privately tell CNN that the proposed Jan. 6 commission could undercut their party’s midterm election message.

Said Sen. John Thune (R-SD): “I want our midterm message to be on the kinds of things that the American people are dealing… not re-litigating the 2020 elections.”

It’s not often that a politician says out loud that he cares more about his next election than our democracy.

Pennsylvania Voters Limit Governor’s Emergency Power

May 19, 2021 at 3:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “Pennsylvania voters became the first in the nation to impose restrictions on a governor’s authority under an emergency disaster declaration, approving constitutional amendments sped to a statewide referendum by Republican lawmakers angry over how Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf handled the pandemic response.”

“The two questions led with almost 54% of the vote, with 73% of precincts reporting. More than 2 million ballots were cast, still less than a quarter of the state’s 8.7 million registered voters.”

What Barack Obama Thinks of Donald Trump

May 19, 2021 at 2:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

According to a new book, in conversations with advisers and donors during the Trump administration and the 2020 election, former President Barack Obama called Donald Trump a “madman,” a “racist, sexist pig,” “that fucking lunatic” and a “corrupt motherfucker,” The Guardian reports.

“Obama’s feelings are well-known, but have rarely been reported in such blunt detail.”

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) says there’s a greater than 50-50 chance of striking a deal on infrastructure with President Biden, Bloomberg reports.

“She doubted, however, that a bill can make it through the House and Senate by a July 4 deadline proposed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.”

May 19, 2021 at 2:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Norm Ornstein and Ruth Ben-Ghiat were interviewed by Mehdi Hasan on MSNBC:

HASAN: Do you believe a Republican-controlled Congress will allow a Democratic nominee for president who wins in 2024 to take office? Yes or no?

BEN-GHIAT: No.

ORNSTEIN: No.

Trump Calls Criminal Probe Against Him ‘Corrupt’

May 19, 2021 at 1:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former President Trump “tore into New York prosecutors, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, after her office said that it is pursuing a criminal investigation into the Trump Organization,” NBC News reports.

Trump attacked James in a lengthy statement: “There is nothing more corrupt than an investigation that is in desperate search of a crime.”

He added: “But, make no mistake, that is exactly what is happening here. The Attorney General of New York literally campaigned on prosecuting Donald Trump even before she knew anything about me.”
